The Way Ahead the future of creative writing in education with special guests: Michael Morpurgo and Kate Atkinson a NAWE conference at The Hawkhills, York 16-18 November 2007 The Way Ahead: Introduction by Paul Munden This conference celebrates NAWE’s 20th year, and there are indeed real reasons to celebrate, over and above the date. When NAWE was first formed (by members represented on this latest conference programme) it had the aim of ‘widening the scope of writing in education, promoting the development of new ideas, offering practical help to less experienced writers and opening up a creative dialogue between writers, teachers and funding bodies.’ All those things have underwritten our every effort ever since, and with fruitful results. Current initiatives, such as our HE Network and our Writers in Schools Research Programme, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, are applying those founding principles in fresh, determined ways. Education is always the subject of fierce debate. Try to imagine a time when we are all perfectly satisfied with the curriculum and how it is delivered! (It’s actually a rather sinister thought.) As the curriculum is once again undergoing major changes, it is especially appropriate that we are meeting to consider the way ahead for writers and their engagement with education at all levels. As the word ‘creativity’ has been liberally applied to new programmes of study, it is up to writers and other artists to help ensure that teachers are well supported in translating the new notions into meaningful practice. Sometimes this means working directly with official bodies. -

Hull History Centre: Howard Sergeant, inc 'Outposts' poetry magazine U DSG Papers of Howard Sergeant, including [1930]-1995 the Archives of 'Outposts' poetry magazine Biographical Background: Herbert ('Howard') Sergeant was born in Hull in 1914 and qualified as an accountant. He served in the RAF and the Air Ministry during the Second World War and with the assistance of his friend Lionel Monteith, edited and published the first issue of his poetry magazine 'Outposts' in February 1944. Outposts is the longest running independent poetry magazine in Britain. Sergeant had been writing poetry since childhood and his first poem to be published was 'Thistledown magic', in 'Chambers Journal' in 1943. 'Outposts' was conceived in wartime and its early focus was on poets 'who, by reason of the particular outposts they occupy, are able to visualise the dangers which confront the individual and the whole of humanity, now and after the war' (editorial, 'Outposts', no.1). Over the decades, the magazine specialised in publishing unrecognised poets alongside the well established. Sergeant deliberately avoided favouring any particular school of poetry, and edited 'Mavericks: an anthology', with Dannie Abse, in 1957, in support of this stance. Sergeant's own poetry was included in the first issue of 'Outposts' (but rarely thereafter) and his first published collection, 'The Leavening Air', appeared in 1946. He was involved in setting up the Dulwich Group (a branch of the British Poetry Association) in 1949, and again, when it re-formed in 1960. In 1956, Sergeant published the first of the Outposts Modern Poets Series of booklets and hardbacks devoted to individual poets. -

My work is centred in this field of study and it aims at conducting a comparative analysis of the narratives produced by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe and Angolan author Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, observing the convergent and divergent aspects in aesthetics and ideology present in their works. -

Postcolonial Text, Vol 8, No 1 (2013) Interviews with Contemporary Ugandan Writers Graham Mort Lancaster University I have worked with writers in Uganda since 2001 when I designed and ran a series of British Council-funded development projects for writers, which ended in 2009. Those projects are now archived and can be viewed at the Centre for Transcultural Writing and Research at Lancaster University (www.transculturalwriting.com). Since that time, I have focused my work through the Kampala-based FEMRITE Women Writers Association, whose members were so helpful during my original visit. In April 2012, I returned to Kampala to run an editorial training course for writers there. I also carried out interviews with writers, teachers, editors, publishers, and personnel at the National Curriculum Development (NCDC) office at Kymabogo University. I was curious about and frustrated by the problems that still faced Ugandan writers, especially the lack of Ugandan texts on the secondary school curriculum and the obvious issues that were expressed in the emergent writers’ use of English––often (not always) formally correct and sometimes with a beguiling Ugandan inflection, but rarely with the kind of relaxed diction that showed ownership, confidence, and adaptation. Reluctant to quantify or interpret interview data in a way that might distort opinion or covertly express my own views, I used those interviews to focus a series of questions that I felt were central to current issues. Here I engage with two writers who are well-respected in Uganda and who I have known since 2001. Julius Ocwinyo is a novelist and editor at Uganda’s leading academic and literary publisher, Fountain Press; Susan Kiguli is an academic at Makerere University and a leading Ugandan poet. -

The Influence of New Media Technologies on African Literature By Anietie Isong A Thesis Submitted in Partial Requirements of Awarding the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at De Montfort University April 2018 Abstract This study investigates the role of new media technologies in the development of African literature. It examines the different ways that these new technologies such as the Internet and mobile phones have revolutionised the way Africans write and read literary works on the continent. African literature refers to literary works written mostly by Africans in any language. Over the last decade, new African writers have created a stir in the arenas of creative writing. Uses and gratification as well as diffusion of innovation theories were adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. A total of 30 African writers and 300 readers completed a survey questionnaire designed to elicit responses on how new media has influenced African literature. Some of the writers interviewed have distinguished themselves in their fields, their works have appeared alongside works of other international writers. The readers were chosen from a popular literary society. The results of the study indicate that the Internet has a big impact on reception of African literature, creating endless opportunities, easy accessibility, promotion of work and networking with peers and literary community. The findings also show that social media also increases networking opportunities and provides a platform where readers access, share and discuss African literature. Mobile phones also play a significant and functional role in the reception and promotion of African literature. Overall, these findings suggest that new media technologies have created opportunities for African literature to be appreciated globally, and have enabled readers to access, share and discuss new works.
