Expert's Views on the Dilemmas of African Writers
EXPERTS’ VIEWS ON THE DILEMMAS OF AFRICAN WRITERS: CONTRIBUTIONS, CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS By Sarah Kaddu Abstract African writers have faced the “dilemma syndrome” in the execution of their mission. They have faced not only “bed of roses” but also “the bed of thorns”. On one hand, African writers such as Chinua Achebe have made a fortune from royalties from his African Writers’ Series (AWS) and others such as Wole Soyinka, Ben Okri and Naruddin Farah have depended on prestigious book prizes. On the other hand, some African writers have also, according to Larson (2001), faced various challenges: running bankrupt, political and social persecution, business sabotage, loss of life or escaping catastrophe by “hair breadth”. Nevertheless, the African writers have persisted with either success or agony. Against this backdrop, this paper examines the experts’ views on the contributions of African writers to the extending of national and international frontiers in publishing as well as the attendant handicaps before proposing strategies for overcoming the challenges encountered. The specific objectives are to establish some of the works published by the African writers; determine the contribution of the works published by African writers to in terms of political, economic, and cultural illumination; examine the challenges encountered in the publishing process of the African writers’ works; and, predict trends in the future of the African writers’ series. The study findings illuminate on the contributions to political, social, gender, cultural re-awakening and documentation, poetry and literature, growth of the book trade and publishing industry/employment in addition to major challenges encountered. The study entailed extensive analysis of literature, interviews with experts on African writings from the Uganda Christian University and Makerere University, and African Writers Trust; focus group discussions with publishers, and a few selected African writers, and a review of the selected pioneering publications of African writers. -

The Way Ahead the future of creative writing in education with special guests: Michael Morpurgo and Kate Atkinson a NAWE conference at The Hawkhills, York 16-18 November 2007 The Way Ahead: Introduction by Paul Munden This conference celebrates NAWE’s 20th year, and there are indeed real reasons to celebrate, over and above the date. When NAWE was first formed (by members represented on this latest conference programme) it had the aim of ‘widening the scope of writing in education, promoting the development of new ideas, offering practical help to less experienced writers and opening up a creative dialogue between writers, teachers and funding bodies.’ All those things have underwritten our every effort ever since, and with fruitful results. Current initiatives, such as our HE Network and our Writers in Schools Research Programme, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, are applying those founding principles in fresh, determined ways. Education is always the subject of fierce debate. Try to imagine a time when we are all perfectly satisfied with the curriculum and how it is delivered! (It’s actually a rather sinister thought.) As the curriculum is once again undergoing major changes, it is especially appropriate that we are meeting to consider the way ahead for writers and their engagement with education at all levels. As the word ‘creativity’ has been liberally applied to new programmes of study, it is up to writers and other artists to help ensure that teachers are well supported in translating the new notions into meaningful practice. Sometimes this means working directly with official bodies. -

This presentation is usually noticed in their simplicity of language, thematic preoccupation and authorial vision. The poems of Niyi Osundare and Mildred Kiconco Barya from West and East Africa were selected for analysis in this study. The analysis and close reading of the selected poems reveal that Niyi Osundare and Mildred Kiconco Barya were able to present their struggle for a just society through their simplicity of language, presentation of prevalent themes relevant to their various societies and a genuine authorial vision/social commitment in their various poems. The article takes note of the polysemous yet connected roles and their significance in defining Rubadiri as one of the leading literary voices in the East African region. University of Massachusetts Boston From the SelectedWorks of Chukwuma Azuonye 2011 ‘The ysM tic Drum’: Critical Commentary on Gabriel Okara’s Love Lyrics Chukwuma Azuonye, University of Massachusetts Boston Available at: https://works.bepress.com/chukwuma_azuonye/82/ ‘The Mystic Drum’: Critical Commentary on Gabriel Okara’s Love Lyrics: By Chukwuma Azuonye, PhD Professor of African & African Diaspora Literatures University of Massachusetts Boston Introduction In the course of reading a chapter entitled “Empty and Marvelous” in Alan Watts fascinating book, The Way of Zen (1957), a serendipitous key was provided, by the following statement from the teachings of Chinese Zen master,1 Ch’ing Yuän Wei-hsin (1067-1120), to the structure and meaning of the experience dramatized in Gabriel Okara’s most famous love poem, “The Mystic Drum”: 2 Before I had studied Zen for thirty years, I saw mountains as mountains and waters as waters. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw the mountains are not mountains, and waters are not waters. But now that I have got its very substance I am at rest. For it’s just now that I see mountains once again as mountains and waters once again as waters. What is so readily striking to anyone who has read “The Mystic Drum” is the near perfect dynamic equivalence between the words of Ch’ing Yuän and the phraseology of Okara’s lyric. In line with Ch’ing Yuän’s statement, the lyric falls into three clearly defined parts—an initial phase of “conventional knowledge,” when men are men and fishes are fishes (lines 1-15); a median phase of “more intimate knowledge,” when men are no longer men and fishes are no longer fishes (lines 16-26); and a final phase of “substantial knowledge,” when men are once again men and fishes are once again fishes, with the difference that at this phase, the beloved lady of the lyric is depicted as “standing behind a tree” with “her lips parted in her smile,” now “turned cavity belching darkness” (lines 27-41). -

Impact case study (REF3b) Institution: Lancaster University Unit of Assessment: 29 English Language and Literature Title of case study: Transformations in African Writing: Stimulating Creativity and Enabling Transcultural Exchange 1. Summary of the impact Creative Writing research projects funded by the British Council have created a transformative educational environment for African writers, developing life-changing training programmes. Designed and delivered by the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, and led by Dr (now Professor) Graham Mort, these projects pioneered eMentoring and new online teaching pedagogies, engaging directly with over 300 African writers across 9 African countries, whilst creating outreach activity through a literary festival that engaged writers from 18 African countries and the UK. Three phases of cumulative practice-led research have helped to nurture a new generation of African writers with each project leading into the next: 1. Crossing Borders (2001-06) – connecting writers across 9 African nations, involving 300 writers linked to 36 UK mentors; 2. Radiophonics (2007-09) – creating exploratory forms of public debate and fiction through radio in Africa and reaching over 5 million listeners; 3. FEMRITE (2011-) developing and stimulating female writing in Uganda through training programmes. 2. Underpinning research The underpinning research for these projects began in Uganda in 2001. Mort’s six-week British Council writing residency at Makerere University (Kampala) in 2001 involved direct contact with Ugandan writers and led to his report identifying a sense of isolation amongst writers, a lack of training opportunities, limited awareness of contemporary literatures in English and few literary resources or opportunities for publication. -

Paddy Davies obtained a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) on the use of propaganda in civil war focusing on the Biafran experience. The Claimant collated and interpreted material and compiled the sequence of events in SADE exerting a substantial amount of skill, labour and judgement. 3)Between 1994-1995, the Claimant sent a copy of her manuscript to the 2"d Defendant along with other publishing houses. Although Heinemann UK accepted Sade for 1 ~... publication under the African Writers' Series they failed to publish. Chinua Achebe was one of the founding editors of the African Writers' Series which had been established to promote black African literature. The novel was also accepted for publication by Longman UK who also failed to publish following to a policy decision not to publish Nigerian literature due to a lack of market. -
