The Influence of New Media Technologies on African Literature The Influence of New Media Technologies on African Literature By Anietie Isong A Thesis Submitted in Partial Requirements of Awarding the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at De Montfort University April 2018 Abstract This study investigates the role of new media technologies in the development of African literature. It examines the different ways that these new technologies such as the Internet and mobile phones have revolutionised the way Africans write and read literary works on the continent. African literature refers to literary works written mostly by Africans in any language. Over the last decade, new African writers have created a stir in the arenas of creative writing. Uses and gratification as well as diffusion of innovation theories were adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. A total of 30 African writers and 300 readers completed a survey questionnaire designed to elicit responses on how new media has influenced African literature. Some of the writers interviewed have distinguished themselves in their fields, their works have appeared alongside works of other international writers. The readers were chosen from a popular literary society. The results of the study indicate that the Internet has a big impact on reception of African literature, creating endless opportunities, easy accessibility, promotion of work and networking with peers and literary community. The findings also show that social media also increases networking opportunities and provides a platform where readers access, share and discuss African literature. Mobile phones also play a significant and functional role in the reception and promotion of African literature. Overall, these findings suggest that new media technologies have created opportunities for African literature to be appreciated globally, and have enabled readers to access, share and discuss new works. ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my supervisor Dr Kutoma Wakunuma for her guidance in completing this research.     The Way Ahead the future of creative writing in education with special guests: Michael Morpurgo and Kate Atkinson a NAWE conference at The Hawkhills, York 16-18 November 2007 The Way Ahead: Introduction by Paul Munden This conference celebrates NAWE’s 20th year, and there are indeed real reasons to celebrate, over and above the date. When NAWE was first formed (by members represented on this latest conference programme) it had the aim of ‘widening the scope of writing in education, promoting the development of new ideas, offering practical help to less experienced writers and opening up a creative dialogue between writers, teachers and funding bodies.’ All those things have underwritten our every effort ever since, and with fruitful results. Current initiatives, such as our HE Network and our Writers in Schools Research Programme, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, are applying those founding principles in fresh, determined ways. Education is always the subject of fierce debate. Try to imagine a time when we are all perfectly satisfied with the curriculum and how it is delivered! (It’s actually a rather sinister thought.) As the curriculum is once again undergoing major changes, it is especially appropriate that we are meeting to consider the way ahead for writers and their engagement with education at all levels. As the word ‘creativity’ has been liberally applied to new programmes of study, it is up to writers and other artists to help ensure that teachers are well supported in translating the new notions into meaningful practice. Sometimes this means working directly with official bodies.

Summary of the impact Creative Writing research projects funded by the British Council have created a transformative educational environment for African writers, developing life-changing training programmes. Designed and delivered by the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, and led by Dr (now Professor) Graham Mort, these projects pioneered eMentoring and new online teaching pedagogies, engaging directly with over 300 African writers across 9 African countries, whilst creating outreach activity through a literary festival that engaged writers from 18 African countries and the UK. Three phases of cumulative practice-led research have helped to nurture a new generation of African writers with each project leading into the next: 1. Crossing Borders (2001-06) – connecting writers across 9 African nations, involving 300 writers linked to 36 UK mentors; 2. Radiophonics (2007-09) – creating exploratory forms of public debate and fiction through radio in Africa and reaching over 5 million listeners; 3. FEMRITE (2011-) developing and stimulating female writing in Uganda through training programmes. 2. Underpinning research The underpinning research for these projects began in Uganda in 2001. Mort’s six-week British Council writing residency at Makerere University (Kampala) in 2001 involved direct contact with Ugandan writers and led to his report identifying a sense of isolation amongst writers, a lack of training opportunities, limited awareness of contemporary literatures in English and few literary resources or opportunities for publication.

(Pound 1951:56) Even within an advanced print culture, poetry arguably never escapes the oral dimension. For Ezra Pound, whose highly intertextual epic The Cantos, so conscious of its page appearance, could only be the product of such a print culture, poetry was nevertheless “an art of pure sound,” the future of which in English was to be the “orchestration” of different European systems of sound-patterning (Pound 1973:33). Verbal orchestration is meaningless without auditors; it goes without saying that the notion of oral literature simultaneously implies the concept of aural literature. This much is also evident from the very beginning of Beowulf: Hwæt, we Gar-Dena in geardagum, / þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon . (“Listen, we have heard of the Spear-Danes in times past, of the glory of the people’s kings . ,” lines 1-2). While the conventionality of the opening might suggest the evocation of a formulaic idiom often associated with oral composition,2 the emphasis is clearly on aurality, on hearing a voice. Much work has been done in recent decades on the evidence in Old English written texts for a poetics that draws on compositional methods derived from an oral culture, either as it had survived into a period of widespread literacy, or as it was imagined to have once existed.3 This essay will not directly address that valuable rehabilitation of oral-formulaic theory into a more sophisticated understanding of early medieval scribal culture, although it will draw on it at times.
