Revd Mark writes….

Contentment

Why this Psalm? Of all the brilliant pieces of scripture, what makes us, Christian or not, gravitate towards this one?

Why this Psalm? Why Psalm 23?

Maybe this psalm reels us in because of the picture of contentment it paints. The whole Psalm is about how The Lord provides for everything. The Lord makes sure that His sheep want for nothing, and the cup runs over. When you get down to it, the sheep in the Psalm don’t want for much, do they? Grass. Water. The right path. A meal. Goodness. Mercy. The cup runs over, but the cup doesn’t run over with making money, greed, fancy motors, status and objects of luxury. The cup runs over with everyday basics. The simple life. Psalm 23 is the very picture of contentment with Dungiven Sunday School Christmas Nativity. Super! life at its simplest. I suspect we all seek contentment. How many magazines, books, TV channels are inspired by the drive for simplicity? How many holiday and car adverts focus on the contentment that is promised? We crave the contented, simple life, but yet, so often it’s the thing that we work hardest against. We fill our lives with the strangest and busiest of things. How many people do we run into through the week who finish a brief conversation with, “Well, I ‘ll have to run on here and……”? How many times do you finish brief conversations with that? We fit in just one more thing. One more project. One more activity. Having a smartphone or even a mobile probably doesn’t help matters! My cup runs over….but, if we don’t keep tabs on life, we’ll find that our cups run over with the wrong things, when all we really want is contentment. We talk about our homes and sheds and attics being filled with junk, that we just need time to sort through. We talk about needing more hours in the day and more days in the week. When all we want is to stretch out by the still waters, with nothing but goodness and mercy All the days of my life. When we have that kind of contentment, even the shadow of death doesn’t rattle our cage. Even the presence of our enemies can’t wipe away our appetite. The kind of contentment that Psalm 23 offers though, can’t be won through reading a book or going on some course. It’s the kind of contentment we know from following our Shepherd. It would seem that shepherds in the middle east don’t drive their herds, they lead them. They don’t smack them in the hind quarters, they walk ahead of them, and the sheep know that the Shepherd is going to take them somewhere good. It’s trust. It’s worry-free. It’s the kind of contentment which makes us want to not just recite this Psalm, but drink it or gulp it down, so that we can rest in those waters, in the house of the Lord, and in the trust of our Shepherd, for ever. At least that’s how I see Psalm 23! A wee bit of homework – read Philippians 4 v 12 too!

Every blessing Revd Mark
