ABSTRACT A long season of excavation took place at Raqefet cave during the summer of 2006. In the first chamber we exposed an area rich with Natufian human burials (Locus 1), a large bedrock basin with a burial and two boulder mortars (Locus 2), an in situ Natufian layer (Locus 3), and two areas with rich cemented sediments (tufa) covering the cave floor (Loci 4, 5). The latter indicate that at the time of occupation the Natufian layers covered the entire floor of the first chamber.

Gilliane Monnier,* Gilbert Tostevin,⁑ Goran Pajović,** Nikola Borovinić,*** Mile Baković*** Nova istraživanja paleolitskog nalazišta Crvena Stijena, istorijski kontekst Abstract: The rockshelter of Crvena Stijena (Nikšić municipality, Montenegro) is one of the most important Paleolithic sites in southeastern Europe. Its 20-meter deep sequence of archaeological deposits spans the Middle Paleolithic through the Bronze Age. The Middle Paleolithic deposits themselves, which cover an astonishing 12 meters in depth, contain one of the longest records of Neanderthal occupation in the region. Since its discovery in 1954, the site has been the subject of two major research projects; the data they have produced have helped make it a critical type-site for the Paleolithic in the Balkans. In this paper, our goal is to introduce the aims and methodologies of the new research collaboration at Crvena Stijena that we established in 2016. We first present the site within the context of the Middle Paleolithic of the western Balkans. We then describe the history of research at Crvena Stijena, and summarize the results of the last project, which were recently published1. Finally, we describe the research questions that are guiding our new investigations, and the methods we are applying in order to answer these questions while preserving as much of the site as possible for future generations of archaeologists. Keywords: Middle Paleolithic, Neanderthals, Balkans, fire, stone tools I. Uvod Nova istraživanja se sprovode u kontekstu saradnje Narodnog muzeja Crne Gore i Univerziteta Minesota, uspostavljene 2016. godine. Njihova svrha je ispitivanje sloja srednjeg paleolita na poznatom lokalitetu Crvena Stijena.U ovom radu predstavljamo istoriju istraživanja na Crvenoj stijeni, koja je iskopavana od 1954.

Gasparyan, Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology & Ethnography, ARMENIA For more than a century numerous archaeological sites attributed to the Middle Paleolithic have been investigated in the Southern Caucasus, but to date few have been excavated, analyzed, or dated using modern techniques. Thus only a handful of sites provide the contextual data necessary to address evolutionary questions regarding regional hominin adaptations and life-ways. This talk will consider current archaeological research in the Southern Caucasus, specifically that being conducted in the Republic of Armenia. While the relative frequency of well-studied Middle Paleolithic sites in the Southern Caucasus is low, those considered in this talk, Nor Geghi 1 (late Middle Pleistocene) and Lusakert Cave 1 (Upper Pleistocene), span a variety of environmental, temporal, and cultural contexts that provide fragmentary glimpses into what were complex and evolving patterns of subsistence, settlement, and mobility over the last ~200,000 years. While a sample of two sites is too small to attempt a serious reconstruction of Middle Paleolithic life-ways across such a vast and environmentally diverse region, the sites

CLOTTES J. (dir.) 2012. — L’art pléistocène dans le monde / Pleistocene art of the world / Arte pleistoceno en el mundo Actes du Congrès IFRAO, Tarascon-sur-Ariège, septembre 2010 – Symposium « Signes, symboles, mythes et idéologie… » Symbolism and becoming a hunter-gatherer Iain DAVIDSON* I dedicate this paper to the memory of Andrée Rosenfeld. From the time when, as an undergraduate, I read her book with Peter Ucko (Ucko & Rosenfeld 1967) that corrected the excesses of the structuralist approach to French cave “art” to the occasion of a visit to her home only months before she passed away, I found Andrée a model of good sense about all matters to do with all forms of rock “art”. She gave me and many others nothing but sound advice and managed to navigate between theory and data with more clear sight of her destination than most others. And she was, simply, one of the nicest people who ever became an archaeologist. She will be sorely missed. Pleistocene paintings and engravings are not art From time to time, we all worry about the use of the word “art” in connection with what we study (see review in Bradley 2009, Ch. 1). The images on rock and other surfaces that concern us here have some visual similarity with some of what is called art in other contexts, particularly when they are of great beauty (e.g. Chauvet et al. 1995; Clottes 2001). Yet the associations of art –paintings, sculptures and other works– over the last six hundred years (see e.g. Gombrich 1995) (or perhaps only three hundred according to Shiner 2001), mean that it is highly unlikely that any paintings or engraved images on rocks or in caves relate to social, economic, and cultural circumstances similar in any way to those of art in the twenty-first century.

Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Ayala Levin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. Based on their labor-Zionism settler-colonial experience,

  • The Compositional Integrity of the Aurignacian
MUNIBE (Antropologia-Arkeologia) 57 Homenaje a Jesús Altuna 107-118 SAN SEBASTIAN 2005 ISSN 1132-2217 The Compositional Integrity of the Aurignacian La integridad composicional del Auriñaciense KEY WORDS: Aurignacian, lithic typology, lithic technology, organic technology, west Eurasia. PALABRAS CLAVE: Auriñaciense, tipología lítica, tecnología lítica, tecnología orgánica, Eurasia occidental. Geoffrey A. CLARK* Julien RIEL-SALVATORE* ABSTRACT For the Aurignacian to have heuristic validity, it must share a number of defining characteristics that co-occur systematically across space and time. To test its compositional integrity, we examine data from 52 levels identified as Aurignacian by their excavators. Classical indicators of the French Aurignacian are reviewed and used to contextualize data from other regions, allowing us to assess whether or not the Aurignacian can be considered a single, coherent archaeological entity. LABURPENA Baliozkotasun heuristikoa izateko, Aurignac aldiak espazioan eta denboran zehar sistematikoki batera gertatzen diren ezaugarriak partekatu behar ditu. Haren osaketa osotasuna ebaluatzeko, beren hondeatzaileek ‘Aurignac aldikotzat” identifikaturiko 52 mailetatik ateratako datuak aztertzen ditugu hemen. Aurignac aldi frantziarraren adierazle “klasikoak” berrikusten dira beste hainbat eskualdetatik lorturiko datuak bere testuinguruan jartzeko Aurignac aldia entitate arkeologiko bakar eta koherentetzat jo daitekeen aztertzea helburu.
