Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 26, 2017 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. — Isaiah 49:15

In the first reading from the Book of Isaiah we hear God’s eternal promise to God’s people” I will never forget you.” Being a child of God means you can be assured that you will never be forgotten, never be abandoned, and never be alone. What a promise! But for this promise to be completely fulfilled it is not enough for us to simply bask in the radiance of God’s unfailing love: we must challenge ourselves to be the mirror that reflects this love into the world. Imagine a world in which each person knew that they would never be abandoned or forgotten. Imagine the change this could make in the cultures of fear and distrust we see and experience in the world. We cannot love with the same limitless perfection as God, but we can try to emulate God’s fierce persistence in showing love in our individual lives. We can each make the promise to another individual “ I will never forget you.” We can, with God’s help, ensure that this person does not feel abandoned and is never alone. Then they, empowered by our reflection of God’s endless love, can in turn shine it on one other person until someday all people on God’s earth, who are already loved completely by God, can fully experience this love and trust in the promise that they will never be forgotten. Always Forward, Never Back

St. Paul had both a deep understanding and appreciation for stewardship — what it meant to be a good steward. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, our Second Reading on this last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Lent begins, Paul states eloquently, “Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.”

As is the case with all Holy Scripture, Paul is writing to more than the Corinthians; he is writing to each of us as well. Paul’s understanding of what a steward was is that he manages the household of God. Managing included preserving and protecting. We are also to be servants (disciples) of Christ, and Paul goes on to say that a servant steward must be trustworthy. To Paul that meant we are to be faithful in order to be good disciples.

There are several difficulties for us in all of those terms and requirements: being stewards, being servants, and being faithful. They mean that we have to place ourselves second to others and second most of all to Christ our Savior. We tend to question this and tend to have strong feelings of independence. That is what we learn from our society. Yet, to be a steward like Paul requires us to be humble and accepting. That may be our greatest test.

St. Augustine wrote, “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others.” That, too, is stewardship.

Carmel Mission’s Junipero Serra School

The Junipero Serra School Curriculum – A Summary

Nationally Accredited Junipero Serra School is accredited through the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) and recognized by the National Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS). You are invited to examine the WCEA facts and guidelines as well as the Junipero Serra School accreditation report in full. This information can be located at the Junipero Serra School website: wwwstjuniperoserraschool.org.

Preschool through Eighth Grade Class Structure Junipero Serra School, located at the historic Carmel Mission (founded by St. Junipero Serra), is inclusive of students from all over the Carmel/Monterey/Salinas area. All JSS teachers are state-certified (or enrolled in a teacher program) and have earned bachelor degrees and higher. Grades preschool through 6 are self-contained with students exchanging classes when appropriate for Spanish, Technology, Art, Physical Education, Music, and Library. Grades 7 and 8 are departmentalized with a teacher serving as both a homeroom teacher and subject specific teacher. The rigorous curriculum meets the California State Standards and is designed to provide the students with high engagement in all subjects, while inspiring them to seek academic success in high school and at the university level. The JSS grade level expectations are based on the California K – 12 Learning Standards issued by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Junipero Serra School takes pride in offering a challenging curriculum of instruction in all subject areas. Curriculum subject areas include religion, English/language arts (reading, writing, spelling, speaking, listening), mathematics, social studies (history, geography, civics), science, fine arts (music, art), physical education, health, and computer studies.

Beyond the Common Core In addition to studying core subjects, JSS students become well-rounded individuals through instruction in the following areas:

Religion. As a Catholic School, building a Christian community is at the center of everything we do. Junipero Serra School students receive daily instruction in religion. Together with formal classes, students participate in a wealth of community service projects, such as food drives to support the work of the Salvation Army, fundraisers to support Juvenile Diabetes Research, and support for a Gathering For Women. Both Catholic and non-Catholic students share the benefits of value formation, opportunities for liturgy and private prayer, opportunities for service to the community, and orientation to scripture.

The Arts. All students study music and art. Parent volunteers are trained to act as art docents to give students exposure to art history and various visual art techniques.

Foreign Language. All students in grades Preschool through eighth study Spanish to give them an edge in high school foreign language classes, and to facilitate fluency in high school or college.

Technology. All students at JSS study and use technology to assist them in an in-depth study of various subjects. 7th and 8th grade students are assigned Chromebooks that allow them to collaborate through Google Docs, to share information, and to facilitate guided research.

Physical Education. An outstanding physical education meets the needs of JSS students through a variety of fitness and athletic activities. A full-time physical education teacher, also implements an intramural athletic program during lunch, and coaches extracurricular sports for JSS 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17

According to the Confessio of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday.
