You hold in your hands the first regional sourcebook For consistency, this book’s structure parallels that of the for The Dark Eye RPG. It explores the setting in depth and Aventuria Almanac and contains the same chapters and shows you why the so called Warring Kingdoms of Nostria sections to help you find your way around.     1 POEMS WRITTEN FOR, TO, OR CONCERNING TERESA GUICCIOLI edited by Peter Cochran [The poems here complement those in Poems about Italy .] Stanzas to the Po Stornelli To Teresa Guiccioli Francesca of Rimini “Could love for ever …” The Prophecy of Dante The date of birth of Teresa Gamba Ghiselli was unknown until quite recently: she was born in 1798. 1 Educated at Santa Chiara, a school run on principles advanced for the time, she was married to Alessandro Guiccioli – thirty-seven years her senior – on March 7th 1818. She had her first affair, with Cristoforo Ferri, in mid-1818, having met Byron briefly on March 10th of that year, at a Venetian conversazione held by the Countess Albrizzi. They met properly on the night of April 2nd / 3rd 1819 at the Countess Benzoni’s (just after Byron had dispatched Don Juan II to England), and fell in love. It was the last of Byron’s affairs, and lasted in theory until his death in 1824. It was a complete infatuation on both their parts – on being told in 1819 that Teresa was near to death, Byron contemplated suicide. Alessandro Guiccioli – with whom Byron shared an interest in the theatre – tolerated their liaison, and Byron even lived in his palazzo at Ravenna. Byron was friends with Teresa’s father, Ruggiero Gamba, and her brother Pietro, both of whom shared his liberal politics, dangerous in an Italy run by Rome and by the Austrians and Bourbons. The governments persecuted him by forcing the Gambas to move from state to state. I am grateful to Michael Fincham and Valeria Vallucci for their help in making these editions.

FOREWORD Dear Cyclists, Discovering Europe on a bicycle – the Rhine Cycle Route makes it possible. It runs from the Alps to a North Sea beach and on its way links Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. This guide will point the way. Within the framework of the EU-funded “Demarrage” project, the Rhine Cycle Route has been trans- formed into a top tourism product. For the first time, the whole course has been signposted from the source to the mouth. Simply follow the EuroVelo15 symbol. The Rhine Cycle Route is also the first long distance cycle path to be certified in accordance with a new European standard. Testers belonging to the German ADFC cyclists organisation and the European Cyclists Federation have examined the whole course and evaluated it in accordance with a variety of criteria. This guide is another result of the European cooperation along the Rhine Cycle Route. We have broken up the 1233-kilometre course up into 13 sections and put together cycle-friendly accom- modation, bike stations, tourist information and sightseeing attractions – the basic package for an unforgettable cycle touring holiday.

Auch hier werden keine eindeutigen Ergebnisse erzielt, und die Erkenntnis, dass die bis ins 19. Jahrhundert oberirdisch sichtbaren Großbauten, wie die Stadtmauer, besonders dem Stein- raub ausgesetzt waren, hilft nicht wirklich weiter. Dass Flurnamen und Sagen nicht wesentlich zur Klärung „des Großen Rätsels“ beitragen können, verwundert ebenfalls nicht. Insgesamt wird mit viel Aufwand, vielen (unnötigen) Exkursen und anhand wahllos zusammen- gestellter archäologischer, aber auch moderner Beispiele aufgezeigt, dass eine Erdbebenzerstörung in der Regel sich aus dem archäologischen Befund nicht eindeutig herauslesen lässt. Dies führt zu der berechtigten Warnung, nicht allzu schnell von Erdbebenzerstörungen auszugehen, sondern die viel- fältigen Ursachen für diverse Schadensbilder mit zu bedenken. Welches Potenzial für die Fragestel- lung in gut gegrabenen, gut dokumentierten archäologischen Befunden liegt, scheint in diesem Buch vielfach auf. Man hätte sich gewünscht, dass dies vermehrt in der schematischen Darstellung unter- schiedlicher Szenarien dargestellt worden wäre,

Her child­ hood was passed among the wild mountain scenery of Wales; and before she was nineteen years of age, she had a printed collection of verses before the world.^ From this period to the end of her history she sent forth volume after volume, each surpassing its prede­ cessor in tenderness and beauty. At nineteen she Vv-as married to Captain HEMANS, of the Fourth regiment. He was of an irritable tempera­ ment, and his health had been injured by the vicis­ situdes of a military life. They lived together unhap­ pily for several years, when Captain HEMANS left England for Italy and never returned. Mrs. HEMANS continued to reside with her mother and her sister. Miss MAUY ANNE BUOWNE, now Mrs, GRAY, a poetess of some reputation, near St. Asaph, in North Wales, where she devoted her attention to literature and to the education of her children, five sons, in whom all her affections from this time v/ere centered. Here she wiote The Restoration of the Works of Art to Italy, Modern Greece, Translations from Camoens, Wallace, (iv) Dartmoor, The Sceptic, Welsh Melodies, Historic Scenes, The Siege of Valencia, The Vespers of Palermo, The Forest Sanctuary, The Songs of the Affections, Records of Women, and the lays of Many Lands.
