VICKY SMALL This production is dedicated in loving memory of Vicky Small. Violet Hope Small made her final curtain call, peacefully, on Saturday evening July 23 in the presence of family and loved ones. Throughout her life, as both a guidance counselor in Harlem, NY schools and as a costume designer in Off-Broadway theaters in New Jersey and Florida, Vicky was able to “Mother” literally thousands of young people. “Vicky Small was a devoted costumer who came to FST as a volunteer and went on to work for Florida Studio Theatre for over twenty years,” says Richard Hopkins, Producing Artistic Director. “A school teacher in her first life, a devoted wife and mother at home, and a true ‘servant of the people’ through the art she loved. She was an example for us all. She was a dear friend, a mother to us all, a tireless lover of the theatre, and one of the many ‘great souls’ who keep this world on its axis. She will be sorely missed.” Susan Angermann, former Costume Shop Manager, had a very close working relationship with Vicky Small. She says “Vicky’s dining table at home was really an auxiliary costume shop. Long hours and last minute changes never diminished her passion for costuming and FST. When I was new to Sarasota and learning the theatre world here, she was a great supporter. Her caring and commitment made working together on many productions always a pleasure.” Many guest artists also had the pleasure of working with Vicky. Guest costume and set designer Marcella Beckwith says “During the 25 plus years I worked with Vicky Small as colleague and friend, I encountered a generous, accomplished, proficient, sometimes exasperating woman who was a consummate costumer, a trusted advisor, a good friend but above all else, she was loyal, to her friends, to her family, to the world she believed in; she inspired us all to be the best we could be.” FST FORUMS Sun Records Studios and Sam Phillips Phillips had an open style and insightful guidance that seemed to allow musicians to search and feel their way to a point to where they would perform beyond his and their own expectations. He recorded looking for a feel, not technical perfection, and was always seeking what he called the perfect/imperfect cut. This meant that it was not technically perfect, but perfectly conveyed the feeling and emotion and gave the song a living personality, partially Sun Records Studio. due to it being technically imperfect. “Everyone knew that I was just a struggling cat down here trying to develop new and different artists, and get some freedom in music, and tap some resources and people that weren’t being tapped.” - Sam Phillips Sam Phillips during a recording session.

FST FORUMS Dyanne to Marilyn: Elvis’ Mystery Woman by Jordan Nickels There are eight characters in Million Dollar Quartet: the four music legends, their two back up musicians, the head of Sun Records Sam Phillips, and a woman named Dyanne who came along with Elvis. However, even though Elvis’ girlfriend did come to the recording studio that night, her name was not Dyanne. This woman is loosely based on Elvis’ short-term girlfriend at the time. She is mentioned in Peter Guralnick’s 1994 Elvis biography during Elvis’ vacation in Las Vegas, November of 1956. “He stayed at the New Frontier with his cousin Gene and attended all the shows. At the outset of his visit he dated Marilyn Evans, a dancer at the New Frontier, and invited her to come see him in Memphis in December.” A month later, she showed up with Elvis at Sun Studio Records. The only information we know about Marilyn Evans is from the people who were there the night of the jam session. She was nineteen years old at the time and only dated Elvis for a few weeks. While Guralnick got this information from first-person sources, there is still no concrete evidence of Marilyn’s existence, except for the Million Dollar Quartet recording and the famous photograph of the quartet. In the recording, halfway through the audio tape of the jam session, you can hear a female’s voice asking, “Would this rover boys trio sing ‘Farther Along’?” The voice is believed to be Marilyn’s, but other accounts credit Sam’s secretary Marion Keisker with asking the question. The photograph taken in Memphis that night was also allegedly cropped to feature the quartet; the unedited version shows a girl believed to be Evans.
