July 9, 2020 Local Exhibit Highlights Work of Self-Taught Southern Artist Felicia Feaster Enjoyment of self-taught art may depend on how much you want to swim around in another human being’s headspace. Are you in the mood to contemplate the conditions that foster both creativity, but also the darker byways of obsession and personal experience? With much art, it is possible to separate the maker from her work. You can glide across the pleasures of surface, technique and subject matter. But self-taught art gives you no such opportunity or out; part of the bargain is, in fact, a deep dive into biography. And in the Atlanta Contemporary show “The Life and Death of Charles Williams,” there’s no getting around the strange, fascinating and sometimes troubling reality of this Kentucky artist’s life. There is both joy and pain in Williams’ experience, and in his art. It’s hard not to revel in the unique point of view of this utterly idiosyncratic Black Southern artist while also feeling saddened by his circumstance and limitations. Like so many self-taught artists, Williams defiantly marched to his own arrhythmic beat. He spent a lifetime making art that acted out the kind of dramas of might and right that children cling to: art fueled by comic book tales of brawny, powerful, justice-minded superheroes with cut-glass jawlines, tree trunk thighs and hyper-articulated Tom of Finland musculature. In fact, Williams learned to draw, like so many kids, by rendering favorite heroes like Dick Tracy and Superman. But while kids eventually give up those superficial parables of good and evil, Williams clung to them. -

The National Security Act of 1947 established a of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Council. The secret "NSC-68" document of 1950 advocated the development of hydrogen bomb, the rapid buildup of conventional forces, a worldwide sys tem of alliances with anti-Communist governments, and the unpn~ce'Clent€~CI mobilization of American society. That document became a blueprint for waging the cold war over the next twenty years. These years also saw the pas sage of the McCarran Internal Security Act (requiring all Communist organizations and their members to register with the government) and the n the era of Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich, some look back upon the rise of Senator Joseph McCarthy and his virulent but unsubstantiated charges 1950s as "a age of innocence and simplicity" (Miller and Nowak of Communists in the federal government. -

Legends Of Motown: Celebrating The Supremes Opening June 25 New Exhibit Features Rare Artifacts from the Premier Motown Records Act Founding Supremes Member Ms. Mary Wilson to Appear at the GRAMMY Museum June 24 For Intimate Interview and Q&A LOS ANGELES (June 5, 2015) — The GRAMMY Museum will explore the enduring legacy and influence of Motown Records' premier recording artists with the unveiling of Legends Of Motown: Celebrating The Supremes on June 25, 2015. The exhibit will offer visitors a unique look at the life and career of one of the most successful American singing groups of the '60s, the Supremes, through rare artifacts from the private collection of founding member Ms. Mary Wilson. On display on the Museum's third floor through spring 2016, the exhibit will feature rare photographs from the personal collection of Mary Wilson; concert posters; tour books, fan memorabilia; and an assortment of performance gowns, including: "Primette Pristine" gowns worn in 1961, one of the earliest sets purchased by the Supremes when they were still known as the Primettes "White De Mink" outfit worn on ABC's "The Hollywood Palace" in 1966 "Turquoise Freeze" dresses worn during a 1967 appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" "Red Hot" gown worn by Mary Wilson on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1970 for the debut of the new Supremes lineup featuring Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell "We've been eager to feature an exhibit celebrating Motown since we honored Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson at our inaugural benefit gala in 2013," said Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum. -

WORLD OF THE BOOK Books are mirrors of many worlds: worlds here and distant, past and present, real and imagined. Through text and image, they act as keepers of ideas, of knowledge and of stories. This exhibition showcases many of the rare, beautiful and historically significant books held by this Library on behalf of the Victorian community. It celebrates the unique place of books in our hearts and minds, taking you on a journey through the history of book production, design and illustration, from the medieval era to the present day. BOOKS AND IDEAS ‘[T]he book is an extension of the eye...’ Marshall McLuhan The history of ideas is mirrored in the history of the book. Books have altered the course of history itself, through the dissemination of ideas that have changed how we think about the world and ourselves. In many cultures across different eras, books have played a highly symbolic and iconic role. There was a time when it was thought that the world’s knowledge could be collected between the covers of a book. The information explosion of recent times now makes it impossible to contain the world’s knowledge within one library, let alone in one book, yet books continue to be a powerful means of informing and inspiring new generations. The Dome Galleries You are standing in what was once the book stacks for the whole library. This photograph shows the storage of ‘elephant folios’ (very large books) in this very spot. Librarians used the spiral metal stairs to retrieve the books requested by readers sitting at desks below in the Dome Reading Room.
