    SGA releases statement of student values By Avery Rowlison Following up on a Joint Board resolution, SGA recently drafted a Student Statement of Values for Grinnell. Throughout the year, an SGA committee met weekly to write the Statement of Values. They began by brainstorming values that they thought were important to students on campus. “We found that they fell into three broad categories … community, communication and diversity,” said SGA President Ben Offenberg ’11, who led the committee. From there, the committee carefully expanded each idea into writing. “We didn’t rush it,” Offenberg said. “I was very cautious … because I wanted us to have time and really adjust what we wanted to get at.” Though the document has been mostly well received, some students, such as Tom Elliott ’11, don’t think it is necessary or fair. “By creating a document that says that these are the values of Grinnell is basically excluding any other values,” Elliott said. “I also don’t see that this is something that students really want.” Supporters of the Statement of Values disagree, such as committee member Camila Barrios Camacho ’12. “I think this is something that we’ve needed for a while and is something that many of our peer institutions have implemented already,” she said referring to the student statement of values at St. Olaf College, University of Colorado at Boulder and Lewis and Clark College. Opponents contend that the statement is limiting and oppressive because it attempts to define the values of each student on campus without everyone’s input. However, the committee in charge of creating the document is very diverse and represents a wide variety of student interests in campus, according to Offenberg.

Indigo is its own cyborg world, utilizing the artful mechanisms of human touch with the precision of technology to create the classic, pristine sound Tatum has been seeking his entire career. It finds Tatum at his most efficient, calculated, and confident after a decade of making music as Wild Nothing. On one hand, Indigo is a return to the fresh, transcendent sweep of his debut, 2010’s Gemini, and on the other, a culmination of heights reached, paths traveled, and lessons learned while creating the follow-ups, Nocturne and Life of Pause. To make Indigo, Tatum confronted the Man vs. Machine dichotomy by seizing on the surrounding synergy. Wild Nothing will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of debut album Gemini with a special run of spring shows co-headlined by Beach Fossils. All ​ ​ ​ ​ dates can be found below and tickets are on sale this Friday, January 10th, at 12PM Eastern. Laughing Gas is the third EP from Wild Nothing, and follows his recently released album, Live ​ ​ From Brooklyn Steel. Tatum delves deeper into the territory where he thrives: namely, the ​ synth and sophisti-pop of the 1980s. Working within a more mechanical and synthetic framework than his previous releases, Wild Nothing continues to delicately toe the line between the organic and the unnatural. These are still pop songs, but there’s an underlying sense of uneasiness that threads the music together. Recorded in Los Angeles and Richmond with the help of Jorge Elbrecht, these five songs ​ ​ were originally imagined alongside last year's Indigo and were written and tracked ​ ​ simultaneously with the album. When work on the full-length was nearing completion, Tatum set these ideas aside; they seemed to fit better on their own. In spare moments between tours, Tatum began to look back and piece the songs together at his home studio in Richmond, reconnecting with Elbrecht to mix the EP.
