Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh tells a story of layered exiles and displacement, revealing hidden narratives of violence and grief while exposing struggles over gendered expectations of being good and respectable women and men. It brings to light the multiple ways of arranging lives and forming caring relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home, and offers insights into the relations of power and violence that are embedded in the peace. • Indian Influences in the Supernatural Elements Found in the Malay Classic Films of Dewi Murni, Gul Bakawali and Selendang Delima
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences 2017, Vol. 7, No. 11 ISSN: 2222-6990 Indian Influences in the Supernatural Elements Found in the Malay Classic Films of Dewi Murni, Gul Bakawali and Selendang Delima Sumathi Maniam Raj Department of Performing Arts, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia Raja Morgan Veerappan Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Antarabangsa, Malaysia DOI: 10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i11/3502 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i11/3502 Abstract The paper examines that the supernatural elements found in the Malay movies DewiMurni 1950 directed by B.S. Rajhans, SelendangDelima 1958 directed by K.M. Basker and Gul Bakawali 1963 directed by B. Narayanan Rao which are heavily embedded with Indian elements. Analysis into the films’ repertoires have shown striking parallels and significant differences between the Malay films and its Indian versions. Dewi Murni is derived from Kalidasa’s Shakuntala. Excerpts from the Brahmavaivarta Purana and Ramayana are used in the narration of Selendang Delima which is the story of a nymph’s offspring who is cursed and subjected to cruelty. GulBakawali is obtained from a Persian story and deciphered to Hindustani in 1702 by Niphal Chand (Zainal Abidin Ahmad, 1942: 144). Sheikh Mohd. Ali bin Ghulam Hussein Alhandi (an Indian Muslim) is reponsible for translating Gul Bakawali from an Urdu / Hindi text. Elements that have come to be accepted as the culture of the Malay world is the outcome of Indianisation in the region (Noor 2005: 32). One has to agree with Farish Noor when he states ‘that the Malay world has a number of lasting legacies’ (Noor 2005: 32).

Borneo Research Journal, Volume 6, December 2012, 58-74 THE CONSTRUCTION OF TRADITIONAL WATER VILLAGE HOUSE OF BRUNEIAN MALAY IN LIMBANG, SARAWAK 1Amaluddin Bakeri & 2Mohammad Raduan Mohd. Ariff 1Independent author 2Mohammad Raduan Mohd. Ariff Department of Southeast Asian Studies University of Malaya ([email protected]) Abstract In Limbang, Sarawak, most of the Bruneian Malays live in water village area. Bruneian Malays are the main ethnic group living in the water village of Limbang River bank and the coast of the Brunei Bay since the Bruneian Sultanate time. The houses of Bruneian Malay face the river or the sea. When the tide rises, the pillars of the houses will be submerged in the water, making the houses appear as if they are built on the top of the water. The construction of the Bruneian Malay houses of the water village has its customs and beliefs. The Bruneian Malays believe that only houses built by following the regulations of traditional customs and beliefs will last long, and the well-being of the residents can be guaranteed. These sets of customs and belief systems will also determine how the houses are constructed. This article will discuss the construction of traditional Bruneian Malay houses in the water village of Limbang in Sarawak in details. The initial stages of the construction, including choosing the construction spot, calculating the month, the day and the hour for the construction will be described first. Next, construct the pillars, and the frame of the house in teamwork will be presented; and finally, Bruneian Malay customs and beliefs of moving new houses will be discussed.

Page 1 of 15 Home » Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs » Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor » Releases » International Religious Freedom » 2010 Report on International Religious Freedom » East Asia and Pacific » Indonesia Indonesia BUREAU OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND LABOR International Religious Freedom Report 2010 November 17, 2010 The constitution provides for freedom of religion. The government generally respected religious freedom for the six officially recognized religions; however, ongoing restrictions, particularly on religions not sanctioned by the government and sects of the recognized religions considered deviant, were exceptions. The government prosecuted some individuals responsible for religiously tinged violence in Sulawesi and the Malukus. During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the government prevented several vigilante actions. However, it failed to prevent abuse and discrimination against religious groups by other private actors and at times failed to punish perpetrators of violence. Some hard-line Muslim groups opposed to religious pluralism engaged in violent activity against free religious expression, and various other activities deemed contradictory to their view of Islamic values. Members of minority religious groups continued to experience some official discrimination in the form of administrative difficulties, often in the context of civil registration of marriages and births, and/or the issuance of identity cards. There were a number of reports of societal abuses or discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice. Some hard-line Muslim groups used violence and intimidation to close at least 28 churches. Some of the churches remained closed. Only a few perpetrators of these and past abuses have been prosecuted. The U.S.
