The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1088 The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1088 th 8 March 2019 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk To help raise money for their prom, Year 11 held a raffle in which someone could win the chance to be Headteacher for the day. The winner was Lola Snell in Year 8. It was a very different way than usual to spend a Monday, speaking in front of the entire staff team, observing some of the humanities lessons and being on canteen duty. Overall I had such a blast! I got to explore the new North block and its new equipment, which was definitely very interesting and great fun predicting all the brilliant lessons that could take place within it. As well as this, I had the opportunity to listen in to the BBC Young Reporter session that was taking place that day, which opened my mind to the talent and work that is required to produce a news report. After a very confusing meeting about teaching, I signed the teachers’ paycheques, (you’re welcome!) and had a look at the renovation plans for the school’s student toilets. I had the chance to reward many students with R1s and an R4, and felt so proud of all the students I observed in lessons, as I could clearly see that they were hardworking and persevering Neilwith Hassellthe guidance of their teachers. Headteacher This day was definitely not what I had predicted it to be, and I had a great time during it, being able to see what it is really like to be the headteacher. It pleases me even more to know that the money I put forward to experience all this is going to a great cause. Overall, I believe that being headteacher for a day did affect my views of my future career path, as I never realised how much effort is required to succeed. I am so glad that I got to experience all that I did being your Headteacher. Library News The Carnegie Medal is the most prestigious children's book award. For many years we have run a shadowing group comprised of students and staff where we all read as many of the shortlisted books as possible, have lively discussions and vote for the book we think should win. If you would like to take part in this year's shadowing please come to the Library and add your name to the list. The shortlist for this year's award will be released on Tuesday 19th March and the first shadowing meeting will take place at lunchtime on that day. If you would like to know more please come to the Library and speak to Mrs Krajewski. Ski Trip 2019 We all had high expectations for the ski trip to USA, since the trip had such positive feedback after the last one. After 24 hours of travelling I think we were all wondering whether it would live up to all the hype. However, as soon as we got to the slopes we soon found that it was as amazing as we had hoped. Our skiing level progressed immensely throughout the trip as did our confidence levels. After starting on the training slopes, by the end of the week we were racing down black diamonds. To top off five incredible days of skiing, we got to shop till we dropped at Woodbury Common, saw spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline at night on our river cruise and then we spent the day seeing the sights! The trip was way better than any of us could have anticip ated. Isobel & Ellie 11N. Sixth Form Curriculum Guide 2018 Admissions THE SIXTH FORM AT BERKHAMSTED Sixth Form can bring some of the happiest days as students benefit from a real sense of purpose in preparing for the next phase of life and an increasing sense of responsibility as they act as role models and take on leadership positions. The main aim of Berkhamsted Sixth is to produce confident, ambitious, well-qualified and happy individuals who have the skills to rise to the challenges of the modern and ever-changing world. As nearly all our students go on to higher education, the Sixth Form has a strong academic focus. A level work is challenging and requires a high level of motivation and responsibility. Self-discipline is crucial, as is a willingness to be fully involved in academic study. Sixth Form students will receive encouragement and support to achieve their potential in their A levels, but they also need to commit themselves to working hard over two years. The Sixth Form also aims to develop other interests and skills - academic, cultural, physical and social. It is a time when the individual can explore ideas and learn to think independently in preparation for university and the professional world. Initiative, creativity and the enhancement of academic and professional skills are encouraged. We hope students will enjoy their time in the Sixth Form and feel able to make contributions to life at the school. Essentially, the Sixth Form provides invaluable preparation for life in the adult world. The strong House system is a key feature of the Sixth Form which helps the students to gain a sense of belonging to a community.
