From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.

    Narratives of cultural and professional redundancy: Ageing action stardom and the ‘geri-action’ film Glen Donnar (RMIT University) Abstract Focusing on The Expendables films, I identify the importance of discourses of professional and cultural redundancy in ‘geri-action’, an emergent subgenre of Hollywood action film that has revitalised the careers of ageing action stars such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. These redundancies, which hold long-standing significance in 1980s action film, are compounded in geri- action by advanced age and diminished physical capacity. In geri-action, the spectacle of once idealised, muscled bodies is concealed and displaced onto oversized guns, fetishised vehicles and younger action bodies. However much geri-action resists 1980s action stars’ use-by dates, it ultimately admits physical and generic exhaustion.     Keynotes Birgit Meyer, Utrecht University Mediation: Forms and Formats of World-Making Placing media – understood in a broad sense that surpasses a mere focus on “mass media” and ICT – in the broader framework of mediation calls attention to their socio-cultural embeddedness. Far from taking mediation as secondary to a reality “out there” that can only be represented partially and insufficiently, the starting point of this lecture is an understanding of mediation as key to (trans)forming worlds of lived experience. Mediation, in other words, is at the core of processes of world-making. Practices of mediation, and the media and technologies of reproduction on which they depend, evolve within historically constituted politics of authorization and authentication that address publics through specific aesthetics of persuasion. Approaching media as mediators that do not merely transmit but form and effect the message they convey, I argue, invites to explore processes of world- making “in action.” Based on ethnographic materials from my longstanding work on popular cinema in Ghana and beyond, my lecture will outline why and how “mediation” is a productive concept for anthropologists.
