See It Big! Action Features More Than 30 Action Movie Favorites on the Big
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films -

Cold War II: Hollywood's Renewed Obsession with Russia
H-USA Edited Collection: Cold War II: Hollywood’s Renewed Obsession with Russia Discussion published by Tatiana Konrad on Monday, August 13, 2018 Date: October 1, 2018 The Cold War, with its bald confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, has been widely depicted in film. Starting even before the conflict actually began with Ernst Lubitsch’s portrayals of communism in Ninotschka (1939), and ranging from Stanley Kubrick’s openly “Cold War” Dr. Strangelove (1963) to Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), Hollywood’s obsession with the Cold War, the Soviets/Russians, communism, and the political and ideological differences between the U.S. and Russia were pronounced. This obsession has persisted even after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Cold War tropes continue to be (ab)used, as can be seen in multiple representations of evil Russians on screen, including Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One (1997), Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 (2010), Phillip Noyce’s Salt (2010), Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), John Moore’s A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), and Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer (2014), to name just a few. All these films portray Russians in a rather similar manner: as members of the mafia or as plain criminals. Yet recently Hollywood cinema has made a striking turn regarding its portrayals of Russians, returning to the images of the Cold War. This turn and the films that resulted from it are what the collection proposes to examine. The sanctions imposed on Russia during the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 by several Western countries, including the United States, along with Trump’s admiration for Putin, Russian attempts to influence the 2016 American election, the fatal poisoning in the UK, etc., have led to a tense relationship between Russia and the Western world. -

Movie Review: ‘Creed II’
Movie Review: ‘Creed II’ NEW YORK — Moviegoers under 33 take note: You had yet to be born when “Rocky IV,” the 1985 film that hovers in the background of the sports drama “Creed II” (MGM), was released. While viewers of any age will know what to expect from this latest extension of the durable franchise long before they buy a ticket, the tried and true, against-the-odds formula still works somehow. Early on in this chapter of the saga, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), with the help of his hard-driving trainer, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), wins the world heavyweight championship. He also proposes to his live-in girlfriend, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), a singer who suffers from hearing loss. But the rise of Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), a rival Adonis feels compelled to take on, sets up an emotionally fraught match since the up-and-comer’s father and coach, Ivan (Dolph Lundgren), is the Russian fighter whose blows killed Adonis’ dad, Apollo, back in the Reagan era. (Rocky subsequently fought and beat Ivan.) Rocky continues to feel remorse over his opponent-turned-ally Apollo’s death and urges Adonis not to accept Viktor’s challenge, a stance that threatens to cause a breach in their close relationship. It’s a conflict Rocky can ill afford since the death of his wife and alienation from his son have left him emotionally isolated. He can still count on the loyal friendship of Apollo’s widow and Adonis’ adoptive mom, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad), however. Working from a script Stallone co-wrote with Juel Taylor, director Steven Caple Jr. -

It has been accepted for inclusion in Vietnam Generation by an authorized editor of La Salle University Digital Commons. For more information, please contact [email protected]. First Blood RecIrawn Don Kunz Nearly everyone speaking or writing about America's Vietnam soldier eventually feels compelled to mention Rambo. As David Morrell notes with pride, the name of the character he created in his novel. First Blood, has entered our nation's household vocabulary1. It resembles in this case the title of Joseph Heller's World War 2 novel. Catch 22. and the macho movie-star name of Marion Robert Morrison — John Wayne. There is more at stake in the popular adoption of those terms than a simple enlargement of the dictionary. The evolution of Rambo from character to icon illustrates the fictionalizing process by which history is accommodated to myth. Rambo is an ambiguous and contradictory epithet, its meaning shifting as a result of an elaborate revision process still underway. Morrell's protagonist has been appropriated variously as a symbol of American patriotism, mindless savagery, the frontier hero, and Frankenstein's monster. -

Shorter Communications Video Night in Nuku'alofa
SHORTER COMMUNICATIONS VIDEO NIGHT IN NUKU‘ALOFA: DISJUNCTURE AND DIFFERENCE ON TONGAN SCREENS SARINA PEARSON The University of Auckland On June 27th 2004, “Bollywood” became “Pollywood” when a team made up almost entirely of Polynesian girls won an Indian dance competition held for Auckland secondary school students. Their performance drew not upon classical forms of Indian dance but reflected the popular tastes of the Indian diaspora living in New Zealand, including Fiji Indians, long established Kiwi Indians and more recent professional migrants. The Tangaroa College girls won the contest on the strength of a Bollywood-inspired number. While the win seemed to surprise and amuse Indian journalists, the appeal of Bollywood films among Pacific Island communities and in their island homelands has been a relatively open secret. Despite widespread popular recognition that many Pacific communities are avid Hindi cinema fans, a cursory review of regional journals confirms that its influence in the Pacific is a phenomenon that has attracted relatively little attention among scholars. This oversight might be partially accounted for in terms of how anthropologists working in the region have historically constructed Pacific communities as objects of study and islands as sites of research. These constructions have tended to privilege indigenous communities over non-indigenous communities. In accordance with established methods of ethnographic methodology anthropologists have typically focused intensively upon single or unitary sites for observation and participation. Additionally, transnational media pose particularly thorny and vexed methodological problems for anthropologists accustomed to less mobile, transitory and potentially idiosyncratic cultural formations. Marcus (1995) suggests that one response to these conceptual and methodological challenges has been for research about transnational cultural formations to progressively migrate out of disciplines such as anthropology into interdisciplinary (or as he suggests “anti-disciplinary”) fields such as media studies. -
