ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Focusing on John Hughes’ ‘high concept’ family comedies, it examines how Hughes exploited the commercial opportunities offered by serial approaches to both production and film narrative. First, I consider why Hughes’ production set-up enabled him to standardize his movies and respond quickly to audience demand. My analysis then explores how the Home Alone films (1990-1997), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Baby’s Day Out (1994) balanced demands for textual repetition and novelty. Article: Described by the New York Times as ‘the most prolific independent filmmaker in Hollywood history’, John Hughes created and oversaw a vast number of movies in the 1980s and 1990s.1 In a period of roughly fourteen years, from the release of National Lampoon’s Vacation (Ramis, 1983) to the release of Home Alone 3 (Gosnell, 1997), Hughes received screenwriting credits on twenty-seven screenplays, of which he produced eighteen, directed eight and executive produced two. -

Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen. -

Rhodes Editorial Board: Kelly Basilio, Donna Campbell, Claire Perkins, Christopher Sharrett, and Yannis Tzioumakis ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of neglected American directors, from the once-famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture—its myths, values, and historical precepts. The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresent ed in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention. Growing resistance: Taro as the symbol of postcolonial Hawaiian identity __________ A thesis presented to the faculty of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Canterbury __________ In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts __________ by Charles Pipes February 2020 ii iii Abstract Taro is a root vegetable that has held important dietary, spiritual, and social roles with Native Hawaiian culture for centuries. The cultivation and management of the taro plant was a significant foundation of ancient Hawaiian society. Following the 19th century Western colonization of Hawaii, and the ensuing degradation of the indigenous culture, taro cultivation went into a steep decline as a result of land alienation, commercialization, and resources being designated for alternative, non- native crops. In the years following annexation by the United States, there was a growing Hawaiian identity and sovereignty movement. This thesis examines how taro became a potent symbol of that movement and Indigenous Hawaiian resistance to Western hegemony. The thesis will examine taro’s role as a symbol of resistance by analyzing the plant’s traditional uses and cultivation methods, as well as the manner in which Hawaiian taro was displaced by colonial influence. This resistance, modeled after the Civil Rights Movement and American Indian Movement in the United States, used environmental, spiritual, and cosmological themes to illustrate the Hawaiian movement’s objectives. Taro cultivation, encapsulating nearly every aspect of traditional Hawaiian society and environment, became a subtle form of nonviolent protest. To examine taro farming from this perspective, the plant’s socioeconomic, spiritual, and biological aspects will be explored. -
Mature Masculinity and the Ageing Action Hero
Meijer Rebecca Feasey Mature masculinity and the ageing action hero The ageing male action hero is a figure many are familiar with through the character of Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series. However, physical strength, speeds and agility are usually not associated with old age. Whether age makes a difference in the action hero genre is a question Rebecca Feasey deals with in this article. Introduction Much work within the field of film and gender studies has attempted to theorise, unmask and deconstruct the representation of the male action hero, paying particular attention to the spectacular body and the herculean physical performances of characters such as John McClane/Bruce Willis, Martin Riggs/Mel Gibson and Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. And yet, at a time when these stars are returning to the action roles that made them famous, in some cases, several decades later, scholars continue to ignore and overlook the fundamental notion of age in their discussions of the hard bodied, hegemonic hero. After all, hegemonic masculinity has associations with physical prowess, sexual virility, social dominance and aggression, which are potentially at odds with the image of the ageing male. With this in mind, I propose to examine the representation of the ageing action hero in the popular and long running Die Hard (1988, 1990, 1995, 2007) franchise, and consider the ways in which the mature masculinity on offer is seen to either be confirming to or challenging the hegemonic ideal. Hegemonic masculinity and male hierarchies Although there are a myriad of masculinities in existence at any one moment, this is not to say that each one is treated equally or granted the same level of social, sexual or economic power. -
