Data from Demographia World Urban Areas (http://www.demographia.com/db-worldua.pdf) February 1, 2010 I picked up a copy of The Wall Street Journal-Europe on the concourse while boarding my Emirates Air flight from Paris to Dubai in late November of 2009. The lead story provided an unexpected relevance to the trip --- my first to Dubai. Dubai World, owned by the Dubai government, had announced a 6-month moratorium on payments of some of its $60 billion in debt. Since the announcement, stock markets have been dropping and recovering, company officials have attempted to calm borrowers and government officials have provided less assurance than Dubai’s investors might have preferred, though richer, neighboring Abu Dhabi backstopped Dubai with $10 billion in December. The United Arab Emirates: Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which like the United States and Canada is a federation. Broadly speaking, the emirates are as states or provinces. By far the richest is Abu Dhabi, with something like 10% of the world’s oil reserves.

  • Major High-Rise Fires
Major High-rise Fires 1970 — 1 New York Plaza is a 50-story skyscraper in New York City that suffered a severe fire and explosion on August 5, 1970. The fire started around 6:00 PM on the 33rd and 34th floors and burned for more than six hours. It caused shear connections to fail and beams to drop onto girder flanges, resulting th in a partial collapse of the 34 floor. The rest of the steel structure remained standing. See http://911research.wtc7.net/wtc/analysis/compare/fires.html and https://www.wpi.edu/Pubs/ETD/Available/etd-050406- 105306/unrestricted/rnacewicz.pdf 1975 — World Trade Center North Tower, otherwise known as WTC 1, was still a 110-story skyscraper when its 11th floor suffered a fire from an unknown cause on February 13, 1975. The fire started shortly before midnight in a furnished office on the 11th floor and spread through some 65% of the floor (the core plus half the office area). By the time firefighters arrived, flames were also spreading vertically via telephone cable openings in the floor slab, causing subsidiary fires from the 9th to the 19th floors. The fire lasted more than three hours and did an estimated $2 million worth of damage. Cleaning and service personnel were evacuated without any fatalities. However, of the 150 firefighters at the scene, 28 sustained injuries from the intense heat and smoke. According to Captain Harold Kull of Engine Co. 6, "It was like fighting a blow torch. Flames could be seen pouring out of 11th floor windows on the east side of the building." The structural steel trusses, undamaged, did not need to be replaced.

Introduction New Year’s Eve celebrations in Dubai were marred by the fire in The Address Downtown Hotel and residential building, opposite the Burj Khalifa, the world’s highest skyscraper. The exterior of the supertall (302m) The Address was consumed in flames and thick black smoke, with more than 40 storeys burning simultaneously at one stage. Investigations are in hand, but the fire in Dubai’s 18th tallest tower appears to be similar to the fires in the external cladding of the 352m Marina Torch residence (21 February 2015) and of the Tamweel Tower (18 November 2012). Fire spread in external cladding has been the primary issue not only in these three major Dubai fires, but in others in the Middle East and China.

Philip Oldfield The year 2008 will long be remembered as the start of an economic crisis that has gripped the entire globe – a year that may also have brought to an abrupt end the worldwide construction boom of the past decade that has seen ever-denser cities containing ever-taller buildings proposed from Madrid to the Middle East, from Shanghai to San Francisco. As financial shock waves have reverberated around the world, high-profile tall building projects in virtually all skyscraper cities have been cancelled, delayed, or put on hold in response to the precarious global economic conditions. The question that everyone is now asking – is this the end of the tall ambitions of places such as Moscow, Chicago or Dubai for the short-mid term future? The Antony Wood correlation between tall buildings and economic recession is not a new one.
