Robin Hanson Statement on Teaching Long ago I was one of the top teaching assistants at the University of Chicago physics department. I had to learn to translate this ability into teaching economics here. For example, I learned that students are far more willing to believe physicists about physics, than to believe economists about economics. To help overcome this skepticism, I run some classroom experiments in my microeconomics courses. These experiments give students a good initial hook for the concepts of marginal value and cost, and they show that standard theory predicts experimental outcomes reasonably well. One physics practice that translates well to economics is “back of the envelope” analysis. For example, I ask why poets are paid less than romance novelists, and teachers are paid less than garbage men (hint: note supply side effects). And I ask whether a subsidy or tax would best correct for law mower externalities (hint: neighbors can negotiate easily). While many undergraduates prefer teachers to give them the one true answer on policy questions, I try to avoid taking sides. In class discussions, I ask students to take and defend policy positions, and then I defend any undefended major positions, and mention any unmentioned major criticisms of these positions. The important thing is for students to understand the sorts of arguments that an economist would respect. I am big on normative analysis. I review how normative economics differs from normative analysis elsewhere, and the basic types of market failure. I cover counter- arguments that most teachers don’t cover, such as consistency checks (e.g., if this were the failure then we should also see that) and minimal interventions (e.g., this milder alternative should work just as well). -

INTRODUCTION On a foggy October night in 1707, a fleet of Royal Navy warships ran aground on the Isles of Scilly, some twenty miles southwest of England.1 Believing themselves to be safely west of any navigational hazards, two thousand sailors discovered too late that they had fatally misjudged their position.2 Although the search for an accurate method to determine longitude had bedeviled Europe for several centuries, the “sudden loss of so many lives, so many ships, and so much honor all at once” elevated the discovery of a solution to a top national priority in England.3 In 1714, Parliament issued the Longitude Act,4 promising as much as £20,0005 for a “Practicable and Useful” method of determining longitude at sea; fifty-nine years later, clockmaker John Harrison claimed the prize.6 Nearly three centuries after the fleet’s tragic demise, another accident, also fatal but far removed from longitude’s terrestrial reach, struck a nation deeply. Molecular manufacturing is a method conceived for the processing and rearrangement of atoms to fabricate custom products. It would rely on the use of a large number of molecular electro-mechanical subsystems working in parallel and using commonly available chemicals. Built to atomic specification, the products would exhibit order-of-magnitude improvements in strength, toughness, speed, and efficiency, and be of high quality and low cost. In Part 1: Technical Issues, I pro- vide an overview of molecular nanotechnology and explore ways in which molecu- lar manufacturing could be applied to improve textile products. -

To Intercontinental to Interplanetary to Intersolar
Why Editorials? Why some, not all? In compiling the MMM Classics volumes, with precious few exceptions, editorials were not included. Why? Yes, some addressed temporary conditions, and are of no lasting interest. But indeed, many MMM editorials through the years have addressed concerns that remain pertinent today, if indeed they are not timeless. So we have taken another look and here reprint those “In Focus” editorials that, we think, speak to conditions and issues still very relevant today. These pieces represent the editor’s opinions alone, and have never been presented as the opin- ions or policies of the Lunar Reclamation Society, the National Space Society, the Artemis Society, or the Moon Society. There are none for the first year, as we didn’t start writing editorials until MMM #11. The Topics: The relation between the Moon and Mars in Manned Space Exploration Policy is clearly the num- ber one issue addressed. What we mean by “space” difers widely among “space proponents.” This is a critical issue. Space is more than the boundary layer of Earth, a place for space stations and satellites. This is a realm already part of Earth’s “econosphere” and will take care of itself. It is the endless fron- tier, beyond that needs our attention. The endless hiatus between Apollo 17 and what we all want to come next is a key topic. There is much we can do to make the next human lunar opening a stronger and more lasting one. Asteroids, promise and threat, are looked at and put in perspective with a nearer term threat: space debris, which could end up confining humans forever on our home world. -

On this occasion he attracted physicists’ attention to the vast potential of working at the scale of the nanometre if not the ångström, using the catchy title: “Plenty of Room at the Bottom” [Feynman 1959]. This hookline from a famous Nobel laureate physicist served as a motto for the emerging field of nanoscience and nanotechnology (which we will here abbreviate to nanoresearch) in the early 2000s. -

Tibbetts TIBBETTS INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERVIEW: The second filmin the "Star Trek" series, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, is now playing to packed theaters across the nation. The first film, guided by Gene Roddenberry and Robert Wise, was a thoughtfulexcursion into some of the philosophical implications of the original television series. The second film,according to George Takei, is "high adventure" all the way. Shooting began on Stage 9 at Paramount on November 9, 1981; principal photography concluded on January 29, 1982. It was directed by Nicholas (Time After Time) Meyer, scripted by Jack B. Sowards from a story by Harve Bennett and Jack Sowards, and produced by Harve Bennett and Robert Sallin. Needless to say, Mr. George Takei is delighted at the continuing success story of the "Star Trek" franchise.. George is a multitalented performer who, long before he donned the uniform and personna of "Sulu," had demonstrated a flair for the theatre. His first professional job in film entertainment was as a voice dubber forthe classic Japanese science fiction film,Rodan (1957). He appeared before the movie cameras for the first time while a student at UCLA. The film was Ice Palace (1960) with Richard Burton, Robert Ryan and Carolyn Jones. He also debuted on television for an episode of Playhouse 90 at this, same time. Then came many guest shots on other television series, including Hawaiian Eye, Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, and Adventures in Paradise. The role of "Sulu," the helmsman for the U S. S. -

This time the subject is the emergence of governance structures within online communities and the visions of political sovereignty shaping some of those communities. Ludlow views virtual communities as laboratories for conducting experiments in the Peter Ludlow construction of new societies and governance structures. While many online experiments will fail, Ludlow argues that given the synergy of the online world, new and superior governance structures may emerge. The fourth section looks at specific experimental governance and Pirate Utopias structures evolved by online communities.
