    From America’s Army to Call of Duty: Doing Battle with the Military Entertainment Complex Robin Andersen and Marin Kurti This paper explores the collaboration between the Pentagon and the entertainment industries at the site of the popular interactive format, the war-themed video game. The commercial media in- dustry is heavily invested in the research and development of digital technologies used to create simulations, graphics, and virtual worlds, which are also essential to the networked proto- cols of military training and weapons systems. In addition, video games such as America’s Army have been developed by the United States Armed Forces as recruitment tools. With advances in digital computer-based technologies, war- themed games make increasing claims to realism, authenticity and historical accuracy. Real war footage is frequently inserted into narratives and battlefield sequences. We compare the narra- tives of the experiences of gamers to narratives of recruits and soldier’s experiences of war. Though war themed interactive games are taking simulated battlefields to higher levels of real- ism, including more intense graphic violence, the thrilling excite- ment of entertainment replaces the emotional truth of war, a trend with highly negative consequences. On August 18, 2007, 90 veterans and active duty service mem- bers stood in front of an America's Army game booth in St. Louis in company formation and “sounded off” with the chant, "War is not a game." Their protest was part of a “truth in recruiting” campaign organized by Iraqi Veterans Against the War.1 ar-themed video games, a significant sector of the interactive enter- tainment industry, command attention because of the variety of pro- vocative issues raised by the history of their development and the W trajectory of their uses.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines rhetorics of heroism and immortality as they are negotiated through a variety of (new) media contexts. The dissertation demonstrates that media technologies in general, and videogames in particular, serve an existential or “death denying” function, which insulates individuals from the terror of mortality. The dissertation also discusses the hero as a rhetorical trope, and suggests that its relationship with immortality makes it a particularly powerful persuasive device. Chapter one provides a historical overview of the hero figure and its relationship with immortality, particularly within the context of ancient Greece. Chapter two examines the material means by which media technologies serve a death denying function, via “symbolic immortality” (inscription), and the McLuhanian concept of extension. Chapter three examines the prevalence of the hero and villain figures in propaganda, with particular attention paid to the use of visual propaganda in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Chapter four situates the videogame as an inherently heroic, death denying medium; videogames can extend the player’s sense of self, provide quantifiable victory criteria, and allow players to participate in “heroic” events.

    Answering the Call of Duty: The popular geopolitics of military-themed videogames Daniel Bos A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University December 2015 Abstract This research is based on a detailed empirical case study of the popular videogame series Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Drawing primarily on the field of popular geopolitics, the analysis reveals how imaginations of global politics are represented, consumed and enacted through the virtual worlds of the Modern Warfare series. In noting the fixation within popular geopolitics on representation and discourse, however, I argue that popular geopolitics needs to attend to the complex relationships between text, audience, and production, what I define as popular geopolitics 3.0. This approach directly responds to calls to examine the connections between popular geopolitics and everyday life, whilst maintaining an understanding of the importance of analysing the visual and discursive ways in which dominant geopolitical imaginaries are constructed and articulated. The thesis proceeds in three sections. First, by focusing on the videogames themselves I demonstrate the ways the virtual landscapes mirror and reflect contemporary geopolitics and the geographies of military violence. The research thesis reveals the techniques and specificities of the Modern Warfare series, in articulating geopolitical discourses. Second, the thesis adopts a ‘player-based’ approach which explores the often prosaic ways in which these geopolitical and militaristic virtual worlds are interacted with, understood, and experienced. I draw on in-depth qualitative data, including interviews and video ethnography, and show how cultural and (geo) political attitudes, subjectivities, and identities are shaped through the act of playing Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can be pre-downloaded onto both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ahead of the game’s worldwide release next week. Unlike previous years, Modern Warfare is split into several additional packs. These packs can be downloaded individually or all at once. Players can pre-load multiplayer, campaign, and Spec-Ops ahead of the full release. PS4 players will receive an additional pack for Survival mode. This is the PS4-exclusive game mode inside of Spec-Ops. The first time Xbox One or PC players can play Survival mode will be in October 2020, which led to some fans canceling their pre-orders. The game’s file size is 137.66 GB on Xbox One. The PC version is 175 GB, but the size is expected to be smaller at launch. The PS4 version is expected to be large since it has an exclusive game mode. Fans will be excited to finally drop in to Modern Warfare upon its release. The game will feature the three modes synonymous with the Modern Warfare franchise—campaign, multiplayer, and Spec-Ops. The campaign is set to follow the story of Captain Price, the British soldier who was the only remaining member of the “Bravo Team” at the end of Modern Warfare 3 . But iconic characters are set to return, such as Captain John “Soap” MacTavish. Upon completion of each download, Modern Warfare will be playable worldwide on Oct.
