EVELYN GREY SMITH An Inventory of Her Paper s in The Library of the University of British Columbi a Special Collections Divisio n Prepared by Scott A . Griffin July, 1979 TABLE OF CONTENT S Introduction Inventory Serie s Letters : incoming 1 Letters : outgoing 3 Letters : other 6 Articles 6 Speeches 8 Notes 10 Emphemera 11 Subject File s Printed Materia l Miscellaneou s Subgroups : CCF Frank Robert s Socialist Party of Canad a EVELYN GREY SMITH While knowledge .of Evelyn Grey Smith's early years is limited ibp .j 1904) she claims distinguished ancestors including Earl Charles Gre y (an important figure who aided Lord John Russell with the 1832 Reform Act) and Lord Grey of Fallodon (a wartime Foreign Secretary of Great Britain and Governor - General of Canada .) Evelyn's marriage to Don Smith in the late 1930's found her becoming increasingly active in the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation . She lived most of her life in Vancouver . She joined' the CCF in Kamloops in 1933. Among her activities she took part in Camp Woodsworth, the CC1 summer camp near Nanaimo . During the I940's and early 1950' s she was an active member of the Stanley Park CCF Club . It was often her task to organize speakers for the Stanley Park Club Forum . She attended many conventions as a delegate from this club . Besides writing articles for submission to various publications , Evelyn wrote columns and book reviews for the'CCF`News on behalf of the Educatio n Committee . A lover of socialist books and material, she found her niche in the Literature Committee . Her enthusiastic work with literature, however, led he r into many conflict situations with others in the CCF, eventually-coming to a head at the 1950 National Convention (see "Literature Incident") . Evelyn was never pleased with what she preceived as the reformist drift of the CCF . She maintained that socialist education was the necessary key to real change . It was in the summer of 1950, just after the Nationa l Convention, that similar-minded people within the CCF held the Left-Wing Conference . Out of this meeting came the Socialist Caucus, later known as the Socialis t Fellowship . This group of left-wing members of the CCF, which contained some notables, met regularly . They published their own publications, Socialist Though t and-Materialsfor Thought, which contained articles on socialist subjects and philosophy . Eve was active in writing articles for them . Companion groups were to be found in Trail, Nanaimo, Victoria and Ontario (the Ginger Group) . However, in April of 1951, after about eight months , the Socialist Fellowship was forced to dissolve . The CCF Executive ruled that it was a defacto party within the CCF, and thus contrary to the CCF constitution . Frustrated with the CCF, Evelyn became involved with the Socialis t Party of Canada, joining in 1953 . Her efforts were no doubt a boon to the struggling Vancouver local . She persrgaailr-werked with Frank Roberts and Matthew Glenday , one-time CCF candidates in Vancouver Centre . Their correspondence and persona l papers are found in the collection . She worked very hard for what she believed in . Both her friends and her opponents undoubtably thought that her energy was endless . The root o f her philosophic activities can be found in one of her favourite statements : "Criticism is something you can avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing, an d being nothing" . The papers are arranged by series with some sub-groups . Included are many articles by people other than Evelyn Grey Smith . iv NAME INDE X Ahrens, J .F . 30 Alsbury, A .T . 18,23 Archilbald, Harry 1, 3 Bacchus, Margaret E . 1,3,4,24 Burton, Audrey (Steve) 1,3,4,24,25,2 6 Calmac CCYM Club 22 Cameron, Colin 1,3,8,23,24,25, 26 , 27 Camp Woodsworth 22 Campbell, May 24,25,26,27 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation 3 :11 Canadian Forum 3 Canter, Irving 1,5,30 Coldwell, M .J . 1,6,9,20 11 Collingwood - CCYM Club n 9 Communist Party of - a 11-13 Cooperative Commonwealth Federatio n 3,4 '7,8,9,10, 1 7,18,19,20,21,22 , `,27,28,29 Cooperative Commonwealth Youth Movement - 22 Devlin, Terr y Gargrave, Tony 1 Glenday, d ' 8,24 Gloss, George 1 Healy, G . 1,24,25,26 Holtby, Harold 28,30 Ingle, Lorne 1, 4 Jenkins, (L 1,30 Kerr, Madelan 1,4,24 Ku Klux Klan 14 Labor Progressive Party 11,12,16,18,21 Lefeaux, Wallis W . 1,9,27 Lewis, David 6,27 Loosemore, Bob 27 MacDonald, Donald 23,24,27 Maclnnis, Angus 1,4, 9 MacNeil, Gran t McKenzie, Frank J . 18,23,24 McLeod , Mildred 1,4,25,26 v McNair, John 1,3, 4 Mendels, Jessie 2,4,24,25,26,27 Milne, J . 2,5,30 Morrison, Myrtle 6,25,26 Nimsick, Leo 25 Population - Japanese - Canadians - B .C . 4,21 Revolutionary Communist Party 15 Revolutionary Workers' Party 15 Roberts, Frank 10,29 Rosenthal, Joyce 25,26 Socialist Fellowship 8,10,23,24,25,26,27 Socialist Party of Canada 5,17,28,30 Socialist Party of Canada, Vancouver Local 30 Socialist Workers' Party 15 Sommers, Robert 16 Smith, Don 15,23 Sncsell, Jack 24 Stanley Park CCF Club 11,27,28 Stephens, A .M . 3,8,18,2 3 Strac2. 3ob 27,28 Stupich, Dave 2 ,27,28 Telford, Lyl e Turner, A .J . 6,24,27,28 U .B .C .
