Norfolk Moth Survey c/o Natural History Dept., Castle Museum, Norwich, NR1 3JU Newsletter No.82 November 2012 INTRODUCTION It has been, as they say, a funny old year. Anyone hoping for an upturn in mothing fortunes following the topsy-turvy summer of 2011 was likely to have been disappointed. In fact, I don’t think I can recall any other year since NMS started in 1985, when so many of our planned field meetings have succumbed to adverse weather conditions. Lynford was postponed, Brettenham was a non-event, and our joint meeting with the Suffolk Moth Group for National Moth Night was cancelled. One suggestion resulting from all this is that in future we should encourage everyone to check information on the website on the day of the event if conditions are likely to be unfavourable. Hopefully that may prevent un-necessary journeys from being undertaken. Having said all that, the remaining field trips were fairly successful, and reports on them are included in this newsletter. As always, we are grateful to all of you who have supported these events in any way. Given the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that migrant species were also relatively sparse in appearance this year. Dave Hipperson has compiled the usual list of records received so far. If you have any outstanding migrant records, do please send them in as an additional list will be included in the newsletter next spring. One of the more exciting migrants that did turn up was a new county record in the form of the pyrale Sclerocona acutellus, the so-called Thatch Pearl.

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Keywords: fauna, lepidoptera, biodiversity, vagamon, Western Ghats, Kerala 1. Introduction Ghats stretches from 8° N to 22° N. Due to increasing Arthropods are considered as the most successful animal anthropogenic activities the montane grasslands and adjacent group which consists of more than two-third of all animal forests face several threats (Pramod et al. 1997) [20]. With a species on earth. Class Insecta comprise about 90% of tropical wide array of bioclimatic and topographic conditions, the forest biomass (Fatimah & Catherine 2002) [10].

Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 37–52, 2021, Zagreb. From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, 1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biok- ovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previ- ous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list. Infection was confirmed by tissue polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis. Results showed that dead H. peltigera larvae contain Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus. Thus, the isolate was named as HearNPV-TR. Microscopy studies indicated that occlusion bodies were 0.73 to 1.66 μm in diameter. The nucleocapsids are approximately 184 × 41 nm in size. The genome of HearNPV-TR was digested with KpnI and XhoI enzymes and calculated as 130.5 kb. Phylogenetic analysis showed that HearNPV-TR has close relation with the H. armigera SNPV-1073 China isolate. The Kimura analysis confirmed that the isolate is a variant of H. armigera NPV. Bioassays were performed using six different concentrations (1 × 310 to 1 × 8 10 occlusion bodies (OBs)/mL)on 2nd instar larvae of H. peltigera, H. armigera, Heliothis viriplaca, Heliothis nubigera. LC50 values were calculated to be 9.5 × 103, 1.9 × 104, 8.6 × 104 and 9.2 × 104 OBs/mL within 14 days, respectively. Results showed that it is a promising biocontrol agent against Heliothinae species.
