Deerhunter / Halcyon Digest Deerhunter / Halcyon Digest El grupo se consagra con un magnífico cuarto álbum, si es que necesitaba algún tipo de confirmación. Dice Bradford Cox que el título de su nuevo álbum es una referencia a un conjunto de recuerdos reales e inventados, al modo en que escribimos y re-escribimos en nuestra cabeza lo que recordarmos para terminar siendo “una versión resumida” de lo que queremos recordar. “Es triste”, concluye. ‘Halcyon Digest’ contiene por tanto bastante decepción desde su observación de la realidad, algo que se manifiesta en letras y melodías, pero al menos podemos decir que, en lo musical, sí es un compendio más perfecto que idílico de muchas de las mejores cosas que han pasado en los últimos 60 años. ‘Microcastle ‘ contenía infinitas referencias al indie de toda naturaleza y en este álbum Bradford Cox ha querido hacer un homenaje al art-rock de los 70 y los 80 con el que ha crecido. Aunque ninguno domina claramente como influencia mayor, cita en concreto a B-52 ′s, Lou Reed o XTC. Las guitarras de ‘Memory Boy’ se mueven más bien cerca de los Smiths, los Pixies o los grupos de la C-86 y Sonic Youth parecen asomarse de vez en cuando mientras ‘ Revival ‘ podría haber sido por melodía un himno de brit-pop o un single de Beck. El guitarrista Lockett Pundt, que tiene un proyecto paralelo llamado Lotus Plaza, demuestra en ‘Desire Lines’, que encantará a Arcade Fire, que sabe perfectamente de qué va la cosa, cuando se desahoga en cuatro intensísimos minutos finales instrumentales. ‘Halcyon Digest’ brilla también en sus referencias a los años 50. Es a lo que suena la estupenda ‘Don’t Cry’, tan cerca del noise como de esta década, o ‘Basement Scene’, una de las canciones destacadas. Su principio recuerda a ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream’, el tema popularizado por Everly Brothers, y su temática, que no distingue realidad de sueño, parece primordial en el álbum, junto a la amistad, casando a la perfección con la última pista del tracklist, ‘He Would Have Laughed’, dedicada a Jay Reatard , que murió mientras dormía. El sonido es por eso onírico, sucio y lo-fi incluso cuando se incorporan vientos, como es el caso de ‘Colorado’, aunque se nota especialmente en el final de ‘Helicopter ‘ que Ben Allen (colaborador de Animal Collective) ha realizado la mezcla y ha aportado ideas. Al final, por una razón diferente, todas las canciones, desde la densidad hipnótica de ‘Earthquake’ a la fantástica guitarra de ‘Helicopter’, pasando por ‘Fountain Stairs’, que huele a clásico por todas partes (la podían haber cantado la Velvet perfectamente), alcanzan la categoría de épico sin estridencias. Deerhunter no dejan tras ‘Halcyon Digest’ ningún lugar a dudas sobre el importante lugar que ocupan en el indie internacional, capaces de crear imágenes tan desasosegantes como ‘Helicopter’ (“coge mi mano y reza por mí / mis últimos días en compañía / el diablo viene a por mí / y los helicópteros rodean la escena”) y sobre todo una colección de canciones entre las que cuesta mucho escoger favoritas. Holley’s music, like his art, defies classification — haunting vocals, keyboards, and new renditions of songs with every performance. He has collaborated with musicians such as Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, Bill Callahan, and Bon Iver. Holley’s medium is the moment. On Saturday, December 2, at 8pm, he’s here with a new band, playing new arrangements and new songs: you’ll only hear it once. Currently featured in the exhibition Thumbs Up For the Mothership, Alabama-born artist Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity since 1979. Born in 1950 as the 7th of 27 children, his art and music came out of struggle, hardship, and, perhaps most importantly, furious curiosity and biological necessity. His art has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound. Self-taught, he started carving sculptures from discarded sandstone when he was 29, eventually broadening his material to anything and everything, often collected on long rambling walks. These objects, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor, combine into narrative pieces that commemorate places, people, and events, often delving into issues of ecology and social justice. His sculptures exist almost as three-dimensional sketches for ideas and stories, influencing the songs he writes. Similar to the spontaneous nature of his sculptures, Holley’s music is somewhere between — and perhaps beyond — Sun Ra and spoken-word poetry.
