Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling
13. Chasing Wild Space Narrative Outsides and World-Building Frontiers in Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic Cody Mejeur As introduced in the iconic line that precedes the first film’s opening crawl, Star Wars’s galaxy far, far away is the foundation for the franchise’s world- building efforts. It is the backdrop and context for the story told by any Star Wars film, novel, game, or other text,1 and as such it functions as a narrative world or storyworld. David Herman describes a storyworld as the “mental model” of the larger world of a text, one that audiences construct from “textual cues and the inferences that they make possible.”2 In other words, the Star Wars galaxy is only partially represented by any particular text, and audiences use that partial representation to imagine how the rest of the galaxy works. However, it seems strange to call the Star Wars galaxy, itself an agglomeration of inconsistent and contested narratives, characters, and worlds, a singular storyworld. Marie-Laure Ryan’s recent conception of the narrative universe as an accumulation of storyworlds seems more apt.3 This chapter therefore explores the space of the Star Wars galaxy as a narrative universe, arguing that it renews itself and its transmedial franchise through the mystery of outside spaces. The use of these outside spaces in Star Wars suggests a new modification or addition to existing theories of narrative world-building, and draws critical attention to the ethical and political dimensions of world-building processes. A narrative universe relies on the creation of narrative space, including a dynamic process of expanding and exploring that space. -

Virtual Cards
The SWCCG Player's Committee presents Virtual Cards Virtual Set #2 To use these cards, simply print them out and cut out the area beneath the card title, and place the cutout in a sleeve with the original card. We recommend using opaque sleeves for non-objective cards. If you use clear sleeves, the cutout must be attached to the original card using tape or some other adhesive so the cutout does not slide. The adhesive must not be visible and must not noticably increase the thickness of the card, if it does, the tournament director may interpret that as cheating and penalize you appropriately. P X. OLCA Committee
The Oceania Laser Class Association OLCA and its Committee Preamble The Laser is what other Classes inspire to be, with a strong Local, District, National, Regional, through to a World organisation. In November 2016 the International Laser Class Association ILCA made the decision to split Oceania from Asia. This aligns ILCA Regions with the International Olympic Committee’s IOC’s Continental Regions represented as the five rings on the Olympic logo. In the future OLCA will develop an events calendar and quality of events to rival any Region in the Laser World. As we develop into the future we plan to become the Region of choice for many ILCA World Championships. If the Oceania Laser Class Association is as successful as I think it can be we can add another 15 countries to the current 118 affiliated with ILCA. Every team member has the skills needed for the business of OLCA to be successful. I am honoured to be one of the Team. The Brief To undertake the responsibility to assemble a Team of hard working experienced Sailing administrators with a passion for the Laser Class not only as administrators but active Laser Sailors with strong connection to their local Laser sailing community at club, District and International level. The Committee Chair Ken Hurling OAM Queensland Australia As Chairman Designate I was asked by the ILCA to establish the Oceania Laser Class Association OLCA. Subsequently I was elected as Chairman at the inaugural OLCA Annual General Meeting in Mooloolaba Qld in February 2018. I am a retired country butcher and feed lot operator. -

Page 22 Survival Horrality: Analysis of a Videogame Genre (1) Ewan Kirkland Introduction The title of this article is drawn from Philip Brophy’s 1983 essay which coins the neologism ‘horrality’, a merging of horror, textuality, morality and hilarity. Like Brophy’s original did of 1980s horror cinema, this article examines characteristics of survival horror videogames, seeking to illustrate the relationship between ‘new’ (media) horror and ‘old’ (media) horror. Brophy’s term structures this investigation around key issues and aspects of survival horror videogames. Horror relates to generic parallels with similarlylabelled film and literature, including gothic fiction, American horror cinema and traditional Japanese culture. Textuality examines the aesthetic qualities of survival horror, including the games’ use of narrative, their visual design and structuring of virtual spaces. Morality explores the genre’s ideological characteristics, the nature of survival horror violence, the familial politics of these texts, and their reflection on issues of institutional and bodily control. Hilarity refers to moments of humour and self reflexivity, leading to consideration of survival horror’s preoccupation with issues of vision, identification, and the nature of the videogame medium. ‘Survival horror’ as a game category is unusual for its prominence within videogame scholarship. Indicative of the amorphous nature of popular genres, Aphra Kerr notes: ‘game genres are poorly defined and evolve as new technologies and fashions emerge’;(2) an observation which applied as much to videogame academia as to the videogame industry. Within studies of the medium, various game types are commonly listed. These might include the shoot‘emup, the racing game, the platform game, the God game, the realtime strategy game, and the puzzle game,(3) the simulation, roleplaying, fighting/action, sports, traditional and ‘”edutainment”’ game,(4) or action, adventure, strategy and ‘processorientated’ games.(5) These clusters of game types tend to be broad, commonsensical, and undertheorized. -

How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Education by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 © Copyright by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students by Fang-Tzu Hsu Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Carlos A. Torres, Chair Education knows no boundaries but hot button topics, like comic books, demonstrate school, teacher and parent limitations. Japanese comic books (manga) are a litmus test of pedagogical tolerance. Because they play an important role in the lives of most Taiwanese teenagers, I give them pride of place in this dissertation. To understand Japanese comic books and their influence, I use Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy to combine perspectives from cultural studies, comparative education, and educational sociology. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and students of a Taiwanese junior high school, I used surveys, a textual analysis of five student-selected titles and interviews with students and educators. I discovered that Japanese manga contain complex and sometimes contradictory ideologies of ethnicity, gender, class, and violence. From an ethnic perspective, although students may glean cultural content from manga heroes and their retinues, people of color and non-Japanese Asians are either caricatures or non-existent; although Taiwanese teenager readers seem unaware of this. From a gender standpoint, neither the female characters’ provocative representation nor the male characters’ slavering responses to it raise students’ and teachers’ concerns. -
