Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Sunday Readings are from Year B in the Lectionary . The Weekday Readings are from Year 1.

We are accredited by the Fairtrade Foundation as a Fairtrade Parish

From Fr Sabu…

This week’s Scripture readings give us a strong warning against jealousy, intolerance and giving scandal. In the first reading, we find jealousy, in its destructive form of envy, raising its ugly head in Moses’ assistant and successor, Joshua. Moses and seventy future helpers were called by the Lord God to the Tent of Meeting for the Spirit-giving Ordination ceremony. But two of the invitees were absent, and Joshua could not tolerate these absent men prophesying in the camp without receiving God’s Spirit in the Tent of Meeting. Moses had to instruct Joshua to be tolerant. This selection is intended to provide a Biblical background for Jesus’ response to the same kind of jealousy apparent in the apostles.

In the second reading, James warns the rich against giving scandal by their denial of social justice to their workers in refusing to give them a living wage, by ignoring the needs of others, and by condemning and murdering the innocent and the righteous. Withholding a day-labourer’s wage was a terrible act of injustice, tantamount to murder in the agricultural economy of the ancient

Middle East. Baptism commits every Christian to work for social justice through peaceable, rather than violent, means.

In the Gospel, we find intolerance among the apostles of Christ. John complains to Jesus that a man outside their group of selected disciples has been exorcising demons in Jesus’ Name, despite their attempt to prevent him from doing so. Jesus responds by giving the apostles lessons in Jesus’ own kind of tolerance and in the reward to be given to outsiders for good deeds they have done for the apostles because they are the disciples of Jesus. We also hear the strong warning of Jesus against giving scandal, especially to innocent children, to vulnerable members of the community, and to beginners in the Faith. Jesus instructs the apostles, and us, that, just as a doctor might remove by surgery a limb or some part of the body to preserve the life of the whole body, so we must be ready to part with anything that causes us or others to sin and which leads to spiritual death.

Let us avoid conduct that can lead to giving scandal and let us learn the Christian virtue of tolerance. May God bless us all. The Parish Office is located at Holy Trinity and is open Easily find us online

Thank you for your support which helps the BCCS carry out their work with children and their families at this difficult and stressful time.

How to make a financial contribution to the parish – We now have a number of cashless donation systems in place to make it safer and easier to make a financial contribution to the parish:

• The best way is to set up a Standing Order with your bank. There is a form on the parish website you can either print off, fill in and take to your bank or use to get the parish bank account details and set up a Standing Order on your bank’s website or app. • After Mass you can use your bank card or smartphone/watch to make a donation using our card machine. Just ask a Steward on your way out. • Go to the parish live-stream page via the parish website and use the donation button. • Download a QR Code reader to your smartphone and scan the QR codes located by the wooden collection box. This will take you to a website where you can use Apple Pay, Google Pay or input your bank card details. There are eight QR codes to choose from giving you an option of £3, £5, £10 or £20 and the option to Gift-Aid your donation if you are a UK Taxpayer.

PLEASE ONLY USE CASH, ESPECIALLY COINS, IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO USE ANY OF THE CASHLESS SYSTEMS ABOVE, AS THE BANK HAS MADE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO PAY THIS IN.

Gift Aid – From now on you will find Donation Envelopes on your seats. Please only use these envelopes to make a donation to the parish – please see the notice below for details of how to offer a Mass Intention. In order to use them efficiently, please do one of the following options:

• If you are a Gift-Aider, i.e., if you normally make a donation using Gift Aid envelopes, simply write your Gift Aid number where it says ‘Envelope No’ and place the envelope with your donation inside in the wooden collection box in church. • If you are not a Gift Aider, but you are a UK taxpayer, please complete all the information on the envelope and tick the Gift Aid box so that your donation can be Gift Aided and we can contact you about becoming a Gift Aider, then place the envelope with your donation inside in the wooden collection box in church. • If you are not a UK taxpayer, please do not use the envelope at all, simply place a cash donation in the wooden collection box in church or use one of our electronic donation platforms such as card donations, Standing Order or via the parish website.

Mass Intentions – These are currently quite booked up. If you would like to offer a Mass, please use an ordinary envelope writing the intention you would like offered, the church you would like it offered at and when you would like it offered with your name and phone number. If you are able to place a donation inside the envelope as well we would be very grateful, but it isn’t mandatory so don’t worry if you can’t. Place the envelope in the wooden collection box in church next time you come to Mass.

Food Bank – We will only be collecting at St Basil’s and St Therese so please bring your donations of non-perishable food as usual and they will be collected safely and delivered to our local food banks.

God our Father, creator of the world, almighty and merciful, out of love for us you sent your Son into the world as the Doctor of our souls and our bodies, look upon your children who, in this difficult time of confusion and dismay in many regions of Europe and the world, turn to you seeking strength, salvation and relief, deliver us from illness and fear, heal our sick, comfort their families, give wisdom to our rulers, energy and reward to our doctors, nurses and volunteers, eternal life to the dead.

Do not abandon us in the moment of trial but deliver us from all evil.

We ask this of you, who with the Son and the Holy Spirit, live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Mary, Mother of health and hope; pray for us!

Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen
