You could ask me about any of them and I could come up with at least one occurrence that captured the spirit of the night. But not every live show has been truly ‘special’. I’ve seen excellent performances by bands with crowds numbering in their thousands that were simply ‘very good nights out’. No more, no less. No, it’s those gigs that leave you buzzing all the way home that count, the ones where you really felt part of something special and years later, need only think of that occasion to be right back there, in soul if not in body. Sometimes the whole gig doesn’t have to be brilliant, a single ‘magic moment’ is all you need. And it’s those events that have kept me coming back for more. Most people just settle for a few favourites and watch them every time they come round. I’m not like that. I’ve rolled the dice on catching relatively unknown bands plenty of times (especially at festivals). You never know what you might discover. It doesn’t always work. I’ve had my share of dead nights, shitty soundsystems and line-ups that seem to shift every time you look at them.

This began the annual gathering known as the International Steampunk Symposium! Founded in 2012, the International Steampunk Symposium is one of the longest running Steampunk festivals in the world. On a mission for the promotion and preservation of all things Steampunk, the Symposium plays a vital part in its dedication to the Steampunk Community. Additionally, it’s a jolly good time where you are likely to find several friends whom you have yet to meet! Our theme for 2017 is celebrating “30 Years of Steampunk” with author K.W. Jeter who coined the phrase in April 1987. This weekend’s convention presents the timeline of how our favorite fandom has evolved from a literary sub- genre into a full fledged community. Symposium Safety Policies International Steampunk Symposium wants everyone to have a fun, enjoyable and entertaining event, so please follow these sensible guidelines: 1. You must wear your 2017 Symposium badge or wristband at all times to be admitted to any convention function; lost badges or wristbands can not be replaced. 2. All attendees must abide by the Symposium Safety Policy against harassment. 3. Possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under 21 years of age is grounds for expulsion from the convention without refund.
