Brno Studies in English Volume 39, No. 2, 2013 ISSN 0524-6881 DOI: 10.5817/BSE2013-2-8 ANDRÉ LOISELLE CANADIAN HORROR, AMERICAN BODIES: CORPOREAL OBSESSION AND CULTURAL PROJECTION IN AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, AMERICAN PSYCHO, AND AMERICAN MARY Abstract Many Canadian horror films are set in the United States and claim to provide a graphic critique of typically American social problems. Using three made-in- -Canada films that explicitly situate themselves “south of the border,” – Ame- rican Nightmare“ (1983, Don McBrearty), “American Psycho” (2000, Mary Harron), and “American Mary” (2012, Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska) – this essay argues that these and other similar cinematic tales of terror have less to do with America than with Canada’s own national anxieties. These films project Ca- nadian fears onto the United States to avoid facing our national implication in horror, mayhem and chaos; and more often than not, the body is the preferred site of such projection. In this way, such films unwittingly expose Canada’s dark obsessions through cultural displacement. Ultimately, this article suggest that Canadians have a long way to go before they can stop blaming the American monster for everything bad that happens to them, and finally dare to embrace their own demons. Key words Canadian horror films; the body as site of terror; Imaginary Canadian; Cana- da-US relationship; Toronto and Vancouver masquerading as American cities Canadian comedian Martin Short was once asked by American late-night TV show host David Letterman what is the difference between the inhabitants of the two neighboring nations. In what is probably the most accurately pithy answer to this eternal question, Short wittily replied, “Americans watch TV, Canadians watch American TV” (Pevere 1998: 10).

Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

  • Press Kit Falling Angels
Falling Angels A film by Scott Smith Based on the novel by Barbara Gowdy With Miranda Richardson Callum Keith Rennie Katherine Isabelle RT : 101 minutes 1 Short Synopsis It is 1969 and seventeen year old Lou Field and her sisters are ready for change. Tired of enduring kiddie games to humour a Dad desperate for the occasional shred of family normalcy, the Field house is a place where their Mom’s semi-catatonic state is the result of a tragic event years before they were born. But as the autumn unfolds, life is about to take a turn. This is the year that Lou and her sisters are torn between the lure of the world outside and the claustrophobic world of the Field house that can no longer contain the girls’ restless adolescence. A story of a calamitous family trying to function, Falling Angels is a story populated by beautiful youthful rebels and ill-equipped parents coping with the draw of a world in turmoil beyond the boundaries of home and a manicured lawn. 2 Long Synopsis Treading the fine line between adolescence and adulthood, the Field sisters have all but declared war on their domineering father. Though Jim Field (Genie and Gemini winner Callum Keith Rennie ) runs the family house like a military camp, it’s the three teenaged daughters who really run the show and baby-sit their fragile mother Mary, (Two-time Oscar ® nominee Miranda Richardson) as she quietly sits on the couch and quells her anxiety with whiskey. It’s 1969 and beneath suburbia’s veneer of manicured lawns and rows of bungalows, the world faces explosive social change.

  • ASC History Timeline 1919-2019
American Society of Cinematographers Historical Timeline DRAFT 8/31/2018 Compiled by David E. Williams February, 1913 — The Cinema Camera Club of New York and the Static Camera Club of America in Hollywood are organized. Each consists of cinematographers who shared ideas about advancing the art and craft of moviemaking. By 1916, the two organizations exchange membership reciprocity. They both disband in February of 1918, after five years of struggle. January 8, 1919 — The American Society of Cinematographers is chartered by the state of California. Founded by 15 members, it is dedicated to “advancing the art through artistry and technological progress … to help perpetuate what has become the most important medium the world has known.” Members of the ASC subsequently play a seminal role in virtually every technological advance that has affects the art of telling stories with moving images. June 20, 1920 — The first documented appearance of the “ASC” credential for a cinematographer in a theatrical film’s titles is the silent western Sand, produced by and starring William S. Hart and shot by Joe August, ASC. November 1, 1920 — The first issue of American Cinematographer magazine is published. Volume One, #1, consists of four pages and mostly reports news and assignments of ASC members. It is published twice monthly. 1922 — Guided by ASC members, Kodak introduced panchromatic film, which “sees” all of the colors of the rainbow, and recorded images’ subtly nuanced shades of gray, ranging from the darkest black to the purest white. The Headless Horseman is the first motion picture shot with the new negative. The cinematographer is Ned Van Buren, ASC.

In this year’s programme too many of the monsters will smile when they meet you, and will still be smiling when they lock you in a meat freezer. Or encourage you onto a ledge. Or offer to share their martini. You could try politely declining their kind offer, see how that works out... Dead by Dawn is a discovery festival which exists to showcase potential and vibrant emerging talent, but also aims to screen the widest possible range of what can be described as horror both in feature and short form.
