“30 Years of ” April 28th-30th, 2017 Cincinnati Steampunk Salon First Saturday of the Month - 8PM+

112 E 4th St, Covington, 41011 www.MollyMalonesIrishPub.com Covington, Kentucky Welcome to the Symposium

More than half a decade ago, dozens of airship crews from all across the state, the nation, and even the globe converged in Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the first ever Steampunk Olympics. This began the annual gathering known as the International Steampunk Symposium!

Founded in 2012, the International Steampunk Symposium is one of the longest running Steampunk festivals in the world. On a mission for the promotion and preservation of all things Steampunk, the Symposium plays a vital part in its dedication to the Steampunk Community. Additionally, it’s a jolly good time where you are likely to find several friends whom you have yet to meet!

Our theme for 2017 is celebrating “30 Years of Steampunk” with author K.W. Jeter who coined the phrase in April 1987. This weekend’s convention presents the timeline of how our favorite fandom has evolved from a literary sub- genre into a full fledged community. Symposium Safety Policies

International Steampunk Symposium wants everyone to have a fun, enjoyable and entertaining event, so please follow these sensible guidelines:

1. You must wear your 2017 Symposium badge or wristband at all times to be admitted to any convention function; lost badges or wristbands can not be replaced. 2. All attendees must abide by the Symposium Safety Policy against harassment. 3. Possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under 21 years of age is grounds for expulsion from the convention without refund. 4. Keep all behavior considered publicly offensive in your hotel rooms. 5. Check all weapons at Registration for peacebinding; realistic replica firearms are not permitted.

We reserve the right to ask you to leave the convention and refuse to refund your ticket if you are violating Symposium safety policies.

Please Note . . .

Announced events and guests are subject to change and/or cancellation without notice. Every effort will be made to announce any changes via SteampunkSymposium.com and pre-convention publications but sometimes last-minute changes will occur.

International Steampunk Symposium LLC and affiliates are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property, or for injuries sustained during the course of the convention.

Harassment of convention members online or in electronic venues will be treated as seriously as physical harassment. Making any member of the public feel unwelcome at the International Steampunk Symposium is also considered harassment.

If a person engages in harassing behavior the International Steampunk Symposium (ISS) staff will take prompt action in any form they deem appropriate, including expulsion from ISS with no refund and may result in expulsion and/or long term suspension of your eligibility for ISS membership.

Anyone can report harassment. If someone’s behavior has made you uncomfortable you should immediately contact a member of ISS staff, security team, email noharm@ thepandorasociety.com. Her debut novel was Chenda and the Airship Brofman, and since then she has penned other Steampunk novels and a series of children’s Steampunk books. Special Guests Aurelio Voltaire’s music can best be described as a collection of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre, with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star Wars to keep a convention audience rolling in the aisles. Many know him for his songs “Brains!” and “Land of the Dead” from the show The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy. Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands has an eclectic, haunting yet whimsical, carnivalesque world folk sound, dubbed “kaleidophrenic cabaret.” Crystal plays accordion, musical saw, concertina, piano, Taiko drum, adungu (Ugandan harp), and various others, leaving people captivated with her operatic and soulful vocals and virtuosic command of her exotic instruments. cincinnati comic expo September 22-24 • DUKE ENERGY CENTER www.cincinnaticomicexpo.com tickets on sale now! Steampunk Olympics & Charity Since the first year of the Symposium, the Steampunk Olympics has been the central event. In the past it has also been known as the Imperial Games, and then the Symposium Games, but in essence it has always been the Steampunk Olympics. This year, the Steampunk Olympics begins a new tradition, that of raising money for our charity partner NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness); proceeds from group and individual registration fees for the Steampunk Olympics will go directly to benefit charity. Several airships have already officially registered their entry into the Steampunk Olympics, but the contests are open to anyone capable of competing*, regardless of whether they are affiliated to an airship, or are an independent. To sign up for a contest, simply visit the NAMI table outside of the Carpenter’s Run hall (during vendor hall hours) prior to the contest (give yourself at least an hour) and make your donation of $5 to enter that event. Each game wins points for competing airships, and some win prizes for the winner, but all earn you glory! A full list of the games is posted outside the Blue Ash room, and are listed throughout the schedule in this book. There is also a fundraiser raffle with great prizes at the NAMI table, and 20% of book sales from The Bookshelf is being donated to NAMI. Thank you to Travis Feirtag for designing and creating this year’s Symposium trophy. * Some contests have restrictions due to either age or equipment needed.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.
