Entering our house very late at night, after having taken many precautionary measures, he brought us words of love and comfort as well as relief for families of Christian martyrs. In this 30th anniversary edition of Tortured for Christ, little has been changed. The original testimony of a pastor's fourteen-year imprisonment under a Romanian dictatorship has been left intact. Over the years, Tortured for Christ has been translated into 65 languages and millions of copies have been distributed throughout the world. We are continually amazed at how this testimony has been used of God to strengthen His Body. We have discovered that in this Body, victory, courage, resilience, and tenacity know no borders, no skin color, no nationality, but are given equally to all by the Holy Spirit. -

DIN RAPORTUL FINAL „ANALIZA DICTATURII COMUNISTE DIN ROMÂNIA“ În dorinþa de a oferi cititorilor noºtri – care poate nu ºi-au achiziþionat volumul – posibilitatea sã ia cunoºtinþã de princi- palele aspecte ºi probleme cuprinse în ANALIZA DICTATURII COMUNISTE DIN ROMÂNIA (Raportul final), continuãm în acest numãr al revistei reproducerea celor mai semnificative pasaje din Raportul respectiv. Scopul acestui demers este ca uitarea sã nu se aºtearnã peste ororile pe care regimul comunist, ilegitim ºi cri- minal, le-a pricinuit poporului român de-a lungul anilor de teroare comunistã. Modificarea legislaþiei privitoare la cler Într-o primã fazã, aceea de tranziþie cãtre un regim totalitar (1944-1948), fie cã a fost vorba de Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, Vasile Luca, Emil Bodnãraº, Petru Groza, Petre Constantinescu-Iaºi, cu toþii au avut un rol însemnat în numirea ºi ascensiunea unor responsabili cu politica religioasã, prelaþi, conducãtori de asociaþii preoþeºti ºi a altor elemente supuse sau percepute ca docile. Însã simpla numire în aceste demnitãþi administrative ºi ecleziastice a unor persoane de încredere n-ar fi putut contribui la subordonarea Bisericii dacã nu ar fi fost însoþitã, începând chiar din momentul martie 1945, de un întreg eºafodaj legislativ care sã serveascã interesele conducerii P.C.R. în domeniul relaþiilor dintre stat ºi culte. 90 Politically manipulated emotions and representations of the enemy POLITICALLY MANIPULATED EMOTIONS AND REPRESENTATIONS OF THE ENEMY Adrian SOLOMON1 Abstract Both love and hate can be manipulated to the advantage of power, even when the citizens are subjected to poverty and famine. True or forced love is what dictators seek from their subjects, but situations differ a lot: although Ceauşescu’s authoritarianism was inspired by communist China and North Korea, specific details pertaining to Romanian reality and himself distinguish him from Asian dictators. Totalitarian states also need to foster hate against real or invented enemies, and are adept at selecting the types of enemies and hatred that serve their purposes. Keywords: Orwell, dictatorship, famine, forced love, hatred, enemy. 1. Reality versus dystopia Day after day, media around the world speak of Orwellian states, Big Brother, Newspeak, Thought Police, Doublethink and other fictitious topoi extracted from Nineteen Eighty-Four and presented as naked truths, whether the subject is one of poetic creation or one of public concern: from CCTV surveillance in London and the National Security Agency’s spying on both foreign and its own citizens, to architecture in China and legislation in the UK. Needless to say, most of these alarms are not sounded in authoritarian states. Ever since some European countries fell into the totalitarian grip in the first half of the 20th century, and dystopian authors such as Capek, Zamyatin, Aldous Huxley and Orwell invented their own fictional brands of totalitarianism, an answer has been sought to the haunting question: Can reality be as bad as dystopia? A multitude of answers may indeed be obtained by comparing phenomena from both the material and spiritual life, e.g. -

0ne g Sabina Wurmbrand: Tortured for Christ he guards in the hard-labor camp picked up Sabina Wurmbrand, held her by one T arm and one leg, and heaved her into the rocky canal the women in the prison camp had been working on. She thought she had broken a number of ribs, but since there was no medical care available in the prison, she could not be sure. She had been teaching Bible studies and praying with the women in her dormitory, so the guards wanted to make an example of her. They wanted to show the other women what would happen to them if they kept up their religious activities. Sabina Wurmbrand was imprisoned and tor- tured by the Communists in Romania for her faith in Jesus Christ in the 1950s before the fall of the Communist regime. She was the godly, devoted wife of Pastor Richard Wurmbrand and served with Beyond Suffering: Ten Women Who Overcame him in ministering to the underground church in Romania for years. While her husband was in prison, Sabina orga- nized the women and the few Christians left who were not in prison. She carried on ministry, just as she had worked beside her husband for so many years. The Communists told her that if she would renounce her faith, they would let him go. She re- fused. They then told her that if she would give them names of other Christians, they would set him free. Again, she refused. Richard Wurmbrand spoke warmly and openly about God’s faithfulness to him in prison when he stayed with us in Dallas, Texas, for a week. -

Anton Durcovici în arestul Ministerului de Interne din Bucureşti, pr. prof. Wilhelm Dancă analizează relaţia dintre Biserică şi Stat aşa cum rezultă ea din cele declarate de episcopul de Iaşi, accentuând problematica secularismului şi a secularizării. Intenţia autorului este de a descoperi cum s-a opus episcopul Anton Durcovici la invazia Partidului-Stat în viaţa Bisericii, analizând mai în- tâi modelul sovietic al relaţiei dintre Biserică şi Stat, în care se face deosebirea dintre starea de iure (separarea Bisericii de Stat şi Şcoală) şi starea de facto (presiunile exercitate asupra Bisericii Ortodoxe şi Bisericii Catolice), iar în par- tea a doua aplicarea acestui model la spaţiul românesc potrivit declaraţiilor sale carcerale, din care reiese că cea mai preocupare a regimului comunist în anii 1947 şi 1948 era limitarea prezenţei Bisericii Catolice în viaţa publică. Mrs. Wurmbrand was imprisoned nearly three years also for her Christian faith in same prisons. From an unpublished Bible meditation by late Reverend Richard Wurmbrand: Is there a God? I knew a very, very poor lady who had no living relatives. She boasted having lived all her life in a suburb. No one had ever invited her outside the neighborhood she lived in. Yet, same lady was very keen to get involved in any discussions about various political problems in this world. Since thousands of years there are controversies as to whether God exists and if He is, who is He, how He is and what should our relationship to Him be? None of us has seen the entire earthly globe, much less could we fathom this humongous universe. There is a spiritual universe as well that we hardly could contemplate. Wise Solomon wrote, "(God) has set eternity in the human heart." (Ecclesiastes 3:11) Any discussion of doubts about God just shows the common denominator of humanity: our boundless ignorance. Should we disbelieve His existence since our mind seems not to find him? It would be like doubting the existence of music because we cannot touch it. -

I was walking from our home to my church nearby when a black Ford braked sharply beside me and two men jumped out, seized my arms and shoved me into the back seat, while a third, beside the driver, kept me covered with an automatic. The car sped through the cold, gray streets of Bucharest and turned in through steel gates in Calea Rahova street. My kidnappers belonged to the Communist Secret Police and this was their headquarters. Inside, my papers, my belong ings, my tie and shoelaces, and finally my name were taken from me. "From now on," said the official on duty, "you are Vasile Georgescu." It was a common name, easy to forget. The authorities did not want even the guards to know the identity of their pris oner, in case the secret should leak out and questions be asked abroad, where I was well-known.
