Johansson made her film debut in the 1994 film North and was later nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for her performance in 1996's Manny & Lo. Johansson rose to fame with her roles in 1998's The Horse Whisperer and 2001's Ghost World. She made the transition to adult roles with her performances in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, for which she won a BAFTA Award, and Girl with a Pearl Earring, both of which earned her Golden Globe Award nominations in 2003. A role in A Love Song for Bobby Long earned her a third Golden Globe for Best Actress nomination. Following an appearance in The Island, Johansson garnered a fourth Golden Globe nomination, for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in Woody Allen's Match Point. She followed that with another Allen film, Scoop, with Hugh Jackman. A role in Brian de Palma's film noir The Black Dahlia was followed by a second role opposite Hugh Jackman in The Prestige, also starring Christian Bale. Following a 2007 appearance in The Nanny Diaries, Johansson starred in the 2008 films The Other Boleyn Girl, opposite Natalie Portman and Eric Bana, and the Woody Allen-directed film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Her second album, Break Up, with Pete Yorn was released in September 2009. Early life Johansson was born in New York City. Her father, Karsten Johansson, is a Danish-born architect, and her paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, a producer, comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish family from the Bronx.[2] [3] [4] [5] Johansson's parents met in Denmark, where her mother lived with Johansson's maternal grandmother, Dorothy, a former bookkeeper and schoolteacher.[6] Johansson has an older sister, Vanessa, who is an actress; an older brother, Adrian; a twin brother, Hunter (who appeared in the film Manny Scarlett Johansson 2 [7] [8] & Lo with Scarlett); and an older half-brother, Christian, from her father's first marriage. Johansson grew up in a household with "little money,"[4] and with a mother who was a "film buff."[9] She and her brother, Hunter, attended P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village in elementary school.[10] Johansson began her theater [11] training by attending and graduating from Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 2002. Acting career Early roles Johansson began acting during childhood, after her mother started taking her to auditions.[4] She made her film debut at age nine, as John Ritter's daughter in the 1994 fantasy comedy North.[1] Following minor roles in the 1995 film Just Cause, as the daughter of Sean Connery and Kate Capshaw, and If Lucy Fell in 1996, she played the role of Amanda in Manny & Lo (1996). Her performance in Manny & Lo garnered a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female,[1] and positive reviews, one noting, "[the film] grows on you, largely because of the charm of ... Scarlett Johansson",[12] while San Francisco Chronicle critic Mick LaSalle commented on her "peaceful aura", and wrote, "If she can get through puberty with that aura undisturbed, she could become an important [13] actress." After appearing in minor roles in Fall and Home Alone 3 in 1997, Johansson garnered widespread attention for her performance in the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer, directed by Robert Redford.[1] She received a nomination for the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actress for the film.[14] [15] In 1999, she appeared in both My Brother the Pig and the neo-noir Coen brothers film The Man Who Wasn't There. Also in 1999, she made an appearance in the music video for Mandy Moore's single, "Candy".[16] Although the film was not a box office success,[17] she received praise for her breakout role[18] in the 2001 film, Ghost World.[19] [20] Credited with "sensitivity and talent [that] belie her age",[21] Johansson went on to win the Chlotrudis[22] and Toronto Film Critics Association Awards for Best Supporting Actress[23] and was nominated for the Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actress.[24] In 2002, Johansson appeared in the comedy-horror thriller Eight Legged Freaks, starring David Arquette. Transition to adult roles Scarlett Johansson made the transition from teen roles to adult roles, with two such roles in 2003.[25] In the Sofia Coppola film Lost in Translation, she played Charlotte, an abandoned young wife, opposite Bill Murray.[26] [27] Roger Ebert wrote that he loved the film and described the performances of Johansson and Murray as "wonderful".[28] Entertainment Weekly wrote of Johansson's "embracing, restful serenity",[29] and the New York Times said, "At 18, the actress gets away with playing a 25-year-old woman by using her husky voice to test the level of acidity in the air ... Ms. Johansson is not nearly as accomplished a performer as Mr. Murray, but Ms. Coppola gets around this by using Charlotte's simplicity and curiosity as keys to her character".[30] Johansson won the BAFTA Award[31] and the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress[32] and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress[33] for the role. She received nominations from a number of film critic organizations, including the Broadcast Film Critics Association,[34] the Chicago Film Critics Association,[35] the Phoenix Film [36] [37] Critics Society and the Chlotrudis Awards. Johansson played Griet in Peter Webber's Girl with a Pearl Earring. While noting, "Audiences feel as if they are spying on a moment of artistic inspiration when painter Vermeer creates the title work", USA Today praised her, suggesting, "[She] is having a banner year that Oscar voters should recognize."[38] In his review for the New Yorker, Anthony Lane said, "What keeps Webber‘s movie alive is the tenseness of the setup ... and, above all, the presence of Johansson. She is often wordless and close to plain onscreen, but wait for the ardor with which she can summon a closeup and bloom under its gaze; this is her film, not Vermeer‘s, all the way."[39] Owen Gleiberman, for Entertainment Weekly, wrote of her "nearly silent performance", observing, "The interplay on her face of fear, Scarlett Johansson 3 ignorance, curiosity, and sex is intensely dramatic."[40] She was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama[33] and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.[31] She was also nominated by the London [41] [36] [42] Film Critics' Circle, the Phoenix Film Critics Society and the British Independent Film Awards.

Participants in the study articulate action heroines as visual metaphors for career and academic success and take pleasure in seeing women succeed against adversity. However, they are reluctant to believe that the female bodies onscreen are physically capable of the action they perform when compared with male counterparts—a belief based on post-feminist assumptions of the limits of female physical abilities and the persistent representations of thin action heroines in film. I argue that post-feminist ideology encourages women to imagine action heroines as successful in intellectual arenas; yet, the ideology simultaneously disciplines action heroine bodies to render them unbelievable as physically powerful women.

    10 th TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES WORLD NARRATIVE AND DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION SELECTIONS, AND NEW VIEWPOINTS SECTION *** TRIBECA EXPANDS AWARDS SCOPE *** 2011 Festival to Present 88 Feature-Length and 61 Short Films April 20 – May 1 Plus Free Online Film Screenings for Viewers Nationwide New York, NY [March 7, 2011] – The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by American Express ®, today announced the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections and the first edition of the new section—Viewpoints. Forty-four of the 88 feature-length films were announced. The 10 th edition of the Festival will take place from April 20 to May 1 in lower Manhattan. TFF organizers this year have streamlined the Festival’s format, which is now comprised of two competition sections, World Narrative and World Documentary, and three out-of-competition sections: Cinemania, Spotlight and the new Viewpoints. “It’s our tenth Tribeca Film Festival, and in our relatively brief existence we have evolved dramatically,” says Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “The Festival has become an integral part of the cultural landscape of New York City as well as a globally recognized platform for storytelling.” The 2011 film selection includes feature films from 32 different countries, including 43 World Premieres, 10 International Premieres, 19 North American Premieres, 7 U.S. Premieres and 9 New York Premieres. Ninety-nine directors will be presenting feature works at the Festival, with 54 of these filmmakers presenting their feature directorial debuts. Twelve feature film directors are returning TFF filmmakers. The 2011 film slate was chosen from a total of 5,624 submissions, a record number for the Festival.

    COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies 17.2 (2016) From Pearl Harbor (1941) to Pearl Harbor (2001): On the Emancipatory Potential of Nursing During Wartime and its Representation in Hollywood Film Susanne Bueechl ABSTRACT: This essay examines the representation of the nursing profession in the Hollywood movie Pearl Harbor (2001). As cultural products of their time, films tell us about the social and political conditions in which they were created. In the late 1990s and early 2000s a conservative feminist backlash, which Susan Faludi described as early as 1991 was still impacting the emancipation of women. In its often reactionary portrayal of the women nurses of World War II, Pearl Harbor seems to reflect more the situation of women in the 1990s than doing justice to the role of nurses during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thus, through a cultural studies-informed analysis of the movie and its protagonist Evelyn Johnson, expectations of nurses during World War II will be examined and challenged. KEYWORDS: Pearl Harbor (film); World War II; Nursing; Emancipation; Gender; Feminism Introduction For decades, the discourse on the feminist movement before, during, and after World War II, was dominated by the notion that the war resulted in a backlash which “crippled the appeal and effect of feminism for almost half a century” (LeGates 288). While the war years had a considerable effect on emancipation due to the large incorporation of women into the work force, this development was also not without problems and did not mean that women achieved unequivocal equality. Particularly the years following the war are considered to have had an ebbing effect on women’s emancipation and thus on the achievement of social equality for women (LeGates 374).
