A species can be declared extinct because for an unusual amount of time it has not been seen again; however, in the frame of the climate change it is likely that a supposedly missing species is a lucky survivor not seen because it was not searched for in the correct environment. We used the strictly endemic Leistus punctatis- simus Breit, 1914 (Coleoptera, Carabidae) as the case study for testing the latter hypothesis vs. the type locality approach. On the basis of past unsuccessful searches in the Dolomites (a mountain range in the eastern Alps, Italy) driven by the type locality approach, a study area was selected where climate change may have exerted environmental constraints on endemic species. -

Bilan d’une année de recherches ciblées de Carabiques en Suisse: découverte de Notiophilus quadripunctatus DEJEAN, 1826 et autres captures remarquables (Coleoptera, Carabidae) YANNICK CHITTARO & WERNER MARGGI Résumé De nombreuses espèces de Carabiques rares et menacées ont été recherchées de façon ciblée en Suisse par le premier auteur en 2015. Au total, 345 espèces ont été recensées, uniquement par des méthodes de chasse active (sans utilisation de pièges). Parmi elles, Notiophilus quadripunctatus s’avère être nouvelle pour la faune du pays. Confirmé maintenant par plusieurs captures récentes,Harpalus neglectus doit également être ajouté à la liste des Carabiques de Suisse. Considérés comme disparus, Acupalpus exiguus et Chlaenius olivieri ont été retrouvés, alors qu’Agonum anten- narium, Bembidion elongatum, Bembidion fumigatum, Dicheirotrichus placidus, Patrobus septentrionis et Platynus longiventris n’avaient plus été signalés à l’échelle nationale depuis plus de 20 ans. Quelques autres captures d’intérêt régional complètent ce bilan réjouissant. L’efficacité de la chasse active dans un but de recherche d’espèces rares est discutée. Numerous rare, threatened carabids were the subject of targeted investigations by the first author in 2015. In total, 345 species were recorded, using only active collecting methods (no traps). -

©Gesellschaft für Angewandte Carabidologie e.V. download www.laufkaefer.de Verantwortlichkeit für den Schutz und Raumbedeut- samkeit von Laufkäfern in Deutschland: Taxa welcher Lebensräume Deutschlands sind betroffen?1 Horst Gruttke 1 Gewidmet Prof. Dr. Gerd Müller-Motzfeld Abstract: Responsibility for Conservation and Space Importance of ground beetles in Germany: Taxa of which Habitats are concerned? – Concepts of responsibility and space importance have been combined by Müller-Motzfeld , Trautner and Bräunicke in 2004. Both concepts are linked to the tasks deri- ving from the Rio Convention on Biological Diversity. Responsibility of Germany for the conservation of organisms consist of 2 main categories (“especially high responsible”: “!!” and “highly responsible”: “!”) and 1 category for highly isolated outposts “(!)”. Space importance comprises 3 categories: endemic in Germany (E), central European distribution (rz) and wider European distribution (re). A Swiss approach to derive reasonable threshold levels of areal proportion adequate for assigning national responsibility from a so called “expectation value” for a country and some modifications including propor- tions of “suitable habitat” as reference are discussed. In Germany temperate woodland and flood-plains or estuaries had been originally dominating, comprising together about 10 % of these habitat types in Europe. Among taxa with high conservation responsibility, species of woodlands and humid habitats are dominating as well, but species of meadows and xero-thermic or mountain habitats are listed, too. The distribution of carabid taxa with high space importance is similar but with some significant differences. It comprises more alpine and mountain species, particularly those from block and rubble-slopes. Arguments for a revision of existing lists are presented, Carabus auronitens being an exemplary candidate for integration into the list of taxa for which Germany bears a high conservation responsibility. -

MAKAR.ow* A key to the genera of the Ground-beetle larvae (Coleoptera, Carabidae) of the Palearctic region INTRODUCTION It is necessary to use the data about the preimaginal stages, especially lar vae, forthe successful decision of many taxonomic and ecological questions, but it's rather difficult, because of the little knowledge on the larvae biology and morphology as well as the absence of modern identification keys. So, van Emden's monograph (1942) appears hitherto the most complete generalizing work. The available keys for the USSR (Sharova, 1958, 1964) and Middle Europe carabid larvae (Hurka, 1978; Arndt, 1991) do not contain a number of larval descriptions, published from 1942-1991. Besides, the finemorphologi cal investigations ofY. Bousquet and H. Goulet (Goulet, 1979; Bousquet and Goulet, 1984) produced on new opportunities forlarval descriptions. Unfor tunately, this method is currently poorly used (Arndt, 1989a, b; Arndt and Hurka, 1990; Bousquet, 1985a, b; 1986; Hurka, 1986; Makarow and Shilenkov, 1991 etc.) and can not be considered as a basis of the practical keys. The present work contains a key for determination of the main Palearctic carabid groups and takes into account most of the works that followed van Emden's monograph. -

KRENN Zusammenfassung: Schlagworte: Das Besammeln von alpinen Lebensräumen, wie Dolinen, Blockhalden oder Subterranfalle, Gletschervorfeldern mit den Standard-Sammelmethoden für Bodentiere liefert Carabidae, oftmals nur unbefriedigende Ergebnisse. Das Relief dieser Lebensräume wird von Oreonebria, Gesteinsbruchstücken verschiedenster Größenklassen gebildet und zeigt meist Stratifikation, Alpen auch eine starke vertikale Ausdehnung. Daher wurde in der vorliegenden Studie eine neu konstruierte Subterranfalle verwendet, die es möglich macht, das Substrat Keywords: störungsfrei und in verschiedenen Tiefen zu besammeln. Die Fallen waren von 2000 bis subterranean 2004 an vier alpinen Standorten in Verwendung (Zillertaler Alpen, Tirol; Schneeberg, trap, Carabidae, Niederösterreich; Koralpe und Hochobir, Kärnten). Es konnten 19 Laufkäferarten mit Oreonebria, soil 1823 Individuen gefangen werden. 94 Prozent aller Individuen wurden in einer Tiefe depth gradient, bis 20 cm gefangen, einige Exemplare sogar in 50 cm Tiefe. Die Gattung Oreonebria stratification, Alps ist, sowohl als Adulte wie auch als Larven, an jedem Standort das häufigste Taxon. Von drei Oreonebria-Arten (O. austriaca, O. diaphana, O. schusteri) konnten erstmals Larvenstadien gefangen werden. -

Patterns and drivers of terrestrial arthropod biodiversity in northern Canada Crystal M. Ernst 2015 Abstract The overarching goal of this thesis was to describe patterns of terrestrial arthropod biodiversity and community structure in northern Canada, and to explore the underlying drivers and mechanisms that are responsible for these patterns. The term “biodiversity” is used here in a broad sense that includes both taxonomic (TD) and functional (FD) diversity. Ground-dwelling arthropods, especially beetles (Coleoptera), were used as model taxa, and were collected using standardized methods from twelve locations in the three northernmost ecoclimatic zones of Canada. Beetle biodiversity changes over time and space. Over the course of one active season, rapid species and functional turnover were observed in two major habitats in one subarctic location (Kugluktuk, Nunavut). While some functional groups were apparent only for brief periods of time, entomophagous predators consistently dominated the assemblage structure in biomass and abundance. This dominance by carnivores was observed consistently throughout the study, regardless of spatial or taxonomic scope. This inverted trophic structure suggests that predators may rely on alternative, non-epigeic prey items. A natural history study of previously unknown host-parasite interactions between beetles and nematomorphs (Gordionus n. sp.) suggests that beetles use alate insects with aquatic larval stages as an important nutrient subsidy. Across the entire study region, beetle TD and FD, as well as overall assemblage structure, display strong negative relationships with latitude, which conforms to the classical latitudinal gradient of diversity. -
