If they came unitedly, there is a possibility that they were united in the desert and in Egypt. If their invasions were separated by wide intervals of time, there is no probability that they were united in their earlier history. Our estimate of the Patriarchal and the Mosaic traditions is thus conditioned upon the answer that we give to this question. -
Hurrian Language
Ilse Wegner Introduction to the Hurrian Language Forward: Among the numerous languages of ancient near east, Hurrian is an important one, but in contrast to Akkadian or Hittite there are few investigations of this language, and summary works documenting present knowledge are non-existent. The present “Introduction” shall then be interested in providing access to the grammar as reflected in present research. Many grammatical phenomena that are introduced here may however in the future be modified or even completely reevaluated by others, especially since the study of the Hurrian language is strongly contested. A scientific grammar in the strict sense is not included in this introduction. The previous aids to the learning of Hurrian are however all out-of-date (?) and derive from three grammars and one glossary as well as from numerous scattered published articles. Works that introduce grammar to the student by means of largely coherent text fragments do not exist. These details shall here be taken into account. As reading pieces artificially formed sample sentences are not used. The sample texts originate primarily from the Mittani letters and a few examples of the Bo!azköy texts. Following after a strictly grammatical portion comes a series of transcriptions, with a translation and a commentary provided as lessons. Lessons 1-10 are text passages from the Mittani letters, Lesions 11-13 originate from the Hurrian-Hittite bilinguals of Bo!azköy, and lesson 14 treats the Ti"atal-Inscription. The text passages that are taken from the Mittani letters are not arranged by content criteria, but instead suitable text fragments are chosen so that the grammatical material progresses from introductory to difficult. -

RAINEY International Visiting Research Scholar Centre for Classics and Archaeology University of Melbourne Victoria 3010 AUSTRALIA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The ensuing remarks seek to elucidate some of the central issues in the study of the cuneiform texts discovered at Tell el-¨Amârnah in Egypt. Progress in the study of the language, the social structure of Canaan at that time and certain historical problems will be reviewed. After an accidental find by a village woman in 1887. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie was the first modern scholar to conduct archaeological excavations at the actual site. His work determined the probable spot where the tablets had been deposited when the ancient town was abandoned. Subsequently, Petrie articulated various interpretations of the evidence from the archaeological finds and also from the inscriptions. During the twentieth century, research was continued on all the many facets of these momentous discoveries. The focus in this paper is on the cuneiform epistles, the international and parochial correspondence that involved the Egyptian gov- ernment.* * The present article is an expansion of the ‘2002 Flinders Petrie Oration,’ delivered on behalf of the Australian Institute of Archaeology and the Archaeological Research Unit, The School of Ecology and Environment, Deakin University, Burwood, Victoria, Australia, on 30 August, 2002. Morris New York University 'They must not call us warlords,' says Badshah Khan, leaning forward. 'If you call us warlords, we will kill you.'1 It is with a great deal of fondness that I dedicate this offering to David Silverman, who reigned as my own powerful, yet benevolent warlord for a period of eight years or so during the 1990’s. David fought fiercely on behalf of his students, which is something that all afforded his protec- tion and pedagogy appreciated greatly. Several years ago, in an effort to learn more about life in war-torn Afghanistan, I pur- chased a copy of The Bookseller of Kabul by Åsne Seierstad. The narrative focuses on events in the life of the family that she lived with in Kabul in 2002, just following the retreat of the Taliban. In one chapter, however, the action veers seventy or so miles away to the wild, mountainous borderlands that separate Afghanistan from Pakistan. Seierstad writes of encountering a powerful warlord while shadowing a journalist covering Operation Anaconda, the U.S. military’s major offensive against Taliban remnants in southeastern Afghanistan. I will quote the following passage at length, as it evoked for me a strong sense of déjà vu and one of those wonderful—and admittedly uncommon—sensations that the gap of more than three millennia that separates current affairs from those of the Late Bronze Age is not entirely insurmountable. -

Nowadays the word “Hebrew” refers to the language of the ancient Israelites, which was a variety of the ancient Canaanite language, and to its modern descendant which is the official language of the state of Israel. However, in the Old Testament, the word “Hebrew” never has this meaning. Prior to the book of 2 Kings the language is never named, and after that point it is usually called “the language of Judah”. What it was called before the division of the kingdom at the death of Solomon is unknown. It may have been called “the language of Israel”, though we have no evidence of this. The HA-BI-RU--Kin Or Foe of Israel?

KLINE FIGURING in near eastern history for something over a millennium of Old Testament times was an enigmatic entity called the ha-BI-ru.1 Successful of old in capturing the spoil in biblical lands, they have in modern times been even more successful in capturing the attention of biblical scholars. More than half a century of general scholarly interest cul- minated in a united effort to identify the ha-BI-ru at the fourth Rencontre assyriologique internationale held in Paris in the summer of 1953. But that gathering did not succeed in alter- ing the previous state of the question which has been described in the terms: quot capita tot sententiae.2 The ha-BI-ru, there- fore, continue an enigma, and the curiosity which has prompted the present study may be forgiven though its con- sequence be to confound yet worse the confusion with yet another conclusion.3 Of particular attraction to those concerned with biblical history and faith has been the apparent identity in name between the ha-BI-ru and the Hebrews.4 This has spawned a variety of theories sharing as a common nucleus the idea 1 The syllabification of ha-BI-ru represents the cuneiform orthography and the capitalization of the second syllable designates a particular cuneiform sign without prejudice to the question of which of the two most common values of it, namely bi and pi, is to be adopted. -

DOAK HARVARD UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION This essay is an attempt to explore certain aspects of three provoc- ative tales in the book of Judges—the rise to power of Abimelek in ch. 9 and Jephthah in ch. 11, and the actions of the landless Da- nites in ch. 18—and to interpret these stories in light of what evi- dence we possess regarding the existence of so-called habiru1 groups in the 2nd millennium BCE and in light of some anthropo- logical theory regarding the behavior of “parasocial” bands in the formation of (at least) short-term political and military structures in the Near East.2 The preponderance of ideological readings of Judges in the last 20 years may leave one with the mistaken impres- sion that the book has value only as a kind of cultural or theological foil, meant to demonstrate the disastrous results of violence and power in a “backwards” ancient context.3 As stimulating as these 1 For the sake of standardization and convenience, I have rendered this term as “habiru” throughout the essay. -

Goddess İšhara Tanrıça İšhara Leyla Murat* Abstract The Hittite cuneiform texts and the archeological evidence point out clearly that the Hittites had a polytheist belief in their religious life. One of the most important gods which take place in this religious system is Goddess Išhara. This goddess has an important role in Hittite Pantheon including one thousand Hittite sacred gods. Goddess Išhara, who has a Mesopotamian origin, and who is transported to the Anatolia by Hurrians, is also the most important goddess of the Kizzuwatna region. Išhara is both illness- and cure-bestowed goddess; it also seems that a number of attributes such as underground, plant, mountain, river, spring, queen of oath, sexuality / propagation, cursing, sin, blood, dirtiness and making purification from the harmful things are given to this goddess. Key Words: Goddess Išhara, Kizzuwatna, illness, cure/health, oath, curse, purifying from the dirtiness/evil. Hititlerdeki bu inanç sisteminde yer alan tanrılardan biri de Tanrıça Išhara’dır. Bu tanrıça Hititlerin kutsal tanrılarından olu şan bin tanrılı Hitit Panteonu’nda çok önemli bir konuma sahiptir. Mezopotamya kökenli olan ve Hurriler aracılı ğı ile Anadolu’ya giren Tanrıça Išhara, Kizzuwatna bölgesinin en önemli tanrıçasıdır. Bu tanrıça hem hastalık veren hem de şifa veren, ayrıca yer altı, bitki, da ğ, ırmak, su kayna ğı, yeminin kraliçesi, cinsellik/üreme, lanetleme, günah, kan, cinayet, kirlilik ve kötülüklerden arındırıcı tanrıça gibi pek çok özelli ği bünyesinde ta şıyan bir tanrıçadır.
