Throughout our nation's history, the exploits of our fighting men and women have served as inspiration to future generations. Today, as genealogists, we can use the collection of these military records in our research efforts. Military records tell us for whom our ancestor fought, when they fought, where they lived when they fought, and occasionally more about their family and where they lived after they fought.

How do we begin? We must first determine if we have an ancestor who may have served in the military service either as a volunteer (meaning they enlisted in special volunteer companies) or as a regular (meaning they enlisted in the regular army). It is common practice to look at the major military involvement periods and compare the ages of your ancestors within that time period to determine if they were of an eligible or likely age. By looking at the military conflicts when your ancestor was between the ages of seventeen and fifty, you will determine which ancestors should be considered as potential military volunteers .

John Doe was born in 1765. • The Revolutionary War occurred from the year 1775 to the year 1783. In 1775, John Doe would have been ten years old. He is probably too young to serve. In 1783, he would have been eighteen years old. It is possible that John Doe served as a soldier before the end of the American Revolutionary War.

What Military Conflict? Compare your ancestors' ages using the following time line for the major U.S. military conflicts. Civil War World War II Revolutionary War 1861-1865 1941-1945 1775 -1783 Spanish-American War Warof1812 1898-1899 1950-1953 1812-1815 Philippine Insurrection Indian Wars 1899-1902 1815-1858 World War I Mexican Wars 1917-1918 1846-1848

Once you have determined that an ancestor had the potential for serving in a military conflict, • you can move to the next step. On which side of the conflict did your ancestor serve ... Federal or Confederate; Loyalist or Rebel? lfhe served in a militia unit, his unit could have been called into federal service or it could have only been a state level organization. You should look at the information you have collected about your ancestor. Did he have a gravestone with military inscriptions?

Earnest L. Lowe WWI 22nd Medic Corps Hosp

Were there medals, patches or service ribbons? There are publications that describe the service ribbons and medals for each conflict and pictures the unit patches. The following URL describes US Military Ribbons: http://sg12.virtualave.net/xmilitary-area/army.htm See the end of the article for additional web sites. These clues may lead you specific units or time frame when your ancestor served. Once you have determined the specific conflict, you should check the reference for that conflict. Some of these military conflicts have published indices. Other conflicts may require that you look on National Archives Microfilm compiled service records for the conflict. •-- Do not allow the amount of available military records scare you away. Once you have found • one military ancestor, the second time you search will 'seem much easier. The National Archives has a select list of available military records on their web site. You can also purchase a printed volume for about $3 or $4 from the web site. (www.nara.gov) The references listed below may help you find an ancestor who served in a U.S. military conflict. Then you will be ready to request the military record or pension. Good hunting.

• 7 The Muhlenberg County Heritage, Volume 23, Number 1, 2001 Finding Vital Statistics for Kentucky

Submitted by J. Mark Lowe, CG • 505 Josephine Springfield, TN

The Commonwealth of Kentucky kept no birth or death records prior to 1852. The first vital statistics law, called the Sutton Law required tax assessors to record births, marriages, and deaths each year as they assessed property for the tax. This vital statistics law was repealed in 1862.

The original lists, returns, and certificates of births, marriages, and deaths which survive are in the State Archives. They are arranged by county and are for the years 1852-1859. Other years survive for some counties. It is best to consult the microfilm for counties of your interest. Many of these records for our area are available at the Kentucky Library and the LDS Family History Center.

State-wide registration of births and deaths began in 1911. Online access is available from the University of Kentucky for the Kentucky Death Index from 1911-1992 and Statewide Marriage Index and Divorce Index from 1973-93. RootsWeb also has searchable databases for Kentucky Marriages (1973-2000) and Kentucky Deaths (1911-2000). These can purchased on CD-ROM or located at (http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ky/marriage/search.cgi) and at (http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ky/death/search.cgi). These easy to use databases, containing over 8 million records and provide searching by county as well as by name within various date ranges. For the most recent years,' they contain fields that are not found on microfilm or in files found on • the Internet. The disks contain a Microsoft Access 97 runtime program to open the databases. They have been tested on computers running Windows 95 and 98 operating systems. They will not work with the Apple Macintosh operating system. A full set of Births, Marriage and Death Records cost $30. A set of Death Records 1911-1999 cost only $12. A set of Birth Records 1911- 1999 and Marriage Records 1973-1999 cost $24. Kentucky residents should include sales tax. Please make the check or money order for CD-ROM orders payable to "Kentucky State Treasurer" and mail to: Alice Yeager, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, 300 Coffee Tree Road, P.O. Box 537, Frankfort, KY 40602-0537.

The Office of Vital Statistics, 275 East Main Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601, maintains birth and death certificates dating from 1911 and marriage certificates dating from 195 8. Death certificates are also available from the State Archives for the years 1911-1949. The Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society cooperated with the Kentucky Library several years ago to purchase many rolls of the Kentucky Death Certificates microfilm. Printed copies and microfiche copies of the Kentucky Death Index are available at the Kentucky Library. You must use the death index to determine the year of death, and certificate number. You should also note the volume number and verify that it is the same as the year of death. If the volume number is 39 and the year of death is 38, you will find the death certificate on the film for 1939, instead of 1938. Although you may make copies of these death certificates, the Kentucky Library does have forms for the transcription of data from the microfilm. After you check this information, be sure to • 8 The Muhlenberg County Heritage, Volume 23, Number 1, 2001

Descendants ofBartholomew Stovall (1655-1722) compiled by Donald E. Bishop has recently been donated to the Kentucky Library in Bowling Green, KY. The book was published by The Stovall Family Association, Inc., in 1999.

The publishers state that the book represents the first five American generations of Stovalls stemming from the immigrant, Bartholomew Stovall, who came to Virginia in 1684. They believe the book to be substantially accurate but state that it is not a professionally researched and documented genealogy. They describe it as a compilation.

22 • Muhlenberg County, KY Comprehensive Census Index • 1850-1880

An index by family groups of both the National Archives Census microfilm and Muhlenberg County transcribed census books.

Compiled by Brenda Collier Doss

This census index is an extremely useful tool for all genealogists and family historians with extensive family connections in Muhlenberg County. It moves beyond the traditional census index in several ways. The index is a full first name index for the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Muhlenberg County, KY, listing both heads of households of those living in households with different surnames. Brenda examined and grouped entries for each family group listed in every census together for each census year. If there were men of the same name, she grouped them separately in the index including only the entries went together. Separate indexes are given for the microfilm page numbers and for the transcribed Muhlenberg County, KY census books sold by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society. The listings below would be typical. The first two numbers give the census year and the second three give the page number.

Tanner, William 500098,60100. Tanner, William (Anna) 70023, 80122.

The above entry shows that William Tanner appeared in the 1850 and 1860 census and that his widow appeared as the head of household in 1870 and 1880 .

Brown, Samuel 70523,80021. • Brown, Samuel 80021. Brown, Samuel Sr 50187, 60765.

The above entry shows that there were three different Samuel Brown families appearing across the 1850 through 1880 census years. The examples listed above show how the index can be used to quickly located specific families across time and quickly scan for different families of the same name. There are sepa.iate indexes for microfilm page numbers and book page numbers. The index 8 1/2 x 11 format, 114 pages of acid free paper. It is available in either laminated soft cover or hard cover. Take advantage of the pre-publication prices. Available 1 April 2001. Hard-cover, postage paid. $25.00 (Before 1 April 2001.] $30.00 (After 1 April 2001.)
