Mark Lowe, CG 505 Josephine Springfield, TN Throughout our nation's history, the exploits of our fighting men and women have served as inspiration to future generations. Today, as genealogists, we can use the collection of these military records in our research efforts. Military records tell us for whom our ancestor fought, when they fought, where they lived when they fought, and occasionally more about their family and where they lived after they fought. How do we begin? We must first determine if we have an ancestor who may have served in the military service either as a volunteer (meaning they enlisted in special volunteer companies) or as a regular (meaning they enlisted in the regular army). It is common practice to look at the major military involvement periods and compare the ages of your ancestors within that time period to determine if they were of an eligible or likely age. By looking at the military conflicts when your ancestor was between the ages of seventeen and fifty, you will determine which ancestors should be considered as potential military volunteers . John Doe was born in 1765. • The Revolutionary War occurred from the year 1775 to the year 1783. In 1775, John Doe would have been ten years old. He is probably too young to serve. In 1783, he would have been eighteen years old. It is possible that John Doe served as a soldier before the end of the American Revolutionary War. What Military Conflict? Compare your ancestors' ages using the following time line for the major U.S. military conflicts. Civil War World War II Revolutionary War 1861-1865 1941-1945 1775 -1783 Spanish-American War Korean War Warof1812 1898-1899 1950-1953 1812-1815 Philippine Insurrection Indian Wars 1899-1902 1815-1858 World War I Mexican Wars 1917-1918 1846-1848 • 3 The Muhlenberg County Heritage, Volume 23, Number I, 2001 Once you have determined that an ancestor had the potential for serving in a military conflict, • you can move to the next step. On which side of the conflict did your ancestor serve ... Federal or Confederate; Loyalist or Rebel? lfhe served in a militia unit, his unit could have been called into federal service or it could have only been a state level organization. You should look at the information you have collected about your ancestor. Did he have a gravestone with military inscriptions? Earnest L. Lowe WWI 22nd Medic Corps Hosp Were there medals, patches or service ribbons? There are publications that describe the service ribbons and medals for each conflict and pictures the unit patches. The following URL describes US Military Ribbons: http://sg12.virtualave.net/xmilitary-area/army.htm See the end of the article for additional web sites. These clues may lead you specific units or time frame when your ancestor served. Once you have determined the specific conflict, you should check the reference for that conflict. Some of these military conflicts have published indices. Other conflicts may require that you look on National Archives Microfilm compiled service records for the conflict. •-- Do not allow the amount of available military records scare you away. Once you have found • one military ancestor, the second time you search will 'seem much easier. The National Archives has a select list of available military records on their web site. You can also purchase a printed volume for about $3 or $4 from the web site. (www.nara.gov) The references listed below may help you find an ancestor who served in a U.S. military conflict. Then you will be ready to request the military record or pension. Good hunting. Index ofRevolutionary War Pension Applications, National Genealogical Society, 4th Printing, 1987.
