A PDF COMPANION to the AUDIOBOOK Special Extra Content from Melanie! A PDF COMPANION TO THE AUDIOBOOK Special Extra Content from Melanie! spent a year of my life writing this book because I believe so I strongly that life really is richer and better when we don’t lose sight of all the small daily gifts in our lives and, if nothing else, writing that book made me believe it even more. (It also helped me get my baseboards the cleanest they’ve ever been and finally finish watching The West Wing on Netflix because pro- crastination is my friend.) Sometimes it’s a good idea to look around at all the little things in your life that bring you joy. And you can even make a list if you feel so inclined. I have always been a fan of making lists. I like to make lists of books I want to read and places I’d like to go and, true story, I often make to-do lists for the week and add things that I’ve already done just to help myself feel productive because sometimes happiness is found in being able to cross something out with a Sharpie. And so it felt like a natural choice to share some lists of various things I love in this book. The majority of the things on these lists are not life-chang- ing in any way—they are just some of the small things in life that 223 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 223 7/18/19 9:05 AM It’s All About the Small Things make me happy. They are things that have caused me to laugh out loud or wipe away a few tears or to reflect on memories I thought I had forgotten years ago. In a way, they are what make me me. As Pam Beesly from The Office says, “There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that the point?” I believe the small, ordi-nary things in our life are the building bricks to the cathedral that becomes our legacy. I encourage you to make your own lists. Or just write down your thoughts. Or draw really cool stick figures . whatever works for you. Reflect on your own small things and small moments that make up your life. It’s amazing what we discover when we take the time to count up all those little bits of good we take for granted every day. Wishing you so much love and joy! —Melanie 224 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 224 7/18/19 9:05 AM Small Things That Make Life Worth Living List Sometimes it’s in the nothing special that we find the best parts of life. Ten Small Things That Make Me Happy 1. Summer nights staying up way too late with my daughter, Caroline, watching a movie or just lying on opposite ends of the couch reading our respective books. 2. A venti non-fat latte with one raw sugar. Or when I’m feeling really wild, an iced caramel macchiato. 3. A thunderstorm that rolls through in the middle of the night. 4. A wine night with my girlfriends. 5. New pajamas. 6. Date night with Perry. 7. Cold nights and a fire in the fireplace. 8. Getting a reflexology massage at this neighborhood place. I don’t know if I actually believe in the science of it but it feels amazing. 9. Reading a great book. Preferably a well-written memoir, something about royalty or anything set in World War II. 10. Piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. (Someone should write a song about that.) 225 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 225 7/18/19 9:05 AM Pop Culture Lists Never underestimate the power of a great movie quote or a TV show to turn your day around. My List of Guilty-Pleasure Movies The other day there was a John Hughes’ movie marathon on TV, and now I refer to that day as the best day ever. I thought about how almost every single one of his movies fall into the category of movies I will stop and watch every time they’re on. Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were the movies of my teen years, and I spent countless dol- lars going to see them at the dollar movie theater around the corner from my house. And then I started thinking of other movies I will stop and watch every time they’re on TV and came up with this list that is definitely not comprehensive, but rather an adequate representa- tion of my taste in cinema. This may be the reason that I’ve never been asked to be a member of the Academy. Well, this list and the fact that no one in Hollywood has a clue that I exist. 1. The Philadelphia Story - The version with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant is one of my favorites of all time. It’s so witty and makes me feel all swoony inside. 227 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 227 7/18/19 9:05 AM It’s All About the Small Things 2. Gone with the Wind - Of course. Rhett and Scarlett were my #goals until I was old enough to realize their relationship wasn’t actually necessarily healthy. 3. Rocky I, II, III, IV - I have no explanation, but it’s true. I pity the fool who doesn’t appreciate Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa. That being said, I have no need to see Rocky V ever again. 4. Sweet Home Alabama - I love Reese Witherspoon in this movie and I just find the whole thing so charmingly romantic and sweet. 5. Coalminer’s Daughter - I can recite every line from memory. 6. Little Women - The Winona Ryder version. If it’s cold and rainy outside, I will hunt this movie down and watch it. 7. Grease 1 and Grease 2 - I should be ashamed to own up to 2, but Michelle Pfeiffer singing “Cool Rider” redeems Grease 2, and Grease 1 is just a classic. 8. Bridget Jones’ Diary - Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. The end. 9. Best in Show - So many levels of genius in one movie. 10. Lonesome Dove - Technically it’s a miniseries, but it’s pure greatness. And the reason I have a large crush on Robert Duvall. 228 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 228 7/18/19 9:05 AM My Favorite TV Shows of All Time I love a good TV show, especially now that Netflix is a thing and you can watch just about any show you want at any time. This is much different from the days of my childhood when I had to meticu- lously set the VCR to record Days of Our Lives while I was at school. Yes, I watched Days of Our Lives as a junior high kid and spent my formative years thinking Bo and Hope were the ideal couple except for the part where one of them kept getting kidnapped by Stefano DiMera. This basically proves my working theory that the 70s and 80s were a weird time to be a kid. But at least we knew the struggle of having to watch commercials. Anyway, here are my favorite TV shows of all time, the ones I have watched over and over again and still love as much as I did the first time around. 1. Friday Night Lights - I live in Texas. I love football. The end. Yet this show is so much more. I contend that Eric and Tami Taylor have one of the most real marriages depicted on TV, and every character on this show has a piece of my heart. Except for Season 2 which was sketchy. 2. The Office - I just re-watched this entire series over the last couple of months and I think I loved it even more. Jim and Pam are the greatest. Also, I cried like a baby watching the series finale. 229 9780310354963_AllAboutSmallThings_2p.indd 229 7/18/19 9:05 AM It’s All About the Small Things 3. Parenthood - This show makes me wish I was part of a big family that regularly gathered to eat under twinkle lights in our parents’ backyard. 4. Parks and Recreation - This show is the perfect blend of comedy and heart. It’s one of those where you laugh at all the bizarre characters and then realize you have completely and totally become invested in their imaginary lives. 5. Seinfeld - If there is one show I still quote to this day, it’s Seinfeld. There really isn’t a situation that will arise in life that can’t circle back to a Seinfeld episode. 6. Friends - I became an adult along with Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey. They got me through figuring out how to be a career girl, meeting Perry, and having Caroline. In short, they were there for me. 7. Gilmore Girls - Lorelai Gilmore was the kind of mom I hoped to be long before I knew I’d be a mom of an only daughter. The witty banter and the quirky characters make this show. 8. Little House on the Prairie - I realize this seems random, but this is an all-time list. I remember vividly waiting anxiously on Monday nights for this to come on and to see Laura Ingalls run down that hill in the opening credits. To this day, I will stop and watch if I happen to be flipping through the channels and see that’s it one of the episodes where Laura and Almanzo fall in love. 9. Beverly Hills 90210 - Yes. I admit it.

Beneath the ground, the wooden casket I am trapped in is being lowered deeper and deeper into the cold, dark earth. Fear overtakes me as I fall into a paralytic state. I can hear the dirt being shoveled over me. My heart pounds through my chest. I can’t scream, and if I could, who would hear me? Just as the final shovel of soil is being packed tightly over me, I convulse out of my nightmare into the sweat- and urine-soaked bed in the small apartment on the island of Manhattan that my family calls home. Shaken and disoriented, I make my way out of the tiny back bedroom into the pitch-dark living room, where my mother and father sleep on a convertible couch. I stand at the foot of their bed just staring … waiting.

  • Whether You're Dark Or You're Fair
“Whether You’re Dark or You’re Fair”: The Black Female Body in A Different World and School Daze By Inda Lauryn Note: This piece was written sometime between 2003 and 2006 during my graduate school years. It was never published. Introduction Although the primary purpose of comedy is to make us laugh, it also at times serves as a vehicle to address or comment upon societal issues. Historically, film and television executives have assumed that audiences would not be receptive to socially-conscious programming, particularly programming that comes with an African-American face. For instance, Herman Gray (1995) argues that blackness and blacks “served to amuse and comfort culturally sanctioned notions of whiteness, especially white superiority and paternalism (p. 75),” implying that African Americans exist in a very limited capacity within the television world. Interestingly, African Americans have mostly been relegated to the realm of comedy (and musical performance) in their film and television representations. As a result, not only have these representations carried a significant amount of weight within the overall scheme of African- American images, but they have also led African Americans to seek more creative ways in which to use comedy for purposes other than laughter. Quite possibly the success of Norman Lear’s situation comedies from the 1970s and the success of blaxploitation cinema of that same era forced executives to realize that there was a viable black audience willing not only to laugh at itself but also willing to examine the social conditions surrounding them. Yet, at the heart of these representations lie the legacies of the tom, the buck, the coon, the tragic mulatto, the mammy, Sambo and Sapphire, as scholars such as Donald Bogle (1994) have documented.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILIES PORTRAYED IN BLACK FAMILY TELEVISION COMEDIES BETWEEN 1980 AND 2000 Committee Chair: Charmayne Patterson, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2018 Research shows that black people watch more television than any other race of people, and, given that television is the most influential media tool, the content of what may affect an audience’s behavior and beliefs deserves analysis. This study examines the black family, alleged pathology, strengths that are specifically associated with them, its portrayal on television, and how television is used as a tool for socialization and influence. A content analysis of the top thirty black family shows that appeared on major network television between 1980 and 2000 was conducted to determine if the family framed was portrayed realistically. Each show analyzed was found to portray some characteristic of strong black families, attributes some media and social critics had not previously recognized or acknowledged. This study suggests that further research is warranted from black family, cultural, and media scholars, as well as social policy and i program makers, and on how television influences entire cultures to shift socially and economically. ii IS THIS BLACK ENOUGH FOR YOU?
