The West Wing Weekly 1.22: What Kind of Day Has It Been [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening the The West Wing Weekly, I’m Hrishikesh Hirway JOSH: ..and I’m Joshua Malina HRISHI: Today, we’re talking about the finale of season one JOSH: Woo! HRISHI: It’s episode 22, and it’s called ‘What kind of day has it been’. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Tommy Schlamme, and it originally aired on May 17th, in the year 2000. HRISHI: Here’s a synopsis.. JOSH: A hrynopsis? HRISHI: [laughs] Sure.. JOSH: I just wanted to make sure because, you know, it’s an important distinction. HRISHI: An American fighter jet goes down in Iraq, and a rescue mission ensues to find the pilot. But, it’s a covert operation, so CJ has to mislead the press. Toby’s brother is onboard the space shuttle Columbia, but it’s having mechanical difficulties and can’t land. Plus, Josh has to meet with the Vice President to bring him around to the Bartlet administration's plans for campaign finance. President Bartlet travels to Rosalind, Virginia, to speak at the Newseum and give a live town hall meeting. But as they’re exiting, S#&* goes down and shots ring out. JOSH: Well done HRISHI: Before we even get into the episode though, Josh, I want to ask you about the title. ‘What kind of day has it been’ is a very Sorkin title, it’s been the finale for lots of things that he’s done before. -

“Whether You’re Dark or You’re Fair”: The Black Female Body in A Different World and School Daze By Inda Lauryn Note: This piece was written sometime between 2003 and 2006 during my graduate school years. It was never published. Introduction Although the primary purpose of comedy is to make us laugh, it also at times serves as a vehicle to address or comment upon societal issues. Historically, film and television executives have assumed that audiences would not be receptive to socially-conscious programming, particularly programming that comes with an African-American face. For instance, Herman Gray (1995) argues that blackness and blacks “served to amuse and comfort culturally sanctioned notions of whiteness, especially white superiority and paternalism (p. 75),” implying that African Americans exist in a very limited capacity within the television world. Interestingly, African Americans have mostly been relegated to the realm of comedy (and musical performance) in their film and television representations. As a result, not only have these representations carried a significant amount of weight within the overall scheme of African- American images, but they have also led African Americans to seek more creative ways in which to use comedy for purposes other than laughter. Quite possibly the success of Norman Lear’s situation comedies from the 1970s and the success of blaxploitation cinema of that same era forced executives to realize that there was a viable black audience willing not only to laugh at itself but also willing to examine the social conditions surrounding them. Yet, at the heart of these representations lie the legacies of the tom, the buck, the coon, the tragic mulatto, the mammy, Sambo and Sapphire, as scholars such as Donald Bogle (1994) have documented. -

Becoming a Modern American Playwright: Examining Hansberry, Miller, and Edson Katie Bauer Lee High School INTRODUCTION I grew up in a small town in East Texas where everyone knew everyone else. I went to school with basically the same kids from kindergarten all the way to high school. Every once in a while, a new kid might move in or an old one might move out, but it certainly wasn’t a regular occurrence. There was the occasional fistfight and there was a ton of gossip (he said/she said), but for the most part, not much of anything seemed to go on around there. Most of us lived in two-parent households. My parents had divorced, but my grandparents lived with us, so that kind of made up for the absence of one. It seemed like everyone either lived on a good piece of land or if they didn’t, they knew someone who did. We spent much of our time roaming over pastures and exploring in the woods. Even in town, we were free to walk the streets, buying an ice cream at the local five and dime and then eating it on the courthouse steps. I never thought much of the freedom with which I lived in my younger years, never really appreciated the idyllic nature of what I was allowed and able to do . until recently. I teach drama in an inner-city high school in Houston. It has never ceased to amaze me the kinds of things my students reveal to me about their personal lives. -
