A voracious collector of Diderot and his circle, he had an eye for the exceptional and the esoteric, eagerly pursuing little known works, interesting provenances and unusual bindings alongside the masterpieces of the philosophes. This catalogue presents a selection of these books, the often outlandish and eccentric publications that formed the backdrop to the great philosophical upheaval of the Age of Enlightenment. The majority of books in this catalogue are ‘les petits textes du XVIIIe siècle’: the forbidden best-sellers, the books by and about women, the forgotten sallies against the ancien régime, the libertine novels and fairy tales (some ‘très libres’), the ‘self-help’ titles and many curious and little known ‘livres facétieux et galants’. Alongside great works by Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau are lesser known titles by Restif, Mirabeau, La Mettrie, Sylvain Maréchal and the comte de Caylus.

  • Decree Establishing Particular Law for the Diocese of Stockton Concerning the Citation of the Parties in Cases Before the Tribunal
Decree Establishing Particular Law for the Diocese of Stockton Concerning the Citation of the Parties in Cases Before the Tribunal Canon 1509, §1 of the Code of Canon Law states that The notification of citations, decrees, sentences, and other judicial acts must be made through the public postal services or by some other very secure method according to the norms established in particular law. In today’s increasingly mobile society, the problem has developed whereby it is difficult at best to ascertain the location of some Respondents in marriage cases introduced to the diocesan Tribunal. Inasmuch as a Petitioner has the right to receive a just and timely judgment to a legitimately posited petition and the Respondent has the right to know about and participate in the process as determined by canon law, the diocesan Tribunal is to be commended for striving to achieve a balance in protecting the rights of both parties. After some years of working to develop an equitable process for ensuring that the rights of the Petitioner and Respondent in marriage cases are protected, and with the promulgation of the Instruction Dignitas connubii on 25 January 2005, it is opportune now to establish more definitively by particular law the process to be followed for the citation of the Parties in marriage cases introduced to the Tribunal of the Diocese of Stockton. NORMS 1. Method of Citation. As noted above, canon 1509, §1 requires that Parties be cited by means of the public postal service. Since “the fact of notification and its method must be evident in the acts” (c.

  • Motu Proprio
Motu proprio In law, motu proprio (Latin for: "on his own impulse") describes an official act taken without a formal request from another party. Some jurisdictions use the termsua sponte for the same concept. In Catholic canon law, it refers to a document issued by the Pope on his own initiative and personally signed by him.[1] Such a document may be addressed to the whole Church, to part of it, or to some individuals.[1] A document issued motu proprio has its legal effect even if the reasons given for its issuance are found to be false or fraudulent, a fact which would normally render the document invalid. Its validity is based on its issuance by the pope by his own initiative, not upon the reasons alleged. The first motu proprio was promulgated by Pope Innocent VIII in 1484. It continues to be a common form of Papal rescript, especially when establishing institutions, making minor changes to law or procedure, and when granting favours to persons or institutions.[2] Contents Effect Form Notable examples In civil law References External links Effect An important effect of the issue of a document in this way is that a rescript containing the clause motu proprio is valid and produces its effect even in cases where fraud would ordinarily have vitiated the document, since the Pope does not rely on the reasons alleged when he grants a favour.[2] Withholding of the truth in what, according to canonical law, style and practice, must for validity be expressed, normally renders a rescript invalid, but not if the rescript is issued motu proprio.[3]

  • Fiestas and Fervor: Religious Life and Catholic Enlightenment in the Diocese of Barcelona, 1766-1775
FIESTAS AND FERVOR: RELIGIOUS LIFE AND CATHOLIC ENLIGHTENMENT IN THE DIOCESE OF BARCELONA, 1766-1775 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Andrea J. Smidt, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Dale K. Van Kley, Adviser Professor N. Geoffrey Parker Professor Kenneth J. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.
