Home to 21 million people, spread over an area of 3527 km2, makes it the 4th largest metropolitan city in the world. It is the hub of Pakistan’s economic activities and contributes 25% in Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP), 65% of national income tax revenue,1 54 percent in central government tax revenues, and 30% in industrial output.2 Karachi is Pakistan's premier centre of banking, industry and trade and employs the largest population in these sectors. It boasts higher education in South Asia and has the highest literacy rate in the country that is up to 90 percent. However, the city’s cosmopolitanism and economic growth are constantly undermined by violent disruptions.
