Sonification As a Means to Generative Music Ian Baxter
Sonification as a means to generative music By: Ian Baxter A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts & Humanities Department of Music January 2020 Abstract This thesis examines the use of sonification (the transformation of non-musical data into sound) as a means of creating generative music (algorithmic music which is evolving in real time and is of potentially infinite length). It consists of a portfolio of ten works where the possibilities of sonification as a strategy for creating generative works is examined. As well as exploring the viability of sonification as a compositional strategy toward infinite work, each work in the portfolio aims to explore the notion of how artistic coherency between data and resulting sound is achieved – rejecting the notion that sonification for artistic means leads to the arbitrary linking of data and sound. In the accompanying written commentary the definitions of sonification and generative music are considered, as both are somewhat contested terms requiring operationalisation to correctly contextualise my own work. Having arrived at these definitions each work in the portfolio is documented. For each work, the genesis of the work is considered, the technical composition and operation of the piece (a series of tutorial videos showing each work in operation supplements this section) and finally its position in the portfolio as a whole and relation to the research question is evaluated. The body of work is considered as a whole in relation to the notion of artistic coherency. This is separated into two main themes: the relationship between the underlying nature of the data and the compositional scheme and the coherency between the data and the soundworld generated by each piece. -

Plagiarism is to use another’s work and to pretend that it is one’s own. I have used the author date convention for citation and referencing. Each significant contribution to and quotation in this dissertation from the work/s of other people has been acknowledged through citation and reference. I declare that this dissertation is my own unaided work. It is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination in any other university. Jonathan Crossley 9405149d 01-09-–2017 ii Abstract This thesis documents the development and realisation of an augmented instrument, the cyber-guitar, expressed through the processes of artistic practice as research. The research project set out to extend my own creative practice on the guitar by technologically enabling and extending the instrument. This process was supported by a number of creative outcomes (performances, compositions and recordings), running parallel to the interrogation of theoretical areas emerging out of the research. In the introduction I present a timeline for the project and situate the work in the field of artistic practice as research, explaining the relationship between research and artistic practice as research. -

The exhibition consists of four new projects that represent the culmination of two years of research, travel, and creation, all centred around critical approaches to the depiction of physical environments. The title takes its name from the theory of apparent magnitude, credited to ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus in the 2nd century BCE. Apparent magnitude was used to measure the brightness of celestial objects, and has evolved over the past two millennia to become a much more complex and integrated part of modern astrophysics. I am proposing that apparent magnitude can be thought of as a metaphor for the ways casual observations and depictions become embedded in culture and ideology – specifically in the context of how we represent physical environments. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank and acknowledge the support of my supervisor Mary Kavanagh, and supervisory committee members Don Gill and David Miller. -

Biografia Di Brian
Brian Eno: a Biographical Note Brian Eno has become an iconic figure within international contemporary culture. As an artist, musician, ideologue and systems-maker, he has not only written, performed, recorded and produced some of the most original music of the last thirty years, but has also established a philosophy of cultural production which links the enquiring spirit of conceptual art to the broadest applications of popular culture and sociology. Best known in the field of music, Eno’s discography as a musician, producer and artistic collaborator includes some of the most acclaimed recordings in the history of modern music. Artists as seminal yet varied as John Cale, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Bono, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and Coldplay have chosen to work with Eno, and he is one of the most sought after figures working across the spectrum of contemporary music, from guitar driven rock to film scores and electronica. And yet music is only one strand of Eno’s creative project. As a lecturer, visual artist, writer, political activist and futurologist, his opinions and ideas have been requested by institutions and think tanks on subjects as disparate as concepts of time, urban futures, perfume making and the history of art. The publication by Faber & Faber of his diary for 1995, under the title ‘A Year With Swollen Appendices’, proved a best seller and gave some indication of the extraordinary range and diversity of Eno’s activities. In 1996, he also co-founded The Long Now Foundation, as a creative organization dedicated to addressing the contemporary social and individual relationship with time, acceleration and experience. -
