“Rat Girl”, De Kristin Hersh
DARE TO BE ONE OF US, GIRL Inicio About ← Music Mon: KAREN O Arty Wed: FRANCES HA → Buscar Book Tues: “RAT GIRL”, DE KRISTIN HERSH OUR SHIT Publicado el septiembre 2, 2014 ARTY EXTRA Mirar hacia atrás y releer tus diarios tiene tanto de pornográfica vergüenza como de LITERATURA fascinante prueba del delito. Fuckin like us! -

WORD Kristin 3
For immediate release !15 July, 2014 Music is the WORD - Rock Musician Kristin Hersh Headlines !Christchurch Literary Festival Seminal indie-rock musician Kristin Hersh is coming to New Zealand to share her music and prose !at the WORD Christchurch Writers & Readers Festival, presented in association with The Press. Hersh will join literary heavyweights such as Eleanor Catton, Ruth Reichl and Meg Wolitzer at the multi-day festival, which runs from 27—31 August. She will perform her solo show WORDS + MUSIC on 30 August at the magnificent Transitional Cathedral and will make several other !appearances throughout the festival. WORD Christchurch’s Literary Director Rachael King, herself an ex-bass player with several Flying !Nun bands, has been a fan since she was 17. “I am thrilled to bring Kristin to Christchurch to help us redefine the parameters of what a literary festival can be. I had recently read her brilliant memoir, and saw that she was actively touring overseas, promoting both her music and her book. So I sent an invitation to New Zealand and !was overjoyed when she accepted.” In 1986, Throwing Muses was the first American band signed to the legendary label 4AD, which went on to acquire the Muses’ contemporaries, the Pixies and the Breeders. Since then, Hersh has forged a solo career, beginning with 1994’s Hips and Makers, formed 50 Foot Wave, and continued to play with the Throwing Muses; their latest album, Purgatory/Paradise, is !accompanied by a book of photos, essays, stories and lyrics. Hersh’s memoir Paradoxical Undressing tells the remarkable story of a year in her life when she was 17, playing in Throwing Muses, and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. -
Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings
Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings The Mighty Good Boys – The God-King Gerald Ford Local folk rock outfit The Mighty Good Boys are out with their second album, The God-King Gerald Ford, and it’s a real banger, as the kids would say. The album represents a superb sophomore effort for the group, whose mature songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements set them apart in a crowded field of local rootsy rock ‘n’ roll bands. At times, Americana-style music seems to be at risk of becoming a fad, generified to the level of bands like the Lumineers. Like The Band, The MGB inject the traditional music template with their own brand of edge and electricity. Gerald Ford features decidedly more ambitious material than their debut album, It Ain’t Easy. They move fluidly from bar band blues rock to folk to sprawling, Crazy Horse-style guitar jams that show they’re putting it all on the line. Lyrically, the album is like multiple Dylan eras rolled into one, exploring themes of Christianity, morality, family and fractured relationships. The meditative “What’s a Man” deals with some age-old questions related to masculinity (“What’s a man to do without a woman to break his heart/what’s a man to prove without a woman to wrench his brain apart”), with an awesome, horn-laden outro to boot. “Jacob” is a beautiful pseudo-hymn ostensibly referencing the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, and “Oh God” wrestles with faith in the wake of tragedy. The album’s strengths lie in its simple presentation and imperfections; from the rawness and clutter come moments of utter clarity. -

The "blank generation" came out of a moral vacuum. While punks roamed the suburban landscape, blue-collar workers were feeling the pinch of an economic revolution: human society had left the industrial age and entered the post-industrial age, the age in which services (such as software) prevail over manufacturing. Computers now rule the world, from Wall Street to Boeing. The assembly line took away a bit of the personality of the worker, but that was nothing: the new service- based economy takes away the worker completely, physically. In the post-industrial society the individual is even less of a "person". The individual is merely a cog in a huge organism of interconnected parts that works at the beat of a gigantic network of computers. This highly sophisticated economy treats the individual as a number, as a statistic. The goal is no longer to create a robot that behaves like a human being, but to create a human being that behaves like a robot: robots are efficient and lead to manageable and profitable businesses, whereas humans are inefficient and difficult to manage. -

Over 400 guests were in attendance at the lavish black-tie affair. December greens, such as laurel, balsam and pine, decorated the nineteenth century mansion's arches, bannisters and sconces, reflecting this year's Victorian theme. Centerpieces of boxwood, decorated with gold ribbons, miniature lights, and white porcelain cherub ornaments, adorned each table at the Ball. The centerpieces and ornaments were given to the guests at evening's end as mementos. The $60,000 raised was the most in the event's nine year history. The donations from the Ball supplement Salve's scholarship monies which are awarded to deserving students. -
