Cox, Professor, Library and Information Science ii Copyright © by James King 2018 iii THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES: ARCHIVAL APPROACHES TO CIVIL RIGHTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND AND THE AMERICAN SOUTH James King, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2018 When police and counter-protesters broke up the first march of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) in August 1968, activists sang the African American spiritual, “We Shall Overcome” before disbanding. The spiritual, so closely associated with the earlier civil rights struggle in the United States, was indicative of the historical and material links shared by the movements in Northern Ireland and the American South. While these bonds have been well documented within history and media studies, the relationship between these regions’ archived materials and contemporary struggles remains largely unexplored. While some artifacts from the movements—along with the oral histories and other materials that came later—remained firmly ensconced within the archive, others have been digitally reformatted or otherwise repurposed for a range of educational, judicial, and social projects. -

(Seamus Heaney, ‘The Cure at Troy’) The question is: whose history? ii Abstract In the wake of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which brought an end to 30 years of conflict in Northern Ireland, the province became a ‘place of pilgrimage’ for people from other conflict zones in search of lessons and answers. This thesis revisits Northern Ireland’s lessons from a multidisciplinary and 21st-century perspective; it contends that to make sense of and resolve a conflict in a sustainable way, you have to not only under- stand it through substantive lenses, but also through emotional and behavioural ones – and likewise understand the interconnectedness between those lenses. It identifies relational and deep-seated themes common to other conflicts (like Israel-Palestine): de- monization, a siege mentality, the historical context of rifts in the relationship. Northern Ireland offered images of hope when former arch-enemies entered government together in 2007; yet this thesis shows that, in spite of political and social transformation, there is still too much societal psychological trauma, and too many unspoken, legacy- and identity-based blockers in the relationship to speak of a conflict resolution. -

Preface I am proud to present my bachelor thesis on the influence of the peace lines on the sense of place and identity in West-Belfast. With this thesis, my bachelor Human Geography, Planning and Environmental studies at the Radboud University Nijmegen comes to an end. It was in this bachelor that I got to know Belfast from a human geographical perspective. Working on an assignment regarding Belfast triggered a fascination within me. This fascination was the reason why I decided to complete an in-depth case study research on this extraordinary city. Conducting the fieldwork in Belfast by myself was an amazing experience. Going to an unknown city by myself to interview people on a sensitive matter made me both excited and nervous. Luckily, all went well and I had a wonderful experience in Belfast. Getting to know a city from literature and then actually being in the research field has been most exciting. I would not have been able to finish this bachelor thesis by myself. -

It explores the effects of partition on the notions of space and identity in Ireland, as well as how it affected the notion of a state under siege. Drawing on the largely untapped material in the British Postal Museum Archives, cabinet papers, parliamentary debates and local and national newspapers, it aims to contribute to current historiography of Northern Ireland and Ulster unionism in the 1920s by looking at the ways local and sectional interests affected official policy, its attitudes to the Irish Free State and partition, and the more tangential debate concerning both 2 unionist and nationalist perceptions of Northern Ireland’s identity. -

Ritual Contention in Divided Societies: Participation in Loyalist Parades! in Northern Ireland Jonathan !S. Blake ! Each year, Protestant organizations in Northern Ireland perform over 2,500 ritual parades to celebrate and commemorate their culture. Many Catholics, however, see parades as triumphalist and hateful. As a result, parades undermine the political peace process and grassroots peace- building by raising interethnic tension and precipitating riots, including significant violence in recent years. This dissertation asks: Why do people participate in these parades? To answer this question, I consider loyalist parading as an example of contentious ritual —symbolic action that makes contested political claims. To understand these parades as ritual actions, I build on two central insights from religious studies, sociology, and anthropology. First, as meaningful and shared practices, rituals provide participants with benefits that are intrinsic to participating in the act itself and do not depend on the achievement of some external outcome. A HISTORY OF THE BELFAST CITY HOSPITAL by DAVID H. CRAIG, F.R.C.S.(Ed.), F.R.C.S.(I.) Presidential Address to Ulster Medical Society, Session 1973-1974 THIS IS A STORY about a town that grew into a city, a Board of Guardians, and a hospital that was not wanted, certainly not to begin with by the Poor Law Commissioners in Dublin, who protested most strongly that they did not want their Workhouse to become a hospital. It all began in 1838, one hundred and thirty five years ago, when an Act of Parliament - The Irish Poor Law Relief Act - was passed to provide for the building of Workhouses in Ireland, and to create Boards of Guardians to supervise their running. Our Workhouse opened on 11th May 1841. It cost £7,000 and had taken two years to build. It was planned to admit about 1,000 inmates, and it was not ready any too soon. The Board of Guardians appointed to supervise the running of the Workhouse were all very worthy and prominent citizens. But the Workhouse was not a very socially acceptable, object for good works in Victorian times; a bit smelly and a bit dirty, I expect, and a lot of undeserving poor about it. Anyway no carriages rolled up the drive with ladies in crinolines forming Ladies' Committees. No business magnates left the Workhouse any money. Nobody cared very much about it at all. Except of course the Board of Guardians. I think they quite enjoyed being on the Board. They seemed to have had plenty to talk about at their meetings.
