Contents: 1.Visit Japan's first colors of autumn‒ Asahidake 2. Good to visit in autumn! Furano&Biei 1.Visit Japan's first colors of autumn ‒ Asahidake Where is the first place in Japan to see autumn colors? The answer is the Daisetsuzan National Park, which is located in the middle of Hokkaido with the colors of leaves starting to change in early September. Daisetsuzan National Park is the largest national park in Japan with a total area of 230,000 hactares , including Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido. The easy way to enjoy the spectacular nature landscape is to take the Asahidake Ropeway. Start the journey from Sapporo station, you can take a JR Limited Express train bound for Asahikawa with the riding time of only 1 hour and 25 minutes. Then transfer to the bus from Asahikawa station to the entrance of Asahidake Ropeway called “Sanroku station”. Here you ride the Asahidake Ropeway for about 10 minutes to get to Sugatami Station at 1600 m above sea level. After getting off the ropeway, there is a 1-hour exploration path available where you can enjoy the landscape view of Daisetsuzan mountains from observation points and also visit nature spots like Sugatami Pond and Meoto Pond. When visiting Sugatami Station, wearing shoes (ex. sport shoes) that let you move easily and comfortably is recommended. In case of rapid changes of weather in the mountain, bringing warm clothes and rain gear is also suggested. Recommended route Ltd. Exp. Lilac No.5 Bus Asahidake ropeway Mt. JRHokkaido Mail Magazine 2.Good to visit in autumn! Furano&Biei After the colorful flower season, it turns to harvest season in Furano and Biei area. Brown-colored hills and yellow-tinged trees are very reminiscent of autumn, the pastoral scenery extends covering all the fields. We especially recommend visiting “Blue pond” and “Shikisai-no-oka”. The forest trees surrounding “Blue pond” turn to autumn color, where you can enjoy a totally different landscape from summer. Also you can visit the panoramic flower field in ”Shikisai-no-oka” until the end of October. After the summer peak season, without tourist crowds you can relax with a change in peace and enjoy your time in Furano and Biei. When visiting “Blue pond” and “Shikisai-no-oka”, it is convenient to take the “Flower Fields and Blue Pond course” of “Biei View Bus” from Biei station. ASAHIKAWA Info August 2013 VOL. 201 Published by AIC Also visit us at: http://asahikawaic.jp/en/ August 2013 Compiled by TAKADA Nobuhiro June 19 The town of Ikeda in Tokachi celebrated the 50th anniversary of “Tokachi Wine.” The town close to Obihiro has played a pioneering role in growing grapevines and producing wine among municipalities since the 1960s. The mayor at the time decided to start a winery industry to increase income among farmers and improve the town’s budget balance after the Tokachi Earthquake in 1952 and poor harvests caused by cold weather in 1953 and 1954. June 25 Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory gave a weather forecast for this summer in Hokkaido. According to the forecast, temperatures from July to September will tend to be higher than average, and rainfall will be average in July but lower in August and September than a normal year. However, this summer is unlikely to be as hot as the one in 2010, which had a long period of scorching hot weather. July 7 “Mori no Hanazono” (a flower garden in the woods) opened in Asahigaoka district in the town of Kamikawa. The garden is filled with alpine plants, various roses and local flowers, and also has the “Garden Café” providing specialties such as curry and rice, hot dogs, soft- serve ice cream and more. The 5,000-square-meter flower garden is a part of the 35,000-square-meter “Taisetsu Mori no Garden” (a garden in the woods at the foot of Mt. Taisetsu), which is scheduled to open next spring.

  • Ainu Ethnobiology
Williams Ainu Ethnobiology In the last 20 years there has been an increasing focus on study of Ainu culture in Japan, the United States, and in Europe. is has resulted in a number of major exhibitions and publications such as “Ainu, Spirit of a Northern People” published in 1999 by the Ainu Ethnobiology Smithsonian and the University of Washington Press. While such e orts have greatly enhanced our general knowledge of the Ainu, they did not allow for a full understanding of the way in which the Ainu regarded and used plants and animals in their daily life. is study aims at expanding our knowledge of ethnobiology as a central component of Ainu culture. It is based in large part on an analysis of the work of Ainu, Japanese, and Western researchers working in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Ainu Ethnobiology Dai Williams was born in Lincoln, England in 1941. He received a BA in Geography and Anthropology from Oxford University in 1964 and a MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. He spent the majority of his career in city and regional planning. His cultural research began through museum involvement in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based in Kyoto from 1989, he began research on the production and use of textiles in 19th century rural Japan. His research on the Ainu began in 1997 but primarily took place in Hokkaido between 2005 and 2009. Fieldwork focused on several areas of Hokkaido, like the Saru River Basin and the Shiretoko Peninsula, which the Ainu once occupied.
