Our objectives were to describe the changing management environment, identify the related challenges and the information required to address them, and provide an example of a relational database to facilitate a robust understanding of the demands aircrew training makes on ranges and airspace. The technical data and details outlined in the appendixes focus on activities to collect, review, and update Air Force operational flight training data sets first provided in a relational database that RAND and Air Combat Command (ACC) developed several years ago. We expanded the data sets to include training programs that Air Force Special Operations Com- mand (AFSOC), Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and Air Mobility Com- mand (AMC) administer. The compact disk supplies the updated decision tool. The data sets establish standard maneuver parameters for training activity that can be used by units in building training sorties and by range managers and other program managers in understand- ing the training demand on test and training ranges and special-use airspace in the United States and overseas. This report is intended to inform strategic planners, programmers, operational train- ing managers and instructors, and users of air and space training infrastructure capabilities. Because the research discusses the relationship between combatant commanders’ warfighting requirements and the range and airspace infrastructure needed to supply them, it should be of interest to Air Force operators, those who employ air and space forces, and anyone involved with developing or training air and space crews, including those in the air reserve component. It will also be of interest to those in the Department of the Air Force who must advocate for and defend range and airspace access before public and private entities. This is one in a series of RAND reports that addresses improving the Air Force’s ability to connect operational requirements to advanced training and its supporting infrastructure by making these relationships more explicit.     War Dog Memorial Dedicated At Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony By ASHLEY BOUWENSE News View Media Group 4:39 p.m. June 5, 2016 edited MOUNT OLIVE - The All Veterans Memorial at Turkey Brook Park in Budd Lake held its annual Memorial Remembrance program on Monday May 30, 2016. The Memorial’s latest addition, the War Dog Memorial, was dedicated during the program, retired U.S. Army Corporal and war dog handler William “Bill” Wynne, gave the keynote address. The day began at 10:30 a.m. with the dedication at the War Dog Memorial, where five war dog statues donning detailed characteristics of the original war hero and the landscape they served gave onlookers a realistic feel of the setting. Each dog was presented with his/her own specific dedication. At the end of each dedication, Ron Aiello, President of the U.S. War Dog Association awarded each canine with the War Dog Medal of Honor for their heroic service. The unique memorial depicts the landscape of five different theatre wars; five different breeds of canines assigned to five various missions. Sergeant Stubby, a bull dog, terrier mix was the first official U.S. War Dog that served in WWI; Smoky, a 4 lbs Yorkshire terrier from WWII was the first documented U.S. therapy dog and Australia’s first war dog; an unnamed Doberman Pincer who represents all the undocumented fallen canine heroes served in the Korean War; Nemo, a German Shepherd that served in Vietnam; and of course Gabe, a yellow lab IED detection war dog who served many tours during the Global War on Terror.

    Sydney Kirchenheiter Mr. Brant U. S. History 27 April 2018 Military Working Dogs: Impact on War and Handlers Over hundreds of years warfare tactics have continued to evolve and improve. From spears, to guns, to bombs, to nuclear weapons. These weapons are the deciding factor of outcomes of wars. Win or lose. Life or death. Military working dogs (MWDs), first used by the United States in World War I, are an example of this evolved and improved warfare. Sometimes these dogs are considered more useful than their handlers or other soldiers because of their heightened senses, tracking ability, loyalty, and ability to go where a soldier cannot. MWDs have served as companions and heroes to soldiers during war and post war, and may have even ultimately impacted the outcomes of wars, such as WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War. MWDs have taken on a number of roles and duties since they were first introduced in WWI. Single Purpose Dogs have one purpose, to sniff out explosives or narcotics. These typically consist of the sporting breeds like, retrievers, vizslas, short/wired hair pointers, Jack Russell terriers, and small poodles.1 Dual-purpose dogs—which are typically German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, or Dutch Shepherds—perform patrol/detection work and basic scouting. Multi purpose canines, on the other hand, have multiple abilities: sniff out bombs, do patrol work, scouting, and even go on parachute/rappel operations.2 Other dogs typically specialize in one 1 Goodavage, Soldier Dogs, 56. 2 ibid., p. 55 area. A grenade killed Sgt. Gander. He grabbed it and ran, taking it away from his men. It took his life when it exploded, but his action saved many. The book Sergeant Gander: A Canadian Hero, by St. Thomas' own Robyn Walker, is called "a fascinating account of the Royal Rifles of Canada's canine mascot, and his devotion to duty during the Battle of Hong Kong in the Second World War." Intended for children, it is very informative for anyone interested in Newfoundland dogs, Newfoundland or Canada's role in WWII. Bill and I met at a McDonald’s alongside an interstate. He told me story after story about his life, from living in an orphanage, to fighting in the war, working at NACA (now NASA), and his life as a photojournalist. I told him his story was much bigger than just the dog and the war story, although Smoky is the story within the story. This clever canine had become a war-dog hero, and most likely saved many lives. And, according to Animal Planet, Smoky is credited with being the first therapy dog. Bill believes that Smoky brought out the best in him and he brought out the best in her. To- gether, Bill and Smoky lifted the spirits of the sick and wounded in military hospitals, and when they returned to civilian life, they contin- ued to visit hospitals and orphanages.

    Celebrating the Human Animal Bond On Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The donkey was the animal chosen by Army Commanders back then when opposing sides met to sign a peace treaty. In choosing a donkey Jesus was declaring peace for the world on behalf of God. Domesticated animals have shared the lives of the human race for thousands of years. Dogs were domesticated about 15000 years ago. Since then they have complimented our lives first as hunting partners, livestock herders, protectors and companions. Today the role of dogs has expanded to include guiding the blind and assisting the deaf and disabled, contributing to our safety at airports and assisting police and the armed forces, diagnosing cancer, as therapy dogs for PTSD and probably most importantly as companions. I am interested in the roles that animals served in WWI &II. and since we are close to Remembrance Day and spend a few minutes sharing some stories with you. Horses, mules and donkeys have served us in agriculture and transportation for centuries. Unfortunately, they have been conscripted for cavalry service in war for hundreds of years. In WWI their role as part of cavalries diminished and they were used more to pull wagons, artillery or ambulances often under hellish conditions. Imagine for a second the trauma experienced by a horse raised on a peaceful farm. On the battlefield they endured the horror of the sounds and smells of war. It is estimated that over 8 million horses mules or donkeys were killed in WWI. Dogs pigeons, cats, camels and elephants were also used by the armies in WWI.

    WILLIAM ‘BILL’ A. WYNNE William "Bill" A. Wynne is an American author, decorated World War II veteran, dog trainer, photographer, award winning photojournalist, and community advocate. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Martin A. and Beatrice Caffrey Wynne, Bill grew up in Cleveland Ohio. He was married to Margaret Roberts Wynne on September 28, 1946 and they remained married for over 57 years until the time of her death, in 2004. Together they had and raised nine children. So far, they have twenty-seven grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren. Bill graduated from West Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio specializing in horticulture and photography. Bill graduated from the USAAF in Lowry Field, Colorado as a photo lab technician. Bill a World War II decorated veteran served 24 months collectively in New Guinea, Biak Island, Luzon, Okinawa, and Korea with the 26th Photo Recon Squadron and the 6th Photo Recon Group. His service began on January 12, 1943 and ended with an honorable discharge on November 27, 1945. Bill was awarded two U.S. Presidential Unit Citations and eight Battle Stars. As aerial photographer, he flew 13 combat missions with the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron from Biak Island to Ceram, Halmahera, Celebes, Borneo, and Mindanao between September and December 1944. With the 26th Photo Recon Squadron he also worked as a lab technician and as a camera installer on F-5 Lightning reconnaissance planes. The project is twofold in nature. First, I examine the rise of Japanese-language literature by Korean colonial subjects in the late 1930s and early 1940s, reassessing the sociopolitical factors involved in the production and consumption of these texts. Second, I trace how postwar reconstructions of ethnic nationality gave rise to the specific genre of zainichi (lit. “residing in Japan”) literature. By situating these two valences together, I attempt to highlight the continuities among the established fields of colonial-period literature, modern Japanese literature, and modern Korean literature. Included in my analyses is a consideration of literature written by Japanese writers in Korea, transnational media and publishing culture in East Asia, the gender politics of national language, and the ways in which kōminka (imperialization) policies were neither limited to the colonized alone nor completely erased after 1945. Rather than view the boundaries between “Japanese” and “Korean” literature as fixed or self-evident, this study examines the historical construction of these categories as generative discourses embedded in specific social, material, and political conditions.
