THE STATUS OF THE BREED Pat Jacobberger presented the results of an analysis of the status of Burmese in terms of the numbers entered in shows (reproduced elsewhere in this Newsletter). This analysis shows that there has been a steady decline of Burmese in CFA shows since the start of the decade.

SHOW BUSINESS • There will not be a NABB show in 1997. 3 • Lynn Thompson is looking into putting a show together in 1998 in the Summer, 1997 Tampa area in Florida. Therefore, the Petition appears to be a misrepresentation in her case. Mrs. Schmidt, International Division Burmese Standard. during a telephone discussion on July 15, 1997, confirmed the above. Rather than being a petitioner for outcrossing, she is assessing her options for becoming a breeder of European Sincerely, Burmese that conform to the existing CFA standard. /s/ Ebe C. McCabe, Jr., Spokesperson • Another identified petitioner, Heather McCullough, also averred, during a July 15, 1997 copy: CFA Directors telephone call, that her name had been used on the Petition without her knowledge or A. DeVoe, Bodyguard's Cattery permission, and that she did not support the Petition or use of the CFA Burmese breed as an K. Ghobrial, Bes Cattery outcross breed. She further stated that, when she found out about the mixed parentage of her C. Hasselblad European Burmese, she had them all neutered/spayed and petted them out. In addition, she stated L. Keim, Bijoux Cattery that she was not now interested in breeding European Burmese, but would stick with her J. McCabe, SoJoy Cattery Tonkinese, at least until this issue is settled, and that her experience had been an expensive one. H. McCullough C. Schmidt, Tonkatykes & Eurotykes Catteries • Communications with another of the listed petitioners, before receiving a copy of the Petition, P. Swihart, Charm Cattery W. Trevathan, Trebar & Bondi Catteries indicated a strong aversion to outcrossing to contemporary Burmese. Outcrossing to CFA Burmese would certainly allow that, and would have a severe adverse impact on the availability of breeding stock from other countries. And, the breeders on whose part this letter is submitted are strongly opposed to any outcrossing of the CFA European Burmese.

The preceding and the apparent absence of the signature of the individual petitioners, or of their spokesperson, place the authenticity of the Petition very much in doubt. We understand that CFA will identify the CFA breeders named in the Petition, send them each a copy of the Petition, and ask in writing that they confirm or deny, in writing, whether they were party to the Petition and support its provisions. That will, we feel, place the Petition in proper perspective. We are concerned that there may have been intentional gulling of breeders who submitted mixed parentage registrations to CFA. When the widespread aversion to the Petition's unacceptable outcrossing provision is also considered, it seems important to assess whether there has been a deliberate attempt to sabotage the European Burmese breed. Therefore, we request that the individuals listed in the Petition, and those who submitted registrations of prohibited parentage cats as CFA European Burmese, also be asked to specify in writing, to the best of their knowledge: (1) the name of each individual they authorized to use their name as a petitioner, and (2) the names of the persons who 10 National Alliance of Burmese Breeders, Inc. 11 (On Campaigning a Burmese - Continued from Page 10) Summer, 1997 The weekends spent on the road that year were some of the most productive and relaxing times I've had in years. I had just started a new and challenging job. More stressful for me was the gradual decline of a close personal friend with Cystic New Quarantine Law in Hawaii Fibrosis. The shows were a break in my routine and a way to escape into a simple world of friends and laughter and fun. I filled the hours of driving by listening to tapes of best selling books. The evenings in hotel rooms were occupied with long The island state of Hawaii has recently baths, bad food and trashy novels. Looking back and reflecting, I realize that those changed their quarantine laws by reducing weekends were my salvation. the length of the quarantine from 120 days to 30 days. In order to qualify for the 30- I learned that people who campaign a cat are a group with a common goal. We all day quarantine: shared each other‘s wins and losses. I learned that it was just as important to win graciously as it was to take Meggie‘s losses graciously. At one point, when Meggie was having a not-so- 2. (I entered my mother's SINGAPURA, GP Jubilation Poco Kokomo of official State of Hawaii-issued microchip Ansata , showed her in every ring and she outscored my Burm a couple of times.) to qualify for 30-day quarantine. No exceptions! Meggie didn‘t make it to 100 rings. I gave up at 88. She had a secure spot in the region and she was getting sassy. I couldn't bear to pull her out from underneath hotel room beds and have her run away from me at home if she had the slightest inkling that it was bath time. She was tired and so I let her stay home.

1995-96 was a year where joys were given out to me in very small portions - most usually in the form of a friend at a show. Looking back, I realize that my prayers for peace of mind were answered ever so subtly in the form of the exquisite brown angel who sat on my lap week after week. Funny that it took me months to figure out that God works in quiet ways.

Perhaps from the outside looking in, a cat show appears to be rather silly . . . a beauty contest for cats. But during that secluded 48 hour period we have the opportunity to escape into a time capsule of sorts - a splendid place where the harshness of the world around us is secondary. I realize how fortunate I am to have a hobby that provides the chance to be with people who make me laugh. In the years to come I may very well forget what award happened where, but I will never forget the fun I had and the lifelong friendships that were cultivated.

Recently another beautiful BURM girl I received from Michele Clark ( GC Anoka Shady Lady of Ansata ) - Meggie‘s mom - completed her grand Premiership. She is even prettier than her daughter and happier about going to the shows. Friends keep asking me if I'm considering another campaign. I admit, it is tempting. If the stress of the world starts to creep up on me I'll consider it. I shouldn't be hard to recognize: just look for a gal with a red and white checked jumper and a red bandana in her hair.

20 National Alliance of Burmese Breeders, Inc.

here are a number of registries in the world that recognize the Burmese for registration and championship status. Two women involved in breeding Burmese - Gail Francois and Alenka Unk - put together the following chart comparing and contrasting the standards of four associations - CFA, FIFe, TICA and the RSA. They did a beautiful job and you can view their work in real time by visiting the following Web Site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8454/burmsop.html

There is too much to do in one issue of the Newsletter so a portion will be presented each quarter.

I. GENERAL

Association Description

CFA The overall impression of the ideal Burmese would be a cat of medium size with substantial bone structure, good muscular development and a surprising weight for its size. This together with a rounded head, expressive eyes and a sweet expression presents a totally distinctive cat which is comparable to no other breed. Perfect physical condition, with excellent muscle tone. There should be no evidence of obesity, paunchiness, weakness, or apathy.

CFA The European Burmese is an elegant cat of foreign type, which is positive and individual to the breed. European Any suggestion of either Siamese type or the cobbiness of the must be regarded as a fault.

FIFe The Burmese distinguishes itself as an independent breed by its unique genetics of colour (cb cb). Striking characteristics of this lively breed are its silky coat texture as well as their expressive eyes. It is a medium-sized, elegant cat of oriental origin. Any suggestion of either Siamese type or the cobbiness of the British must be regarded as a fault.

TICA The overall impression of the ideal Burmese would be a cat of medium size And rich solid colour with substantial bone structure, good muscular development and a surprising weight for its size. This, together with its expressive eyes and sweet face, presents a totally distinctive cat which is comparable to no other breed.

RSA The Burmese is classified as a 'foreign' breed and is described as an elegant cat with a glossy coat which (South Africa) is a distinct feature of the breed.

From clothesline post up Spearfish way Yet with a pluck that did not cease, To fence in Hot Springs. THE CAT PIONEERS That kept aloft each tail, No more important episode They bravely risked nine lives apiece Marked all those early years Along the Black Hills trail. Than that historic wagonload by Badger Clark Of feline pioneers, Poet Laureate of South Dakota. When Deadwood town at last they made For though the horse and dog were prized Their welcome was not cold, And praised for this and that, Known as the "Cowboy Poet." Ten dollars each of them was paid Who made the Black Hills civilized? 1883-1957 In glittering dust of gold, The cat, my friend, the cat! And they were drafted to afford The dark was deep on hill and vale The homesick miners cheer I am the old breed down to date And I inclined to snore Or Guard the grocers precious hoard For in that wagon's straw When I responded to a hail Bull-freighted out from Pierre. Rode my great-great-great-great-great Outside my cabin door, Great-great-great-grandmaw and paw. And in there stalked from outer gloom Those rovers I'm descended from A stately Thomas cat One talented young tiger tom And their blood rules me yet, As black as Wind Cave's deepest room, Whose voice could charm the moon For thought I am a gentletom With jaunty white cravat. I'll be no household .

I bowed and, all impressed to see Along beneath mystic dark His grooming sleek as silk, I raid the pack rat's den With Western hospitality And range the woods of Custer park Offered a drink -- of milk. And shun the haunts of men, He licked his chops with mien demure So, pardner, you and I are peers And the silence broke. And ere I leave you now, (I may have dozed, and yet I'm sure We'll give three cheers for pioneers. That lordly Thomas spoke.) Meeyow, meeyow, meeyow..

"Your garb, sir, and your rude life here In this sequestered heaven Are like those of a pioneer of Eighteen-Seventy-Seven. Forgot the teachings of his mom That year of cats! That year of fame! And worked in a saloon. Of Deathless memory! There with a dissipated bunch When fifty cats to Deadwood came Who swilled their midnight grogs, From old Bismark D.T. He lapped up Tom and Jerry punch Till he went to the dogs. Ah, they were cats who feared no fate, Cats of adventurous blood, But most soon won an honored place Real Western cats who'd emigrate And raised the social tone Through hardships, fight and flood, By that serene and subtle grace Steamboating cats who voyaged far Peculiarly our own. To reach that river port And swiftly grew their family trees, And trim and swagger cats of war For cats believe and dealt Who served about the fort. In large and frequent families Four hundred miles by plain and slope Long before Roosevelt. They rode through dust and heat, The hairy miner on a spree, Full of remorse and beer, Gazed at a kitten on his knee And shed a scalding tear, Then vowed to quit the maddening cup And mend his ragged life And get a shave and straighten up And send and fetch his wife.

Thus were the wild Hills gentled, sir; The wanderers ceased to roam And round a cat's contented Built many a happy home, And soon the Black Hills' nights were gay 23 Summer, 1997

41 BURMESE SHOW STATISTICS Summer, 1997 Compiled from CFA Data

Graph One, directly to the left shows that there has been a Burmese Entries significant decline in the number Burmese cats entered in CFA shows over the past several years. Not only is this decline evident in CFA Shows by reviewing the volume of Burmese show entries, it is also apparent when the Burmese entries are compared and contrasted to 1000 the overall numbers of entries (refer to the Graph Two). There are 800 very likely, a number of reasons for this. 600 400 The first that comes to mind is the head deformity. There were, at one time, many more Burmese breeders than today. In the 200 Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area, there were 10 Burmese breeders in 0 1991-9 1992-9 1993-9 1994-9 1995-9 1975. Today, there are 4. Many breeders left breeding altogether long before the head defect became apparent because of the financial and emotional distress of being faced with —re-tooling“ of their Graph One breeding programs. Certainly, some breeders left the Burmese fancy because of it. The question that still needs to be answered is, Burmese Entries as a are there fewer Burmese shown because there are fewer bred or because of economic, personal and competitive disadvantages or as Percentage of Total Entries a result of other factors?

1.20% There are other contributing factors, as well. For example, the 1.00% 0.80% steady increase in the number of breeds recognized for 0.60% championship status over the past 15 years has presented the 0.40% newcomer with a larger variety of breeds from which to select. The 0.20% number of long hair breeds has stayed relatively stable while the 0.00% number of short hair breeds has steadily risen. Dilute Burmese Entered In any event, there is a significant decrease in the number of sables and a small increase in the numbers 800 of dilutes over the last few years. And, the numbers of 600 dilute and sable entries are coming closer to one 400 another as you can see in Graph Four.

200 This begs the question, —Is it time to bring the two 0 divisions of the Burmese together?“ The question 1991-92 1992-93 1993-94 1994-95 1995-96 will appear on the November, 1997 Burmese Breed Council Ballot. Sable Dilute
