'\ 1 4 JAN 1997 i JAMES WILLIAM HELENUS TRAIL: A BRITISH NATURALIST IN NINETEENTH -CENTURY AMAZONIA by Magali Romero Sa ABSTRACT In 1873, the British naturalist James William Helenus Trail (1851-1919) participated in the first authorized foreign commercial expedition to the Brazilian Amazon region. The exploratory mission was promoted by the "Amazon Steam Navigation Company", a British company which intended to exploit its lands in the valley of the Amazon River. Trail was commissioned to evaluate the potential of the area for timber exploitation, and to indicate additional profitable natural resources. Trail spent 17 months surveying the Amazon River and tributaries, having explored an area which extends westwards from the city of Belem to the Brazilian border with Peru. The effective logistic support provided by the Company allowed him to collect botanical and zoological material in areas not visited before by other naturalists. Trail's collections, particularly those of plants and insects, were much praised by the various specialists who studied them and who, as a tribute to Trail, named 34 newtaxa after him. When in Amazonia, Trail met the Brazilian botanist Barbosa Rodrigues, who called his attention to the diversity of Amazonian palms. Inspired by Rodrigues, Trail developed a keen interest in palm taxonomy, having described 20 new species from the copious material he collected in the region. Trail's new taxa, however, generated protests from Barbosa Rodrigues, who claimed for himself the authorship of some of the species. Trail's trip to Amazonia boosted his career in natural history, and established early in his life his reputation among the British scientific community. His Amazonian collections - which include, among others groups, nearly 1,800 plant and 2,100 insect species -, together with his field observations, represent a most relevant, though largely overlooked, contribution to the historical process of the knowledge of the natural history of the region. Josiane Kunzler * Antonio Carlos Sequeira Fernandes # Vera Maria Medina da Fonseca § Samia Jraige $ Resumo : Na segunda metade do século XIX, o naturalista norte-americano Herbert Hun- tington Smith (1851-1919) realizou expedições ao Brasil que resultaram na aquisição de cerca de 250.000 exemplares de história natural. Sua viagem mais importante deu-se, entre- tanto, entre os anos de 1882 a 1886. Contratado pelo Museu Nacional em fins de 1881, percorreu diversos estados brasileiros, finalmente permanecendo na região da Chapada dos Guimarães, onde coletou vários exemplares de répteis, aves, mamíferos e insetos, além de amostras petrográficas e fossilíferas. Por força de contrato, Smith organizou coleções sepa- radas, sendo uma para remessa ao Museu Nacional e, outra, para seu uso particular. Análi- ses dos documentos presentes na instituição revelam em grande parte o cumprimento do contrato pelo naturalista, a exceção da enorme coleção de insetos. Devido à falta de recur- sos ao final do contrato, Smith foi autorizado pelo diretor da época a retornar aos Estados Unidos com toda a coleção de insetos, onde procederia a separação dos exemplares, retor- nando ao museu os exemplares que lhe pertencessem. O não cumprimento dessa promessa resultou em protestos significativos posteriores, qualificando-o como indivíduo de idonei- dade moral duvidosa. A análise da documentação existente permite duvidar dessa qualifica- ção, face à grande contribuição que Smith deu ao acervo da instituição. Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history.

    Species delimitation and hybrid identification of Acrocomia aculeata and A. totai by genetic population approach Brenda D´ıaz1, Maria Zucchi2, Alessandro Alves-Pereira1, Joaquim Azevedo-Filho2, Mariana Sanit´a2, and Carlos Colombo2 1State University of Campinas 2Instituto Agronomico October 9, 2020 Abstract To the Neotropical genus Acrocomia (Arecaceae) is attributed eight species with a wide distribution in America. A. aculeata and A. totai are the most important species because of their high economic potential for oil production. However, there is no consensus in their classification as different taxons and their distinctiveness is particularly challenging due to morphological similarities with large plasticity of the traits. In addition, there is doubt about the occurrence of interspecific hybrids between both species. In this study, we applied a genetic population approach to assessing the genetic boundaries, diversity and to identify interspecific hybrids of A. aculeata and A. totai. Thirteen loci of simple sequence repeat (SSR) were employed to analyze twelve populations representing a wide distribution of species, from Minas Gerais, Brazil to Formosa, Argentina. Based on the Bayesian analysis (STRUCTURE and NewHybrids) and Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components (DAPC), our study supports the recognition of A. aculeata and A. totai as two species and the estimates of genetic parameters revealed more genetic diversity in A. totai (HE=0.551) than in A. aculeata (HE=0.466). We obtained evidence of hybridization between the species and that admixed individuals were assigned as F2 hybrids. In conclusion, this study showed the usefulness of microsatellite markers to elucidate the genetic boundaries of A. aculeata and A. totai, supporting their classification as different species and increase our knowledge about genetic diversity at the level of populations and species.

This understory species is endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. We followed 102 plants for two years and found that G. epetiolata is monoecious and protandrous. Flowering duration at the inflorescence level is three to six months for the male phase and two to three weeks for the female phase; this is one the most extended flowering periods reported for palms. Flowering in this palm is continuous throughout the year, both at the individual and population level. This long and continuous flowering pattern may represent an adaptation to increase the chances of reproduction in a environment of high and unpredictable rainfall. The species is self-compatible, hut self-pollination is possible only when there is overlap of male and female inflorescences (38% of the cases). Only 28 percent of the stigmas of 1020 flowers received pollen grains and 20 percent developed pollen tubes in the styles. Of all the flowers produced by an inflorescence, I4 percent initiated fruit development but only 3 percent develop into mature fruits. Seventy-six percent of the initiated fruits were aborted.
