Christian Women and the Making of a Modern Chinese Family: an Exploration of Nü duo 女鐸, 1912–1951 Zhou Yun A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University February 2019 © Copyright by Zhou Yun 2019 All Rights Reserved Except where otherwise acknowledged, this thesis is my own original work. Acknowledgements I would like to express my deep gratitude to my supervisor Dr. Benjamin Penny for his valuable suggestions and constant patience throughout my five years at The Australian National University (ANU). His invitation to study for a Doctorate at Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) not only made this project possible but also kindled my academic pursuit of the history of Christianity. Coming from a research background of contemporary Christian movements among diaspora Chinese, I realise that an appreciation of the present cannot be fully achieved without a thorough study of the past. I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to research the Republican era and in particular the development of Christianity among Chinese women. I wish to thank my two co-advisers—Dr. Wei Shuge and Dr. Zhu Yujie—for their time and guidance. Shuge’s advice has been especially helpful in the development of my thesis. Her honest critiques and insightful suggestions demonstrated how to conduct conscientious scholarship. I would also like to extend my thanks to friends and colleagues who helped me with my research in various ways. Special thanks to Dr. Caroline Stevenson for her great proof reading skills and Dr. Paul Farrelly for his time in checking the revised parts of my thesis.

  • Pipa Virtuoso Fang Leads WSO Back to Classics
Print Story - canada.com network Page 1 of 2 Saturday » February 16 » 2008 Pipa virtuoso Fang leads WSO back to classics Ted Shaw The Windsor Star Sunday, February 10, 2008 It was back to the classics Saturday for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, but the spirit of the recent Windsor Canadian Music Festival lingered in a contemporary Chinese work. WCMF unveils new Canadian compositions with often unconventional or experimental instrumentation. While Tan Dun's Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa is not Canadian, it was performed by Montreal-based pipa virtuoso, Liu Fang, and called upon the string players to beat the tops of their instruments at times and shout Chinese words. It was particularly striking in the context of the rest of the program of works written before the first decade of the 19th century. CREDIT: Scott Webster, The Windsor Star Pipa player Liu Fang performs with the Windsor Chinese-born Tan Dun is the Grammy and Oscar-winning Symphony Orchestra Saturday night. composer of such film soundtracks as Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. His use of traditional Chinese instruments in the context of Western musical idioms has earned him a special place among the new generation of composers living in the United States. His pipa concerto is classically structured and borrows liberally from the concerto tradition, including having a cadenza. But the instrument itself is decidedly exotic in sound. Pear-shaped like a lute but lacking a sound hole, the pipa has a percussive quality and is plucked with plectrums, although there is a considerable amount of chord work and strumming involved, as well.

The University of Texas at Austin, 2015 Supervisor: Huaiyin Li This work is a modern history of Changsha, the capital city of Hunan province, from the late nineteenth to mid twentieth centuries. The story begins by discussing a battle that occurred in the city during the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), a civil war that erupted in China during the mid nineteenth century. The events of this battle, but especially its memorialization in local temples in the years following the rebellion, established a local identity of resistance to Christianity and western imperialism. By the 1890’s this culture of resistance contributed to a series of riots that erupted in south China, related to the distribution of anti-Christian tracts and placards from publishing houses in Changsha. During these years a local gentry named Ye Dehui (1864-1927) emerged as a prominent businessman, grain merchant, and community leader.

  • Erlitou and Xia: a Dispute Between Chinese and Overseas Scholars
Erlitou and Xia: A Dispute between Chinese and Overseas Scholars Chen Chun Fudan University Gong Xin Shanghai Museum ABSTRACT Based on a review of the excavation and research at the Erlitou site at Yanshi in Henan and the Xia Culture, this article explores the causes of dispute be- tween Chinese and overseas scholars concerning the study of early Chinese states, in terms of epistemology, archaeological paradigms, utilization of historical records, reasoning method and normative versus ideographic approaches. The argument of this article is that this dispute occurs not only from the differences in academic traditions, but also the methodological backwardness caused by a lack of international exchange. 1. INTRODUCTION The concept of the Xia Dynasty has played a crucial role in the explora- tion of the origin of incipient states in China. Since hard evidence for the existence of the Shang Dynasty was found at Yinxu, the substantiation of the Xia Dynasty is naturally the next item on the agenda. As early as the middle of the twentieth century, historian Fan Wenlan purported Xia to be the first dynasty in Chinese history on the basis of historical docu- ments such as Shang Shu and the Records of Historian (Shi Ji) (Fan 1994: 31). Following textural research into ‘the residential area of the Xia eth- nic group or the Xia tribe’, archaeologist Xu Xusheng suggested that the Luoyang plain in the central Henan Province and the lower reaches of the Fen River in the southwestern Shanxi Province might have been two potential areas where the Xia Dynasty might have existed and so went to Henan to conduct field surveys (Xu 1959: 593–596).
