Representations of Italy and Italians in British Fiction and Travel Writing, 1900-1930 Representations of Italy and Italians in British Fiction and Travel Writing, 1900-1930 SaRyLouise Coffins Goldsmiths College, Univefsity of London PhD 2006 Declaration: I confirm that the work presentedin this thesisis my own SaUyLouise Coffins June 2006 Abstract Ibis thesis is conceived as a critical exploration of the construction of Italy and Italians in texts by British writers published between 1900 and 1930.Despite this period representing the heyday of writers in and writing on Italy, scholarship on the specifically Italian-centred rhetoric and its significanceis sketchy (though advancing):one must look piecemealto literature on travel-writing, literary modernism, Englishncssand regionalism, or on imperialist-colonialist discourse or on the Mediterraneanin literature; and to pre- 1900 periods such as Grand Tourism, Romanticism, the rise of mass tourism in the Victorian age; or the inter-war period. Drawing from this network of scholarship in detailed analyses of a dozen writers' works, a picture is built up of the principal characteristicsof literary constructions of Italy and Italians in terms of tropes, rhetorical strategiesand themes, accounting for their predominance,while maintaining a senseof variety and changewithin the parametersof genre and period. The selection of writers is based on their high standing in contemporary literary circles, their personal contact with Italy and the popularity of their texts during the period. Each chapter examineswriting on a particular region of Italy - Capri, Tuscany,the North and the South - drawing out the specific connotations of place found in and constructed by the texts. By scrutffuzing the workings of fiction and travel writing on Italy in the light of the discourses and contexts outlined above, the thesis will show that literary representations of Italy provide a window onto the way British writers conceived of British identity as well as of Italy and its people, during the first three decadesof the century. 3 Contents Acknowledgements 5 .......................................................... Ile potentially huge scopeof this undertaking necessarilyinvolves questions of structure and selection which this introduction will expound. Since many of the texts are currently out of print, it has been necessaryto quote passagesat some length; it is through close readingsthat rhetorical strategiesand tropes are identified, enabling an investigation of how settings, narrative, figurative language, ' style and genre re-present to the British reading public Italy and Italian people. Analysis of the place of the texts within their literary and historical contexts provides a meansof realigning and revitalizing them within the current terrain of evolving academicinterest in literature that crosscutsgeographical and generic boundaries.This approachis intended as a means by which the main findings can be re-discoveredby other readersof other texts on or set in Italy of the era. What the texts reveal about the historically-situatedplace of the Anglo-Italian encounter in the English imagination also sheds light on broader ideological issuessuch as British identity (Englishnessand nationhood), subjectivity and the place of literature in constructing these.While current academicpraxis tends to focus attention on the intertextual and provisional nature of languageitself, the fact ýýarticularly with regard to travel writing) that real writers were travelling to real placesat a particular moment should not be neglected.Indeed, the intersections of auto/biography, essayand traveloguewith romance and realist fiction found in the study of literary representationof Italy and Italians invites a rehabilitation of the writer in the ongoing debatesaround the location of meaning. I PrattaffwmsEurope's 'obsessive need to presentand re-presentits peripheriesand its otherscontinually to itself (IiVedalEyes.Traml Viifing andTranscu&urafion (1,ondon: Routledge, 1992), 5). 6 Ibis introductorychapter sets out the variouscontexts relevant to the production and receptionof the texts and an overviewof the discourseswithin which the texts are working and with which they areanalysed; it discussesthe problematicof a fiction/travel writing distinctionwhich arisesin the project and presentsregionalism as a rationalefor the thesis'sstructure. It defendsthe choiceof textsand writers and provides a chapter-by- chapteroverview of the thesis. Sociopolitical Contexts in England and Italy While this is not the place to chronicle at length the eventsand changesin English and Italian societybetween 1900 and 1930,it is worthwhile highlighting those most salient to the discussionsof the ensuingchapters. Beginning with the contentious Boer War, the period seesthe death of Queen Victoria, Empress of India (1901) during whose reign Britain's expansionistpolicies had reachedtheir zenith. It is a period marked by rapid, wide-reachingchange, in the world of politics (both international and domestic),in communications technology,in massculture, in class relations, in international relations and in urban growth.     Drinkers order Whisky Galore island’s entire stocks … five years too early 4th may 2009 shân ross Not a brick has been laid to build the first distillery on the island where Whisky Galore! was filmed—but connoisseurs have already signed up to reserve the entire batch of its first-year casks. Peter Brown will begin building the distillery on Barra in the autumn. The distillery, costing more than £1 million, will make about 5,000 gallons of Isle of Barra Single Malt Whisky a year using water from Loch Uisge, the island’s highest loch. It will use barley grown by crofters on the island before being milled and malted locally and be bottled at the distillery in Borve. Whisky needs to be matured for three years before it can legally be called whisky so the distillery will not have its first consignment until 2014. In the meantime Mr Brown has taken orders for the £1,000 oak casks from individuals and groups of friends from countries including Germany, Japan and Sweden, and the rest of the u.k. More than half the casks will be retained by the distillery but he is already selling his public quota of second-year reserve. Mr Brown said it was impossible to tell at this stage what the whisky would taste like but that it was ‘unlikely to be excessively peaty’. He said it would sell at about £30 a bottle at current prices at the premium end of market. Mr Brown, who ran a courier company in Edinburgh before moving to Barra 12 years ago, said: ‘The whisky will be of the island, from the island.

Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways.

    TRA FASCISMO E ANTIFASCISMO NEL SALERNITANO di Ubaldo Baldi Dopo la “grande paura” della borghesia italiana del biennio rosso e la “grande speranza” per il proletariato della occupazione delle fabbriche del settembre 1920 , gli anni che vanno dal 1920 al 1923 , sono caratterizzati in Italia dalle aggressioni squadristiche fasciste. Queste hanno l’obiettivo di smantellare militarmente le sedi dei partiti e delle organizzazioni sindacali della sinistra e con una strategia del terrore eliminare fisicamente e moralmente le opposizioni. Una essenziale , ma non meno drammatica, esposizione di cifre e fatti di questo clima terroristico si ricava da quanto scritto in forma di denunzia da A. Gramsci nell’ “Ordine Nuovo” del 23.7.21 . Nel salernitano il fascismo si afferma, sia politicamente che militarmente, relativamente più tardi, sicuramente dopo la marcia su Roma. Questo fu solo in parte dovuto alla forza e al consistente radicamento all’interno del proletariato operaio delle sue rappresentanze sindacali e politiche. Di contro gli agrari e il padronato industriale ma anche la piccola borghesia , in linea con il classico trasformismo meridionale, prima di schierarsi apertamente , attesero il consolidamento del fascismo e il delinearsi preciso della sua natura per poi adeguarsi conformisticamente alla realtà politico-istituzionale che andava rappresentandosi come vincente. Jews, who have changed much in the course of history, are certainly no race, [but] the anti‐Semites in a way are a race, because they always use the same slogans, display the same attitudes, indeed almost look alike. —Max Horkheimer1 John Berryman’s “The Imaginary Jew,” published in the Kenyon Review of 1945, is in some ways a rather programmatic account of one man’s conversion from parlor anti‐ Semitism to a feeling of solidarity with Jews. The climax occurs when a bigot accuses the narrator of being Jewish in order to discredit him in an argument over Roosevelt’s foreign policy prior to the American entry into World War II. The accusation completely unnerves the narrator in ways he does not immediately understand, and he is shocked to see that it discredits him in the eyes of the crowd, which has assembled at Union Square to hear impromptu debates. Later, after leaving the scene of his embarrassment, he decides to lay claim to this mistaken, or imaginary, identity, and comes to the following conclusion about the nature of prejudice: “My persecutors were right: I was a Jew. The imaginary Jew I was was as real as the imaginary Jew hunted down, on other nights and days, in a real Jew. Every murderer strikes the mirror, the lash of the torturer falls on the mirror and cuts the real image, and the real and the imaginary blood flow down together.”2 The story garnered some attention when it appeared in 1945.

Marine geological mapping of the Campania Region at the 1:10.000 scale is herein presented, focussing, in particular, on the geological map n. 465 “Isola di Procida” (Ispra, 2011). The geological map n. 465 “Isola di Procida” covers the Naples Bay from the Sorrento Peninsula up to the Procida island. In this geological map a total amount of 622 km2 of surface about 10 km2 are represented by emerged areas and 612 km2 by marine areas. The bathymetric belt 0/200 extends for 378 km2 and represents about the 60.8% of the total surface of the map. Sidescan sonar data have been calibrated by numerous sea bottom samples. The geological structures overlying the outcrop of acoustic basement, both carbonate (in correspondence to the Sorrento Peninsula) and volcanic (in correspondence to the Phlegrean Fields) have been investigated using Subbottom Chirp, Sparker and Watergun profiles. The interpretation of seismic data lends support for the reconstruction of the stratigraphic and structural setting of Quaternary continental shelf and slope successions and correlation to outcrops of acoustic basement, Mesozoic carbonate in the Sorrento Peninsula structural high and Quaternary volcanic in the Phlegrean Fields and Procida island. These areas result from the seaward prolongation of the stratigraphic and structural units widely cropping out in the surrounding emerged sector of the Sorrento Peninsula (Cinque et al., 1997), Naples town, Phlegrean Fields and Procida island (Scarpati et al., 1993; Perrotta et al., 2010; Ispra, 2011).

Throughout the fourteen years of its existence, encompassing the Irlande Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the magazine covers a neglected period of transition in the evolution of modernism. Through his editorial n° 4 policy and a susceptible interpretation of the Zeitgeist, Lehmann voices the particular torments of his generation, too young to have participated in - 2011 the First World War, but deeply affected by it.

Norman Douglas (1868— 1952) Von Rudolf Kuhk In seinem vortrefflichen Werk Die Ornithologen Mitteleuropas hat Ludwig Gebhardt die Vogelkundler aller Grade behandelt, soweit sie in Mitteleuropa beheimatet oder, von anderswoher gekommen, hier ansässig geworden waren. Nicht berücksichtigt sind also diejenigen, die nur als Gäste mit mehr oder weniger langem Aufenthalt im Ge­ biet sich ornithologisch produktiv betätigt haben. Zu dieser nicht gro­ ßen Gruppe rechnete man auch Norman Douglas, der schottischer Ab­ kunft war und einigen Angaben zufolge in Schottland geboren sein soll; als Gymnasiast hielt er sich 6 Jahre lang in Deutschland auf, und 1894 veröffentlichte er in einer englischen zoologischen Zeitschrift einen Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Vogelwelt Badens. Als ich mich mit seinem Lebenslauf befaßte, stellte sich bald heraus, daß er nicht in Schottland, sondern in Österreich geboren ist, also doch zu dem von Gebhardt bearbeiteten Personenkreis gehört. Indes kam diese Er­ kenntnis für die Aufnahme in das Werk zu spät. Lediglich eine Kurz­ notiz mit den beiden Haupt-Lebensdaten konnte in den letzten „Er­ gänzungen während des Druckes“ (Band 3) noch eingefügt werden. Da den Ornithologen Deutschlands von und über Douglas höchstens seine erwähnte Arbeit und nunmehr jene Haupt-Daten bekannt sind, soll hier das Dunkel gelichtet werden, das für uns Vogelkundler über dem Leben und dem — unerwartet reichen — Werk dieses Mannes lag. Freilich sollte ich bei der Beschäftigung mit ihm bald erfahren, daß diese Unkenntnis keineswegs von denen geteilt wird, die im bri­ tischen schöngeistigen Schrifttum oder in der englischen Literatur über Süditalien Bescheid wissen.
