This ‘promising begin - ning’ led to a distinguished career as a composer, during which Järnefelt pro - duced numerous orchestral works, music for the stage, solo and choral songs and more than ten cantatas. Nonetheless he is remembered primar ily as a con - ductor, in which capacity he was highly regarded and directed the Royal Opera in Stockholm for many years. Of course he was not the only composer whose production has been overshadowed by a performing career, but in his case the shadow is espe cially long and deep.

Program Notes f(x) = sin²x–1/x Gabriella Smith (b. 1991) Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, Gabriella Smith found herself drawn both to music and to the natural wonders of the Pacific Coast. If the propensity of Smith’s music toward propulsive, repetitive rhythmic patterns and “additive” motivic cells places her in the minimalist tradition of Steve Reich and John Adams, her fascination with nature brings to mind the works of John Cage, Alan Hovhaness, Olivier Messiaen, and even John Luther Adams. At the same time, she has not shied from playful allusions to postmodern “recompositions.” Smith is passionate about hiking, birding, and backpacking, and she has even taken to recording underwater soundscapes. Her music defies easy categorization, which is partly why it continues to draw interest from an ever-widening circle.

    National Conference Performing Choirs 20152015 ACDA FestivalFestival ChoirChoir UniversityUniversity ofof Utah A Cappella Choir Thursday 8:00 pm - 9:45 pm Abravanel Hall (Blue Track) Friday 8:00 pm - 9:45 pm Abravanel Hall (Gold Track) The 2015 ACDA Festival Choir includes the Utah Sym- phony Chorus, Utah Chamber Artists, the University of Utah Chamber Choir, and the University of Utah A Cappella Choir conducted by Barlow Bradford. The Utah Symphony is con- ducted by Thierry Fischer. Founded in 1962, the A Cappella Choir offers singers the opportunity to perform works for larger choirs and to fi ne- tune the art of choral singing through exposure to music from Utah Chamber Artists the Renaissance through the twenty-fi rst century. Choir mem- bers hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading, and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, includ- ing pitch, and how to blend individual voices together into a unifi ed, beautiful sound. In recent years, the A Cappella Choir has become a standard of excellence in student singing in the State of Utah. Last fall, they sang Mozart’s Trinity Mass with the Utah Symphony and the Utah Symphony Chorus under the direction of Thierry Fischer. This renewed a tradition of collaboration between the choirs of the University of Utah and the Utah Symphony, and their outstanding performance resulted in invitations for return engagements in 2015. Utah Chamber Artists was established in 1991 by Barlow University of Utah Chamber Choir Bradford and James Lee Sorenson. The ensemble comprises forty singers and forty players who create a balance and so- nority rarely found in a combined choir and orchestra.

It operates as a network of active ensembles, orchestras and young professionals, supporting the creative dialogue between composers and performers and offering young professionals the opportunity to develop their skills with ensembles experienced in performing contemporary music on an international level. The ECCO concerts, and other cultural projects organised by ECSA, are aimed at increasing the visibility of ECSA and all the issues connected to the status of contemporary music creators. Pieces are received via a call to all ECSA member societies and are carefully selected to reflect the cultural and aesthetical diversity of European art music in the 21st century. In 2016, ECCO presented three very successful concerts given by Sturm und Klang, the Slovenian Philharmonic and the Big Band of RTV Slovenia. Tonight’s concert, the ECCO Symphony Wind Orchestra concert conducted by Thomas Van Haeperen, will perform five pieces by European composers selected by the ECCO Artistic Committee. The composers are: Jukka-Pekka Lehto (Finland), Grégory D’Hoop (Belgium), Denis Bosse (Belgium), Geir Sundbø (Norway) and Kari Beate Tandberg (Norway).     KALEVI AHO ORCHESTRAL WORKS KALEVI AHO – a composer of contrasts and surprises alevi Aho (born in Finland in 1949) possesses one of today’s most exciting creative voices. A composer with one foot in the past and one in the pres- K ent, he combines influences from the most disparate sources and transforms them through his creative and emotional filter into something quite unique. He does not believe in complexity simply for the sake of it. His music always communicates directly with the listener, being simultaneously ‘easy’ yet ‘difficult’, but never banal, over-intellectual, introvert or aloof. In his own words, “A composer should write all sorts of works, so that something will always evoke an echo in people in different life situations. Music should come to the help of people in distress or give them an ex- perience of beauty.” Kalevi Aho is equally natural and unaffected in his symphonies and operas as he is in his intimate musical miniatures. Monumental landscapes painted in broad brush- strokes go hand in hand with delicate watercolours, serious artistic confessions and humour. The spectrum of human emotions is always wide, and he never lets his lis- teners off lightly. He poses questions and sows the seeds of thoughts and impulses that continue to germinate long after the last note has died away. “His slightly unassuming yet always kind appearance is vaguely reminiscent of Shosta- kovich, while his musical voice, with its pluralistic conception of the world and its intricate balance between the deliberately banal and the subtle, is undoubtedly closer to late Mahler.” It is easy to agree with this anonymous opinion of Kalevi Aho.

Ahmas started piano lessons when he was ten, but seven years later changed to the bassoon. For most of the 1980s he was a member of the Finnish Radio Sym phony Orchestra, until he was appointed principal bassoonist of the Lahti Sym phony Orchestra in 1989. In addition to his orchestral work, Ahmas is an active chamber musician. As a com- poser his catalogue of works contains pieces in many different genres: over the years he has written not only three symphonies but also a number of concertos with orchestral accompaniment, orchestral works, works for wind band, a large amount of chamber music, two chamber operas, the score to the music play Itämaan tähti (Star of the East), the six-movement mass Kumartakaa valkeaa (Bow towards the Light) and various arrangements for orchestra, for example of hymns and folk songs. Many of Ahmas’s works have been written in response to commissions but, accord ing to the composer, the First Symphony was composed as the result of a need to write something just for himself, for a change. Ahmas has stated that in general his music does not have an ideological basis: ‘Most important of all are the emotional reactions that the listener has to the music.
