“Sorry, Sir, but I have to postpone our meeting for tomorrow morning,” said SMSgt. Roel Slot of the Training Wing Mission Crew Radar Technician Section, when I wanted to see him to get information for this article, particularly about his duties before he joined the E-3A Component in 2003. “Due to sickness my colleague dropped out and I’ve got to fly the mission”. That’s typical SMSgt. Slot: no excuses when someone calls on him.
SMSgt. Slot joined the Royal Netherlands Air Force in 1979, after serving in the Special Forces as a conscript. He is still proud of the Green Beret he earned there. Since 1979 he has served as a radar technician at various units, except from 1991 until 1996 when he had his first tour at the E-3A Component as an (instructor) computer display technician, and seven years as a communications technician at (now) JFC HQ Brunssum.
