It allows for the replacement of mitochondrial DNA affected by mutations in a human egg (ovum) or zygote by transferring the nuclear DNA into a healthy donated egg that is not affected. The aim of this is to stop the transmission of mitochondrial disease that is inherited from the maternal line. In 2015, the British Parliament legalised the clinical use of mitochondrial donation. Significantly, these techniques allow for interventions that may be inherited by all subsequent generations of offspring of the person that the modified embryo may grow to be.
