Sports Snapshot
Sports Fundraising Market Snapsh t 2018 Mass participation sports events provide an excellent opportunity for charities to recruit, engage and inspire people to fundraise for them. Whilst not all charities have their own mass participation events, the majority utilise third party events delivered by ‘commercial’ providers for fundraising activity. The Sports Fundraising Snapshot is our annual review of this market. Which are the biggest events for sports fundraising? Working with our charity partners and ‘justcharity.org’ we have updated our estimate of the UK’s 25 most important mass participation sporting events for fundraising. Collectively we estimate this group of events enabled charities to raise more than £135M last year. Title of meeting: Cabinet Member for Culture and City Development Date of meeting: 20 March 2020 Subject: Great South Run Contract Report by: Director of Culture, Leisure and Regulatory Services Wards affected: All Key decision: No Full Council decision: No 1. Purpose of report 1.1 To outline to the Cabinet Member the proposal for new contract between the Council and Nova International following the completion of the current contract to deliver the Great South Run after the 2020 event. 2. Recommendations 2.1 That officers are authorised to enter into negotiations with Nova International to continue to hold the Great South Run in Portsmouth with a new contract in order to retain this iconic event in the city. 3. Background 3.1 The Great South Run started life in Southampton in 1990 as the Diet Coke Great South run (as it was known) attracting 2,500 entries before moving to Portsmouth 12 months later where it will have been held for the past 30 years after the delivery of the 2020 event. The fast flat route has now become an international gold standard where, with the support of prevailing winds in the right direction it has given thousands of people the opportunity to achieve a personal best time as well as fundamentally encouraging participation in mass physical activity. 3.2 This 10 mile event attracts a wide range of participates from the international athletics elite to the charity fundraisers with this mid distance event supporting runners as they progress from the 10km routes up to the half marathon. As a renowned European IAAF Gold Label Road Race the event attracts some of the most successful professional runners with world class athletes such as Sonia O'Sullivan, Paula Radcliffe and Mo Farah to name but a few. -

Read 334 Inspiring Stories
Inspiring stories from AudioFuel customers Since I've been an audiofuel customer, running has helped me deal with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Even when I feel low, tired and like I don't want to carry on, listening to audiofuel tracks helps to give me the motivation I need to get out and run. When I run, it helps improve my mood and this in turn helps me to live life to its fullest. ______________________ I lost 3 stone after running to audio fuel pyramid 200 and went on to complete a half marathon having only trained for 10 weeks ! My proudest moment was when I planned to go out for a 3 mile run, got lost and managed to run 5 miles! My first distance larger than 3 miles, and I kept at the same pace. I was so proud of myself! ______________________ Inspiration from Team AudioFuel Page 1 of 79 I'm 62 and have been exercising routinely for decades. However I amped it up with the interval training and not only did I peel off a few pounds, but my energy is great! I love intervals and so does my dog. (I also out ran my 37 year old son, and it inspired him to amp it up too!) ______________________ Having come back from 8 months of injury and operations, all my running has been done to audiofuel, without it I don't think I would be back running 4 times per week. The speed session is slower but I can see improvement, the long runs painfully slow. -
Archive Race Reports 2008
Archive Race Reports 2008 6th January ~ Ropsley Raid nr Grantham, Lincolnshire, Multi-Terrain. Host Club ~ Ropsley Road Runners. This popular local race is a multi-terrain affair, run over fields, track and roads in and around the small village near Grantham. A slight frost was present as daylight broke, however clear blue skies and a brisk chilling wind added to the New Year feel. Both races were underway at the same 10 o'clock start time, with a good field of runners that would contest the narrow tracks early on before the race settled down. Prior to the race, Race Officials informed competitors that the race distance for the 6 mile race, was now approximately 8 miles, however satellite navigation watches would measure to course at 8.9 miles! Undaunted by the new distance Club members set off facing the challenge. New to our Club Tracie Hough entered the race with little recent off road experience, however produced a strong run finishing in 1hr 25mins, Candy Louth was pleased to finish in 1.32. Next to finish Catherine Simpson 1.38, Pat Riches approximately 15 mins adrift of Catherine in 1.52 with Stephen Betts 1.54. Julie Stapleton accompanied Carolyn Crocker who had not run above 6 miles before today and was delighted to finish this extended race in together in 2.04. In the 13 mile race measured at 13.6 miles Dave Tilley in a purple patch of form stormed home in first place some 5 minutes in front of the 2nd place runner, winning this event for the first time. -

YES, YOU! You may be asking why a random person you’ve never heard of is telling you such a thing. I’m a less than perfectly fit and able person who, in January this year stood in awe on the start line of the Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh Winter Run, watching three thousand people of every imaginable shape, size, age and physical ability doing something I think is amazing – getting active by running with friends, family and colleagues, sharing together in moving and being healthier. I’m also lucky enough to lead Simplyhealth and we’re the partner of the Great Run Company, the organisers of the Great North 10k. We’re doing this with one simple aim: to get millions moving. We at Simplyhealth are people with a passion and a purpose that’s all about helping people to make the most of life through better everyday health. You might be one of our three and a half million customers who we help every day in lots of ways but, even if you’re not, I hope that through our support of the Great North 10k we can help you in a small way to make the most of life. My dad, who was a GP all of his working life, told me that if you want to be healthy you should smile a lot, sleep enough and get out of breath at least three times a week doing something you love. -

Brendan went on to compete in three Olympic Games and became European and Commonwealth Champion at 5,000 and 10,000m plus a World Record Holder. During his time as an athlete competing at the top level of the sport he ran in the Round the Bays event in Auckland, New Zealand, and decided to bring the concept back to his native North East. The first Great North Run, the original Great Run, was staged in 1981. Since its first staging when 10,000 runners took part, it has grown into the world’s greatest half marathon and the UK’s biggest running event with 57,000 runners annually. In 2014 the Great North Run became the first event in the world to be officially recognised by the IAAF for achieving the milestone one millionth finisher. -
