SIMPLYHEALTH GREAT NORTH 5K & SIMPLYHEALTH JUNIOR & MINI GREAT NORTH RUN

About the events The Simplyhealth Great North 5k will get this massive weekend of sport for the North East off to a running start, when more than 1,000 participants are set to pound the pavements of the Newcastle Quayside. This event attracts all levels of runner, from gentle joggers to those looking to smash their personal best.

This year the event has teamed up with the NHS Trust, offering a ‘blue wave’ of around 200 NHS staff to run the 5k route. This is the culmination of a campaign between The Trust and The Company designed to support the physical and mental well-being of Trust employees.

This will be followed by the UK’s biggest children’s running event – the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great North Run, giving young runners of all abilities the chance to be involved in an amazing weekend of sport. Over 8,500 children and their families will be their greatest and take to the NewcastleGateshead Quayside across the day.

New for 2019, the Junior and Mini Great North 50 The Great North Run has been working with local physios and the Great North Children’s hospital to give even more children the chance to be involved, by the inclusion of a 50 metre event distance. All children taking part were invited to walk, push, run or anything in between, along the Newcastle Quayside, where they’ll finish under the gantry.

Media Facilities: Your media pass will gain you access to the start and finish areas, located on the Newcastle Quayside, between the Tyne and Millennium Bridges. Interviews will be available.

The Simplyhealth Great North Run weekend gives ordinary people the chance to be their greatest doing extraordinary things and celebrates the power of sport to change lives.

Here are some of the inspirational young runners taking part in this years’ Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great North Run.

Katie - 16 year old Katie’s dad sadly took his own life when his mental health got the better of him. Katie was very close to her dad, but had no idea what he was going through.

Running was a big part of their lives and they would run together for fun. This year Katie is doing the run for her dad and to reduce the male suicide rate.

Charli - Newcastle Charli Hopper was diagnosed with three large holes in her heart at just three weeks old and underwent 7 hours of life saving open- heart surgery at just 12 weeks old at the Freeman Hospital

Now a thriving 11 year old Charli does lots of charity work. This year she decided to enter the Simplyhealth Junior Great North Run to raise money for the heart until that saved her life as a baby.

Charli’s dad David had always wanted to get a tattoo of her scar so that Charli didn’t feel alone. When he surprised Charli with the tattoo this year, she was ecstatic. SIMPLYHEALTH JUNIOR & MINI GREAT NORTH RUN HUMAN INTEREST STORIES

Caitlyn 16 year old Caitlyn has run in every Simplyhealth Junior & Mini Great North Run since 3 years old with the support of her Olympian cousin Aly Dixon. This year she will be taking on the junior event for the last time, with her cousin cheering her on.

Consett rugby club u8’s The team mates, including Aiden and his sister Lucie are running the Simplyhealth Junior & Mini Great North Run to raise funds for Wards 4/14 the Children’s Oncology wards at the RVI Newcastle.

The rugby core values are Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS) something Aiden and his team mates demonstrate on a weekly basis not only at the rugby club but in daily life, what they are doing here is not only amazing but demonstrates these core values through and through.

Hebburn Town Juniors Football Club In June the Great North Run were announced as a founding partner of Made By Sport, a national initiative which was launched by HRH Duke of Sussex, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams. This four year campaign has been created to support the vital work of community sports organisations across the UK. It aims to champion the power sport has to change lives and raise £40m in additional funds for organisations that are using sport to transform the lives of young people in the UK over the next four years. This year we’re highlighting the work of some amazing community sports organisations and the extraordinary people that give up their time and energy to sustain them in order to motivate runners to support the campaign in 2020 and help Made By Sport use sport to change the lives of young people in the North East

Hebburn Town Juniors FC is community football club that over 16 years has grown from a handful of kids and a couple of coaches training in the local park, to 56 teams that are home to over 600 players, it’s now an organisation that many in the local area consider to be the heartbeat of the town. The club runs on volunteer parent power and fundraising, with many parents taking on the role of coaching and managing teams and many more fundraising through events like the Simplyhealth Great North Run, a 20 strong team from the club will be taking on the Junior Great North Run to raise funds for their club and the charity Hebburn Helps. CHAMPION sprinter Allyson Felix has been announced to compete in Saturday’s Great North CityGames in Stockton-on-Tees.

The 33-year-old Californian will take on the 150m event on the pop-up track on Stockton High Street on Saturday - and will start as a clear favourite having earned the accolade as the joint most decorated female in Olympic history.

Felix has six Olympic gold medals to her name with three silver medals earned over a 15-year senior career. She scooped 11 World Championship gold medals with three silvers and two bronze medals.

And, Felix is no stranger to the Great CityGames street athletics meetings, having last competed in the Manchester event a year ago and wowing the crowds previously in 2013 and 2011.

Felix has held the record for fastest 150m in Manchester ever since she clocked 16.36 in 2013 – a then world best time. The 17-time world and Olympic champion was a clear winner on Deansgate and joined the illustrious band of sprinters to have recorded a super-speedy time on the pop-up track which makes its debut in Tees Valley at the weekend.

Felix also set the 200m CityGames record in Manchester back in 2011, recording a then-world leading time for a no-bend 200m race.

This will be her first race in Stockton-on-Tees, however, taking on the 150m distance which she has excelled in the street athletics meetings over the last decade. She lines up alongside British 200m champion Beth Dobbin and compatriot Ashley Henderson.

It is all change for the Great North CityGames for 2019, with the event having spent a decade on NewcastleGateshead Quayside before moving to Tees Valley.

Felix will be the main feature of the day, joining Paralympic stars Jonnie Peacock, Sophie Hahn and Marlou van Rhijn in the free-to-spectate event. GREAT NORTH CITYGAMES PRESS RELEASE

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who anchored Great Britain to a famous World Championships gold medal in the 4x100m relay final in London two years ago, will feature in the 150m men’s race alongside Commonwealth gold medallist Harry Aikines Aryeetey.

Veteran champion LaShawn Merritt will take on the 400m taking full advantage of Stockton’s vast high-street in a Great CityGames first. The USA Olympic and World Championships gold medallist will take on a strong field featuring British trio Guy Learmonth, Martyn Rooney and Dwayne Cowan.

Great CityGames events have long been a celebration of both domestic and international athletics talent, and there is plenty of local talent on display this weekend too.

Sprinter Richard Kilty will compete over 100m and 150m, with the Teesside Tornado competing in front of his hometown crowd. Making her CityGames debut will be Dovile Kilty, joining her husband. More often seen as a triple jumper, Dovile will be competing in the women’s long jump alongside USA Olympic and World champion long jumper Tianna Bartoletta. Also involved is Middlesbrough pole vaulter Charlie Myers, who will aim to make up for missing out on a place in the Great Britain World Championships squad by competing in front of an appreciative home crowd on Saturday.

With a range of events on offer from 100m sprints to the one-mile distance, and including pole-vault and long jump in a specially constructed multi sports arena on Stockton-on-Tees High Street, the Great North CityGames kicks off a weekend of first-class sporting action which includes the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great North Run, the Simplyhealth Great North 5k, the Simplyhealth Great Tees 10K and finishes with the world-famous Simplyhealth Great North Run on Sunday.

The event is being supported by Tees Valley Combined Authority and Stockton Borough Council.

The athletics action starts at 11am and is completely free to spectate with no ticket required. Issued by Great North CityGames Data Control VERSION 1c- 04.09.19 (Lane draw/ jump order not yet confirmed)

SIMPLYHEALTH GREAT NORTH RUN

About the event The Simplyhealth Great North Run is the UK’s biggest running event and the world’s biggest . This year 57,000 people will take on their own personal challenge as they run, jog and walk 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields.

The course takes in the iconic , goes through Gateshead, passing the famous international athletics stadium, and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields. Live music, on-course refreshments and thousands of cheering supporters will keep runners motivated every step of the way.

In 2020 the 40th Great North Run will take place, GNR40 will be our boldest event yet, with a host of exciting new activities and experiences for runners, spectators and visitors planned. Our partnership with Made By Sport will also play a big part of next year’s celebrations.

In June we were announced as a founding partner of this national campaign, which was launched by Prince Harry, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams.

The campaign has been created to support the vital work of grassroots sports clubs around the UK. It aims to champion the power of sport to change lives and raise funds for organisations that are using sport to transform the lives of young people in the UK over the next four years.

At the 2020 Great North Run we’re aiming to raise a significant sum of money as part of the £40 million overall fundraising target for the campaign. That money will stay in the region to support local grass roots sports organisations

Local sports clubs and teams have always been a huge part of the Great North Run story with many organisations facilitating their own fundraising through the event. Sport has been a crucial part of life for people growing up in the region for many generations, and through the determination and tireless efforts of local volunteers, coaches and parents we have produced a number of sporting superstar. Crucially, in an area disproportionately affected by economic decline, sport has been a lifeline for many individuals giving them a sense of purpose, pride and achievement.

This year we’re highlighting the work of some of these amazing organisations and the extraordinary people that give up their time and energy to sustain them in order to motivate runners to support Made By Sport in 2020.

The Simplyhealth Great North Run weekend gives ordinary people the chance to be their greatest doing extraordinary things and celebrates the power of sport to change lives.

Here are some of the inspirational runners and groups taking part in this years’ Simplyhealth Great North Run.

Sporting Chance North East Sporting Chance North East offer’s education, training and social opportunities to children, young people and adults that have found it difficult accessing mainstream education or services. Sporting Chance empowers children and people through sport and fitness to gain qualifications, achieve employment and improve social skills. Head of Operations Jordan and five friends are taking part in this year’s Simplyhealth Great North Run.

Wabi Sabi Taekwondo Academy Roz Gadd set up Wabi Sabi Taekwondo Academy in Coxhoe, County Durham as she recognised a need for something different in the local area. Since then the community have taken the academy to their hearts, with a large number of children, young people and adults passing through it’s doors. Roz’s no nonsense approach teaches that it’s just as important to “be a martial art” as “do a martial art” and emphasises the tenants of taekwondo which encourage courtesy, helpfulness and life long learning.

When Roz’s daughter Jade, herself an experienced Taekwondo practitioner and instructor, began suffering with the genetic condition Ehlers-Danlos syndrome the Wabi Sabi family stepped in to help. Callum McNally, who has been training with the academy since he was twelve years old is now running the Simplyhealth Great North Run with his dad Paul to raise funds for the family to modify their home to better accommodate Jade’s condition and raise the profile of the Academy that has had such a profound effect on his life.

Hebburn Town Juniors Football Club Hebburn Town Juniors FC is community football club that over 16 years has grown from a handful of kids and a couple of coaches training in the local park, to 56 teams that are home to over 600 players, it’s now an organisation that many in the local area consider to be the heartbeat of the town. The club runs on volunteer parent power and fundraising, with many parents taking on the role of coaching and managing teams and many more fundraising through events like the Simplyehalth Great North Run, with dad and coach Jimmy Molloy running this year as the club mascot Hebby the Hornet. The team also has a huge number of players taking part in the Junior Great North Run to raise funds for the club. SIMPLYHEALTH GREAT NORTH RUN HUMAN INTEREST STORIES

SPORTING SUPERSTARS JOIN A WORLD CLASS ELITE FIELD AND 57,000 INSPIRATIONAL RUNNERS AT THE SIMPLYHEALTH GREAT NORTH RUN

An epic weekend of sport is approaching for the North East as the region gears up for the 39th staging of the world famous Simplyhealth Great North Run on Sunday 8 September.

57,000 people are registered for the iconic 13.1 mile run which starts on the Central Motorway in Newcastle before making its way through Gateshead, finally finishing at the coast in South Shields.

SATURDAY All the action gets underway on Saturday 7 September, with the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great North Run and the Simplyhealth Great North 5k on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and the Great North CityGames, and the Simplyhealth Great Tees 10k and Junior Mini events in Stockton-on-Tees.

The Simplyhealth Junior Mini Great North Run, will see 8,500 budding runners aged from 3 to 16 take on the 1.5k Mini course or the longer 4K Junior run on the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. This year the 150,000th runner will cross the finish line of the event which was first staged in 1986.

1000 runners will be taking part in the 5k, including 200 staff from the Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Trust as part of a campaign designed to support the physical and mental well-being of their employees.

In the south of the region, the second year of the Simplyhealth Great Tees 10K and Junior Mini events will be accompanied by the first ever staging of the Great North CityGames in Stockton-on-Tees. The unmissable event, showcasing local, national and international talent will see the town’s famous High Street transformed into a pop up athletics arena which will include a purpose built Sprint Track, Long Jump and Pole vault.

Allyson Felix will lead a list of star names to compete in the Great North CityGames which moves to Stockton-on-Tees this year. The 33-year-old Californian will take on the 150m, starting as a clear favourite having earned the accolade as the joint most decorated female in Olympic history.

Felix will be joined by a host of stars including Paralympians Jonnie Peacock, Sophie Hahn and Marlou van Rhijn in the free-to-spectate event.

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who anchored Great Britain to a famous World Championships gold medal in the 4x100m relay final in London two years ago, will feature in the 150m men’s race alongside Commonwealth gold medallist Harry Aikines Aryeetey.

Sprinter Richard Kilty will compete over 100m and 150m, with the Teesside Tornado competing in front of his hometown crowd. SIMPLYHEALTH GREAT NORTH RUN PRESS RELEASE

SPORTING SUPERSTARS ON THE STARTERS PODIUM Cricketing hero Mark Wood, from our World Cup winning England side will join Lionesses Steph Houghton and Jill Scott, who reached the semi-finals at the Women’s Football World Cup in France, on the official starters podium at Sunday’s Simplyhealth Great North Run.

The trio of talent, all originally hailing from the North East will take on starters duties for the day, seeing tens of thousands of runners across the start line.

WORLD CLASS ELITES Ahead of the masses Sir Mo Farah will lead a world class elite field in a competitive race across the Half Marathon distance. Farah will look to become the first ever athlete to win six consecutive Great North Runs. The 10-time World and Olympic champion and British marathon record holder defends his title having finished first on every occasion since 2014.

Lining up alongside Sir Mo will be fellow Great Britain marathoner Callum Hawkins. The Scottish distance runner will be in marathon action at the World Championships in Doha later this year, hoping to improve on the fourth place he achieved in London in 2017.

Ethiopian Tamarit Tola will look to upset the British contingent’s hopes on Sunday. The 28-year-old has a half marathon PB of 59.37 in comparison to Farah’s best of 59.22 and the 10,000m 2016 Olympic bronze medallist will be one to watch on Tyneside.

In the women’s race, Mary Keitany will bid to win her fourth Great North Run since 2014 when she lines up on Sunday. The Kenyan took first place in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and will be favourite to repeat her victory.

Compatriot Brigid Kosgei, who finished second to last year, returns to Tyneside to compete. Kosgei’s recent form is impressive, having won the London Marathon in April and taking victory in last year’s Chicago Marathon.

Magdalene Masai last competed at Simplyhealth Great North Run in 2017 when she finished fourth. The Kenyan will be expected to push Keitany and Kosgei to complete a Kenyan 1-2-3.

British pair Charlotte Purdue and Steph Twell will count on the home support in the half marathon. The Aldershot, Farnham and District duo are in decent form at present, but will be challenged by Hayley Carruthers in what will be a fierce battle for domestic honours.

In the wheelchair races, David Weir and Martyna Snopek both seek to replicate their 2018 wins on Tyneside. Both members of Weir’s Weir Archer Academy, the pair eased to victory in their respective classes last year but both will find competition in the shape of Simon Lawson and Johnboy Smith in the men’s race, while perennial challenger Shelly Woods will take on Snopek in the women’s race.

Our partnership with Made By Sport will play a big part in next year’s celebrations. In June we were announced as a founding partner of this national campaign, which was launched by HRH Duke of Sussex, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams

It aims to champion the power sport has to change lives and raise £40m in additional funds for organisations that are using sport to transform the lives of young people in the UK over the next four years.

Made By Sport is aiming to raise a significant amount towards this total through its partnership with GNR40, that money will stay in the North East region to support local organisations.

This year the event is highlighting the work of some of these amazing organisations and the extraordinary people that give up their time and energy to sustain them, in order to motivate runners to support the campaign in 2020.

Jayne Fearn, Simplyhealth Great Run Lead said, “The Simplyhealth Great North Run weekend is perfect for families who want to enjoy happier, healthier lives through being active together, and Simplyhealth will be supporting you every step of the way.

“On Saturday come and join us at our ‘Rate my Gait’ dome – run for 20 seconds on our treadmill and you’ll leave with your own unique video and tips on how to improve your running form – we’ll be next to The Baltic Centre. On Sunday Rate My Gait will be next to the beer tent in the finishers village for everyone to enjoy. We’ll also be helping runners with their post run recovery at our Stretch Zone and Massage Zone.

“This year, we’re proud to have Diabetes UK as our official charity partner for the series. Our partnership enables us to continue our great work in supporting people with their health; encouraging as many people as possible to become more active to reduce the risks of developing conditions such as diabetes. Good luck to everyone taking part. We look forward to seeing you at the finish line to celebrate your amazing achievements.”

The Great Run Company As the UK’s original running events series, we know a thing or two about motivation. Over the last three decades we’ve realised it doesn’t matter why people run or how far they go - the one thing every runner has in common is that moment of triumph when they cross the line. We want everyone to experience that feeling, so we’ll do whatever we can to help our customers achieve their goal and be their greatest.

Starting with the very first Great North Run in 1981, our events have always been a celebration of what makes our locations great. The Great Run Series now sees 230,000 participants a year taking part. The events programme stretches across the UK from Glasgow to Portsmouth offering a full range of distances from 5k through to the half marathon. Great Run Local is a series of weekly events staged in our key cities. All designed to provide the support and advice for participants of all abilities to achieve their personal goal.
