Sports Snapshot Sports Fundraising Market Snapsh t 2018 Mass participation sports events provide an excellent opportunity for charities to recruit, engage and inspire people to fundraise for them. Whilst not all charities have their own mass participation events, the majority utilise third party events delivered by ‘commercial’ providers for fundraising activity. The Sports Fundraising Snapshot is our annual review of this market. Which are the biggest events for sports fundraising? Working with our charity partners and ‘justcharity.org’ we have updated our estimate of the UK’s 25 most important mass participation sporting events for fundraising. Collectively we estimate this group of events enabled charities to raise more than £135M last year. The market is growing Overall the amount raised from mass participation sports events increased last year for the fourth consecutive year. Growth is uneven Whilst as a group the 25 biggest events saw income raised from them grow by more than 10%. 10 events out of 25 saw the amount charities raised from them static or falling. Across the market as a whole, the charities we work with reported a slowing in the rate of growth in income raised from all sports events in their portfolio. Running still dominates In terms of activity, running still dominates the market accounting for 16 of the 25 (down from 18) but perhaps the most significant change is the rapid growth of ‘trek’ events doubling the number in the top 25 from 2 to 4 events which enabled charities to raise more than £7M last year. Average value up, volume down Overall, we have seen a small decline in the number of people fundraising from mass participation sports events, whilst the average amount raised by fundraisers increased by 8% last year. About us As an agency that specialises in mass participation and fundraising, we’re passionate about understanding how the market is changing and spotting emerging trends to support our clients and harness the potential of mass participation events. This report forms part of a wider research piece on the state of the UK sports fundraising market ‘The Sports Fundraising Monitor’. If you’d like to find out more about the report or how we can help you get more out of mass participation events get in touch [email protected] *Our definition of mass participation sports events includes only events based around physical activities and those which are open to any charity, so excludes all events owned or associated with a single or small groups of charities e.g. Race for Life or Moonwalk. Fundraising data is based on figures supplied by our data partner justcharity.org who provide data from the UK’s major fundraising platforms. We have considered only UK fundraising for named events based only on pages that received their first donation and last donation between January 1st 2016 & April 1st 2018. No considera- tion has been made for commercial donations, shared income, grants or similar payments made by events, their organisers or sponsors to charity partners. Whilst we have made every effort to ensure data is as accurate as possible we make no guarantee on any of the figures included in this report..

  • Blackheath & Bromley Courier
Blackheath & Bromley Courier November 2019. President 2019-20. Julian Golding. Editor. Pat Calnan ([email protected]) From 150 Years to Tipping Point? 23rd October 1869. Happy birthday to us! The Club History quotes “Bells Life In London” of Weds October 27th 1869 on the first run of Peckham Hare & Hounds, “The first meet of this Club took place on Saturday, the 23rd inst., at the King’s Arms, Peckham Rye…. The hares… were sent off at four o’clock, and led the “run” through Goose Green, Denmark Hill, Lordship Lane, Dulwich, Sydenham, Forest Hill, and back to the Rye, making a run from nine to ten miles. Time of running, 97 minutes”. Peckham Hare & Hounds became Peckham AC, who became Blackheath Harriers, who became Blackheath Harriers, Bromley, who became Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC on merging with Bromley AC, who had previously been Bromley Ladies AC, Wigmore Ladies AC and originally Wigmore Harriers. Throw in a number of HQ changes, the Boer War, First World War, Second World War etc etc… it’s been a long journey. Happily the Club birthday fell on a Wednesday Night and those attending our Clubhouse were treated to free beer. We saw some people we had not seen for some time such as Carolyna Haley (nee Jones Baldock) and Mark Colpus, one of the scoring 6 when we won the Senior Mens National Cross Country title for the first time in 1994. John Turner brought greetings from Bill Clapham, who had earlier in the day cycled part of the original course at the age of 89, and from David Johnson who is currently in hospital.

  • Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events -The Internationalization of Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon
Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events -the internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet Half marathon Jenny Cheng and Hanna Sundell Graduate School Master of Science in International Business and Trade Master Degree Project No. 2011:12 Supervisor: Harald Dolles Abstract Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events - The Internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet Half Marathon Jenny Cheng and Hanna Sundell Supervisor: Harald Dolles Sports events are becoming increasingly globally important in social and economic terms. The number of people traveling abroad aiming to participate in those events has strongly increased in recent years. However, in the world‘s largest half marathon - the ‗GöteborgsVarvet‘ - held annually in Gothenburg, Sweden, the rate of foreign participants is still relatively low. Although a wide range of studies have been conducted within sports and event management, the attention towards developing an internationalization strategy for such kind of events is relatively low. The aim of the thesis is to fill this gap, by analyzing the case of GöteborgsVarvet and developing possible foreign market entry modes. The modes discussed in the thesis rank from cooperative forms, e.g. joint venture and marketing alliances, to wholly owned modes, like sales outlets and qualification races. The survey is based on qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicate that, in addition to choosing a foreign market entry mode that fits the specific event, there needs to be a close fit between destination and event in order to be able to attract foreign runners. Furthermore, in order for the internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet to succeed, it requires for the organization of GöteborgsVarvet to truly find or develop motives for it.

The categories are further divided by age and sex. The Striders were once regular winners of the overall competition and there now seems an appetite to challenge once again for the top spot. There are usually around 18 races that make up the Grand Prix. Points are awarded according to your finishing position, 1st place earns 500 points, 2nd place 499, and so on. The scoring is separate for males and females. Your points total is obtained from your best 8 scoring races. These 8 races must include at least 2 races of 10 miles or more. Runners' individual points allocation also form the team scores for the club; the top 10 men and 10 ladies (vets top 5 men, top 5 ladies) are counted. Full details can be found on the SGP website http://sussexgrandprix.co.uk/ The clubs that tend to do the best are those with strength and depth across the sexes and age groups. So, don’t worry if you are not up there with the fastest in the club, if you compete in at least 8 races you are still likely to make a significant contribution to the team.
